Anyone else not bothered with maternity clothes?

*Disclaimer - I’ve only ever worked from home or been a stay at home parent while pregnant, so I’ve never had to go anywhere or look smart.

Third pregnancy and while looking though some pregnancy forums today, I realised that I’ve never bought a piece of maternity wear. Mainly because I’ve never had the money to buy a new wardrobe for such a short space of time, it I’ve just never needed any.

Always just got by with my usual leggings, dressed and t shirts. I don’t tend to get a huge bump though. I am quite fat anyway, but at 25 weeks I am still in my usual clothes (probably helps that I live in stretchy dresses and leggings).

Anyone else? I seem to be surrounded by people who get whole new wardrobes.

Are you just 25 weeks now with your first baby?

PotteringAlong · 20/05/2020 17:51

Sorry, I’ve just seen you said third pregnancy. No, by my third pregnancy I was huge as I had no stomach muscles left and needed new clothes Grin

Apples6544 · 20/05/2020 17:56

I’m 35 weeks with first baby, have given in and ordered a few bits today just because it’s so hot and bump makes all my usual summer dresses inappropriately short!

justtb · 20/05/2020 18:02

16 weeks with first.. just ordered leggings, cycle shorts and some work skirt.. pj trousers and joggers. Absolute bare minimum.. I live in big t'shirts and stretchy maxi dresses in summer anyway 🤷🏼‍♀️🤷🏼‍♀️

OhArsebags · 20/05/2020 18:22

I bought some amazing beach dress things in stretchy material last year - so far so good, I think they will see me though the summer!

I might get some maternity leggings this time towards the end though as I did have to cut a slit the waist band of my usual ones in the last few weeks last time.

To be honest, I think I’m just a slob GrinBlush

There’s a photo of me 8 months pregnant with my first in a pair of Ex h tracksuit bottoms with a slit cut on each side of the waistband and one of his rugby tops. That was probably a low!

Excess fluid in 1st pregnancy and twins in 2nd so yes I bridge maternity clothes.
But mainly bottoms - leggings, surrey's, jeans. Ross I got a size bigger or they're already baby and same for dresses

Margo34 · 20/05/2020 18:33

I am 22 weeks and have splurged on a 2 pack of mat leggings. Otherwise like you in that I do not intend to buy a new warderobe for a few weeks wear.

Existing dresses, flowy loose tops, open cardigans, husbands hoodies and my current lockdown staple - dressing gown!!!

Not going anyway any time soon or expecting any visitors again until goodness knows, so why bother? Will save the money for a post baby warderobe when I'll maybe be feeling a bit low instead.

I just went for a couple of multipacks of t shirts and leggings for comfort. Working from home for foreseeable so planning on swanning around in a light robe all summer when I'm huge and hot!

Natalie654321 · 20/05/2020 18:41

Bought various maternity clothes with my first... And am buying more this time (only 15 weeka pregnant) although all the clothes I am buying I am making sure they are nursing friendly

SnuggyBuggy · 20/05/2020 18:42

I loved my belly bands. Saved me having to buy any new trousers. I did buy some tunic tops but they worjed just fine after the bump had gone.

Niffler2019 · 20/05/2020 19:11

With my first I did (7 years ago) and I may still have a pair of jeggings but I'm not wasting money this time round. I probably will have to buy some smart trousers or dresses for work when I return but I'm pretty slobby at home anyway 😂 My husband is a big guy so I'm planning to pinch some of his t shirts when I get really big and otherwise just wear baggy/floaty tops and stretchy dresses I already have. I really don't see the point in buying a new wardrobe for the sake of a few weeks and there isn't much choice anyway.

MooseBreath · 20/05/2020 19:14

I didn't want to get maternity clothes, but my boobs and tummy got so big that I had no option.

BumbleNova · 20/05/2020 19:20

I think it depends on your shape! I usually wear clothes that are tight around my waist so I've absolutely needed maternity clothes. Plus it's more comfy. I'm short too so I start showing early.

