Why do we have to call it BFP and BFN it sounds so ...well infantile!

We are grown women. Mumsnetters need to rise above these things.

What's wrong with Positive Pregancy Test?

Surely DH is the worst acronym. I am told it means Dear Husband. Dear? What????! Who uses that term any more?

Also as an alternative to AF/period etc - some people use "having the painters in". Well last week I really DID have the painters in which is confusing as I am 30 weeks pregnant.

MamaMaiasaura · 22/09/2007 16:24

I thought it meant darling.

TwoThumbsDon · 22/09/2007 18:32

Love this thread! I think I might use OTR or The Curse! I love Loreena McKennitt singing "The Lady of Shallott" and I will never be able to listen to that part in the same light again!

I came across "AF" first on an American message board so I thought it was an American thing that's permeated the 'net. Took me ages to find out it wasn't some highly technical term!

NotAnOtter · 22/09/2007 20:41

OTR sounds good to me

Amen to expatinscotland
The phrase 'we are pregnant' brings me out in hives. I'm the one who's carrying the child and I'm the one who has to give birth to it.

I told my husband that if he ever used that term I'd throw a cushion at him.

chunkypudding · 24/09/2007 14:48

Hey, thought it was just me that got wound up by this stuff!! Can't stand DH/DP as I would never call my fella that. I mean, I love him to bits, but whether it's 'Darling Partner' or 'Dear Partner' it just sounds daft to me. I really don't mind the 3 seconds more typing it takes to write 'my fella' or 'my bloke' or even, if feeling quite grwon-up 'my partner' !

It's just the drling/dear bit that seems weird to me. Especially if he happens to be getting on my nerves, then it just feels soooo laden with sarcasm

chunkypudding · 24/09/2007 14:49

and as for 'we are pregnant'.... YUCK

chunkypudding · 24/09/2007 14:50

TC is my bloke's initial's though. And I wouldn't go as far as to call him a curse, even on a bad day! Would be glad to have an alternative to AF though, feels like we're all at boarding school in the 50's!

Egg · 24/09/2007 14:57

I tend to use AF on here as the majority of others do. Never never heard of Aunt Flo before though. I thought it was something to do with absent friend or something. Bizarre.

Humping is a good term for shagging, IMHO. Shagging is a great word itself. We also use Boffing on another thread (although my husband and I refer to passing wind as boffing...., so it can get a bit confusing).

Have been known in past to call period "Japanese Flag", which is a white flag with a red blob in the middle...

tigerschick · 24/09/2007 14:58

I stopped using AF and BD ages ago! Can't stand either so I say period and sex.
Don't really have a problem with BFP and BFN. Not bothered either way with them - PPT and NPT would work just as well but there would be a loooooooonnnnnngggggg confusing switch over period if we did decide to change.

Agree about "We're pregnant" YUCK YUCK YUCK!

MrsTittleMouse · 24/09/2007 16:49

DH isn't so bad, as I think of the "D" as meaning "family member" on the boards. HATE HATE HATE BDing though. So naff and twee! In a similar vein, also hate "trying" for a baby. When we were TTC and so was SIL we admitted to her that we secretly called it f*cking for a baby.

Lorayn · 31/10/2007 12:39

I like bumping uglies for sex, my mum always said it and it is a perfect description yet still quite humourous.

ScaremyVile · 31/10/2007 12:48

I agree.

A positive/+, a negative/-, sex, period.

Mny of the acronyms are necessary and an improvemnet on having to type the whole word/sentence.

BFP, BFN, BD and AF are ridiculous and I would never use them - far too cringey, the sort of shorthand you'd hear on Midsummer Murders.
