Go on...give me your best hospital bag labour snacks/food must have’s! It’s the last thing on my list now! Grin

See everyone said to bring snacks and so I packed my bag full of them but throughout labour I felt far too nauseous to eat anything. The midwife did have to force me to drink some lucazade at one point though so a sugary drink might be a good thing to pack.

babyt2020 · 02/06/2020 22:18

I'm due on Sunday and have in my rucksack some soreen lunch box size minis, a few trek bars which are nice and filling, crisps and I also have some homemade delicious flapjacks in the freezer that I'll chuck in as we leave! I'm constantly thirsty and really want to have loads of cold drinks but don't know if I feel silly taking the cool box, what do you think?

Clemmie83 · 02/06/2020 22:21

I've heard Jelly Babies are good to keep energy up!

bez91 · 02/06/2020 22:24

@Clemmie83 I second Jelly Babies!

With lucozade they say to go with the isotonic drinks so the lucozade sport ones that aren't fizzy. I took about 4 with me but had a fast labour - I imagine they'd be good to keep your energy up though!

Boltsand · 02/06/2020 22:25

I took quite a bit in, anticipating a long stay (was relatively quick in the end), but all I consumed in actual labour was a non-fizzy energy drink and some werthers originals. They gave me both distraction and a little energy boost.

I was a vbac so it may have been why I wasn't allowed to eat (higher chance of needing emcs so they wanted me to have an empty stomach?) But they didn't let me crack into my other snacks (cereal bars etc) after a certain point. I wished I'd eaten earlier on in labour, as I was quite hungry by the time I gave birth.

Hopefully they'll let you eat when you feel like though! Good luck!

jerometheturnipking · 02/06/2020 22:26

Dextrose tablets and isotonic lucozade. I had no appetite but wanted to know I could keep my energy up.

Loubylou9162 · 02/06/2020 22:29

Lucozade sport to drink.
I nibbled on malted milk biscuits when I was hungry but mostly felt too sick

CoolNoMore · 02/06/2020 22:34

@babyt2020 do it, this is a great idea!

OP, my hospital specifically recommends jelly babies for some reason.

SpillTheTeaa · 02/06/2020 22:58

When I was in actual labour I couldn't eat. The midwives kept telling me to eat my breakfast I wanted to throw the cereal at DP. I just couldn't eat.
I brought a lucozade orange zero for labour and oh my gosh. I'm glad I did. It was so nice and refreshing after having water for 4 days Grin.
I also had crisps because I love crisps but not food related PACK LIP BALM. I had some with me but numpty over here didn't use it and after using gas and air my gosh where my lips dry and cracked!

gamerchick · 02/06/2020 22:59

I didn't want to eat.

Your birth partner might thought.

pinksquash13 · 02/06/2020 23:01

I agree that you dont feel like eating. Unfortunately I had a 3 day latent stage labour and if this happens you must must continue to eat and drink. I ended up poorly because I didnt. Between contractions make yourself have a bite of your meal and a swig of lucozade sport.

PuntoEBasta · 02/06/2020 23:16

Straws! Bendy straws so that you can take sips of your drink without changing whatever position you have found to be most comfortable. Freeze some juice cartons so that you have a cold drink available later in labour. The wards are baking hot.

IKEA888 · 02/06/2020 23:18

chances are you won't want to eat.

Ziamahi · 02/06/2020 23:50

My hospital recommended some non-fizzy energetic drinks, and that is all. Nausea hadn't let me eat anything anyway

MrsRose2018 · 03/06/2020 08:43

I’m being induced and due to the current covid sitch our hospital said once me and my partner are in we are IN and we can’t even leave the ward to go to a canteen so we’ve got shit loads:
-yoghurt covered raisins

  • yoghurt covered strawberry pieces
  • strawberry fruitellas (I don’t like jelly babies)
-Tuc crackers/biscuits -little bags of salted popcorn
  • Jaffa cakes
  • lucozade sport
  • innocent kids smoothies (kids =small cartons)
  • salted peanuts
  • homemade flapjacks
  • peanut butter sandwiches (my induction is at 3 so we are just gonna make them in the morning)
  • bananas
MrsRose2018 · 03/06/2020 08:43

Oh and some curly wurlys... cos why not 🤷‍♀️

geojojo · 03/06/2020 08:47

I still remember the nicest food I have ever eaten was the toast and jam and tea given to me post birth though!

NamechangeObvis · 03/06/2020 09:32

I’ve never wanted food during labour, the idea is revolting to me. Last time mw did her best to encourage me so I had sugary drinks and managed some spoons of custard (I was at home) which slipped down easily! So maybe some snack pots of custard? Or dextrose energy tablets as someone has already suggested?

Giganticshark · 03/06/2020 09:37

I took a cup of mint tea. Was fuckin brilliant

Mangomumma · 03/06/2020 10:05

I took a bag full of snacks & drinks & didn't touch them. Couldn't face anything but water!

Mangomumma · 03/06/2020 10:06

DH enjoyed the jelly babies, cereal bars & lucozade sport though Grin Kept him awake through the night!

Lovelostnfoundx · 03/06/2020 11:10

Orange juice, peanut butter sandwiches, peanuts, haribo, crisps, individual fruit in jelly pots, isotonic drinks, Cereal bars, pot noodles in case I’m in a while after birth!

turnthebiglightoff · 03/06/2020 11:12

4 day long labour; I had a yoghurt and 2 snack bars. Nausea and pain made it impossible to eat!

turnthebiglightoff · 03/06/2020 11:13

Also they forgot to feed me after the birth, so I had a microwaves hospital omelette 25 hours after birth Grin I was quite thin after that week or so! Baby weight just fell off!

Bleepers · 03/06/2020 14:42

I was puking so much I had to be put on a drip. So no snacks for me!!