BabyDancer · 20/05/2020 20:10

I wasn't planning to - but then BooHoo had a 70% sale the other day on all women's wear including maternity! I got two tops, a dress, shorts and t-shirt PJs and jeans for £52. I was really proud of myself 😂

Boringnamechanging · 20/05/2020 20:16

I was an 8-10 pre pregnancy and by 8 weeks could no longer fit into my normal trousers. By 41 weeks pregnant I had the circumference of 4'11" there was no way I'd of managed without maternity wear. Second time I was even bigger.

I'm 5' 2 tall and dh is 6 foot and my babies don't fit in newborn clothes ever so there is bound to be a big bump. Whereas someone I know at 5'10 barely looked pregnant until right at the end.

LisaSimpsonsbff · 20/05/2020 20:22

I've seen people say they never bought maternity clothes but I think it must depend on your shape - I'm normally very pear shaped so none of my normal clothes fitted at all from quite early on, and I looked awful if I just tried to buy the next size up in normal clothes - it made me look bigger all over, not pregnant. But I was going to work so needed to look vaguely presentable. Also, it was my first so I went to parties and weddings and all sort of lovely things! If there's ever a no. 2 I definitely won't need going out maternity wear... Grin

If you just cut slits in tracksuit bottoms didn't they fall down if you moved?!

wonderstuff · 20/05/2020 20:29

I looked like I had a beach ball up my jumper with my second pregnancy! I wasn't out of maternity clothes for weeks after either. Looked like I was expecting twins (I wasn't). Definitely depends on your shape, I've got a short body, very hourglass. Rubbish for carrying babies and finding trousers that fit.
Bet your tummy popped back to shape too op. My youngest is 9 and my muscles are still separated.

heroineinahalfshell · 20/05/2020 20:34

I've bought maternity jeans & leggings which have been the best purchase ever as so comfortable! Then a couple of tops, pj's and 2 dresses suitable for nursing in the Jojo sale. Hoping not to have to buy any summery wear (bar a couple of t shirts) as I've got a few stretchy maxi dresses/jumpsuits that should see me through.

SecondStarFromTheRight · 20/05/2020 20:37

You're missing out. Maternity jeans are the comfiest trousers. I don't want to ever give them up.
I think if you shop carefully or have a certain existing wardrobe you can avoid buying maternity clothes. I didn't get any tops to accommodate my bump but I wear baggy clothes anyway so just filled them up. Trousers were different though. Got lots of leggings.

OhArsebags · 20/05/2020 20:45

Oh god I can’t ever find normal jeans that fit properly, let alone maternity ones!

Trackies didn’t fall down - I just snipped the band so it wasn’t tight.

But yes, I guess it all depends on shape abs how much you show/shape of bump.

I’m not sure how any one survives without maternity jeans! It’s much easier if you’re just at home - last few weeks I’ve just been living in leggings, but when I was at work/ out then defo needed some things a bit smarter

Siobhan1989 · 20/05/2020 20:50

I really didn’t want to as first baby and I’m usually a size 8 anyway - I figured I’d just buy a few things in a 10/12. However I have caved today! I’m not that big even at 33 weeks but I just feel so gross that I want some clothes that suit my shape. Gone for two cheap maternity dresses from boohoo and on the hunt for a midi skirt (which I can wear with my pre pregnancy stretchy tops I think) x

TinklyLittleLaugh · 20/05/2020 20:59

No I was very skinny and actually got skinnier as my bump got bigger and bigger. I looked quite ridiculous.

I had a couple of pairs of maternity trousers, one nice top and a couple of dresses. Got by at work with loose fitting shirts until maternity leave.
Our of work my usual leggings and DH’s t shirts did me for slabbing about.

Long time ago though and we were skint. I think it’s worth getting stuff if you can afford it.

mouse1234567 · 20/05/2020 21:02

I wear loads of baggy tops and dresses and so have found I haven’t bought anything much apart from maternity jeans and leggings. I’m 36 weeks.

TinklyLittleLaugh · 20/05/2020 21:04

Just remembered I also had a couple of maternity nighties and a matching thin robe from Next which were wonderfully comfy. The robe was then ideal for sitting up breastfeeding in bed on chilly nights.
