Anyone else not bothered with maternity clothes?

*Disclaimer - I’ve only ever worked from home or been a stay at home parent while pregnant, so I’ve never had to go anywhere or look smart.

Third pregnancy and while looking though some pregnancy forums today, I realised that I’ve never bought a piece of maternity wear. Mainly because I’ve never had the money to buy a new wardrobe for such a short space of time, it I’ve just never needed any.

Always just got by with my usual leggings, dressed and t shirts. I don’t tend to get a huge bump though. I am quite fat anyway, but at 25 weeks I am still in my usual clothes (probably helps that I live in stretchy dresses and leggings).

Anyone else? I seem to be surrounded by people who get whole new wardrobes.

Depends on your shape and where you work.

I needed work clothes as I'm a teacher.

I also needed jeans and longer vest tops. Some of my t shirts and jumpers were OK.

I'm 32 weeks on number two and rapidly outgrowing my maternity wear. Thought I'd have a few bits to see me through but nope, going to have to buy a few cheap bits in a size or two up.

The first person to comment on the size of my bump last time was my GP at an antenatal check. She asked if I was sure it wasn't twins, and wasn't joking. The last people were the surgeons in my c section commenting on the size of the bump to each other. 5'2" me, 6'2" DH, 9lb 7oz DD. I'm bigger this time too.

I've tried to buy nursing rather than maternity clothes so they will last longer. I plan to bf for quite a number of years so need quite a few nursing pieces Smile

@Nicknamegoeshere

I did this however after a few weeks I realised that the only nursing clothes I wore regularly were dresses because they weren't easy to get your boobs out of. I used all my old tops with a vest underneath and pulled my tops up and vest down. I found nursing tops more frustrating to use in many cases!

I’m usually a small 10, have to be very smart for work, and wear a lot of vintage stuff outside of work. Currently 19 weeks as a FTM and have just packed up almost all of my clothes as basically nothing fits or is appropriate. Relying on a capsule wardrobe of yoga pants, vests and cardigans (model’s own Wink) as well as a shelf full of maternity clothes (mix of great ebay bargains and a carrier bag of stuff given to me buy a friend who had her babies over the past couple of years).

My shape has changed, as has my need for smart work stuff, as I’m unlikely now to need it until I go back after maternity leave next year. I found my maternity stuff is way more flattering on than making do with existing clothes, so I’m totally embracing it Grin

Following this with interest as wear a lot of clothes that are tight around the waist due to them flattering my figure. Not even 12 weeks yet and finding them too tight so think I'll have to invest in bottoms for sure!
Just a tip for anyone expecting a winter baby, have a look at coats now as they're on sale. Got 2 to try from Jojo mama Bebe for £30 each which I plan on saving until it's cold and bumps bigger

I never needed them. My usual indoor clothes (tracksuit bottoms and t shirts) fit me the whole time. And going out clothes must fit me until between 6-7 months, then I just got the next size up in normal clothes when I needed to. Didn't have maternity clothes for labour either, just got normal clothes in the next size up.
After birth I was back in my normal size clothes within a month.

I didn't in first pregnancy! In this one, I have. Waistbands were really uncomfortable from early on so I've bought maternity jeans and leggings. Generally bought normal tops in a size up, but have some maternity tops. I've been much comfier!

KatnissMellark · 21/05/2020 11:49

I think it depends what shape you are to start with and how big you are/become. I'm an 8/10 hourglass normally and wear clothes that are nipped in at the waist as that's what suits me. No way could I have coped in normal clothes without looking an absolute shambles 😂 Luckily I have a few friends who pass bits around so haven't had to spend too much.

LisaSimpsonsbff · 21/05/2020 14:37

Isn't stretching out your clothes to avoid buying maternity clothes a bit of a false economy? I did that with a couple of maxi dresses and one jumper and they're all unwearable now because they got stretched out to the point of being ruined. If you did that with your whole wardrobe what would you wear once you no longer had a bump?

OhArsebags · 21/05/2020 14:49

I was chatting to a friend about this last night after reading all your opinions. She had to buy a whole new wardrobe as she was very tiny before pregnancy and was still tiny but with a beach ball bump!

As for clothes afterwards, sickness had always prevented me from gaining any weight at all in pregnancy so I’ve always been back in my own clothes (but like I said, I wear leggings, jersey dresses anyway).

This time round I’m the biggest size I’ve been in a pregnancy, a 16-18 so I think my size sort of helps too. And sadly I’m still being sick round the clock so I’ve not gained any weight, not that it’s a problem this time with a BMI of 37 Blush

Definitely depends on your shape, even maternity clothes didn't fit by the last month or so of my second pregnancy.

Zoey92 · 21/05/2020 15:22

I've stayed a size 10 throughout my pregnancy, but I'm all baby so i bought some maternity jeggings as fastening pants just was no longer comfortable, i got them from new look & maternity vests
Didnt bother getting new joggers as i wore them loose anyways.

Bubblysqueak · 21/05/2020 15:32

I bought tops, jeans and some dresses from eBay, wore them throughout both pregnancies and then passed them on to a friend.

Camia · 21/05/2020 16:56

I'm 29 weeks with my first and have a few pieces my sister gave me but I haven't bought anything myself. I mainly live in leggings or stretchy shorts and big tshirts. I work from home so I don't really need to dress up and I'd rather put the money towards baby things.

BeautyAndTheBump1 · 21/05/2020 18:28

I havent brought any maternity clothes, I just upped a size in my trusty primark leggings and wear them under the bump, and also wear my stretchy tops and jumpers. Tbf I spend most of my time in pyjamas Grin

PixieN · 21/05/2020 19:32

I love my maternity jeans - they’re so comfy, I don’t think I want to give them up! I bought a bundle of maternity clothes second hand so didn’t spend a fortune and they’ve been brilliant.

2007Millie · 21/05/2020 19:34

Never bought a single maternity clothing item. It was great
