C section - where were you on the list?

Layladylay234 · 19/05/2020 16:54

I've been given the option of maybe going last on the list for C section and possible getting more time in recovery with my partner as there might not be anyone following me if I'm last (emergency's excepting of course)

Anyone who's had a c section - where were you on the list and what time did you have it?Where would you choose to be?

I think I was a surprise addition to the list on the day - not an emergency, wasn’t in labour or anything, but had severe pe. Got told at around 9/10am the babies were being born that day, in theatre by 14.30, babies both born by 15.19. I know there was one other woman on my ward who went before me, but don’t know if they had any others after.

The whole nil by mouth was horrible, I was desperate for a drink so I think I’d pick slightly earlier if I had a choice just so I wasn’t awake for so long without a drink!

@layladylay234 - my first c-section was emergency and late at night. My second was planned and it was postponed a day. I had been slotted in for second of the morning but kept getting bumped because of emergency ones. I ended up having to go home and come back next day and was placed first on list. Very frustrating because we had t change childcare situation etc (we have no local family). It also made me anxious and feeling “off” given Id prepared myself mentally. Keep in mind, I also had a two year old at home who had never spent one night away from me since she was born, so that was very tough for me (& her) too.

I would highly recommend requesting to be first in morning. This time around for me (3rd & last baby), I am booked in for 7am arrival and c-section to commence at/by 8:30am, depending on emergency sections.

Heismyopendoor · 19/05/2020 17:08

First was an emergency.
Second I was second on the list and got taken in at about 11 into surgery.
Third I was first and was taken in at 9.

All times I had to be there for 7am.

Personally I would want to go first as my hospital only has a certain amount of private rooms. They give them to people who have had sections and those who don’t have babies with them. With my second section I couldn’t get a private room as the person who had the first section got it before me 😂

But i don’t know what I would if it was happening right now.

bathorshower · 19/05/2020 17:11

I was first, and that's definitely what I would choose given the choice, as I too hate fasting. But I'd been admitted 10 days earlier in case I went in to labour (which would have been potentially fatal for DD). It was clear that going first was a perk offered to those who were already in hospital, so you may find that slot isn't available!

Squaretoe · 19/05/2020 17:11

My second c section I was first, she was born at 9:54am. My third c section I was also first, she was born at 3:02pm. There were two emergencies ahead of my that time. You don’t get to choose whether you go first or second, I’ve never heard of anyone having a choice tbh, the hospital team decide that morning.

UnicornMadeOfPinkGlitter · 19/05/2020 17:12

First on the list both times. First section was an emergency one at 4am. The following two were planned for breech and I was first both times.

Would definitely choose first if I could. But then I’ve not been last on the list. I was later on that list for a gynae op and it was horrible waiting around for hours. Couldn’t go anywhere. Just able to go from my cubicle to the toilet and back again. Not allowed to drink or eat. Was a very long morning.

Squaretoe · 19/05/2020 17:13

Oops just read that you have the choice! I’d choose to go first, fasting isn’t fun.

Layladylay234 · 19/05/2020 17:13

Thanks all. I don't think I have the option to request to go first as they said today that inpatients would go first. They have suggested I request to go last as I was asking how long my partner could stay, and they said if I went last, he might be able to stay longer as no one would be behind me on the list, so I may get to stay in recovery longer.

First on the list due to latex allergy - I even took precedence over pre-eclampsia. He was born just before 10 am, I'd gone in for about 7 that morning. The next on the list was born an hour later.

His older brother I went in the night before but he got impatient so planned section turned into emergency one and he arrived around 7 am.

HeyDuggeewhatchadoin · 19/05/2020 17:15

First thing. I was starving as it was, and having to get up early with a toddler anyway so would have been sat waiting.
I wasn't "first" on the list, but showed up before the first woman so they sent me in.

Squaretoe · 19/05/2020 17:18

If you choose to go last and there are several emergencies that come in, you run the risk of being sent home and having your section postponed. I’d have hated that after waiting all day! Before my last c section I spent a few hours in a grump waiting to be sent home Grin thankfully we were called down about 2:30pm but if there had been a third emergency we may have ended up being sent home.

Fandoozle1 · 19/05/2020 17:19

I was last on the list (3.30pm).
They explained that on the morning they had discussed which cases had priority due to existing health conditions (plus one emergency which came in).

Chardonnay73 · 19/05/2020 17:20

I turned up at 7am as requested for a planned section. Due to emergency after emergency I didn’t go down until 7pm. Nil by mouth, hottest day of the year. My nerves were in shreds by the time I was called, so definitely first on the list!!

ChloeR81 · 19/05/2020 17:20

4th on the list (excluding emergencies), ended up going in at 4:30pm and there was talk of sending me home to come back the next day as they didn’t think they’d fit me in at all! Nil by mouth all day to the extent they had to give me a cannula mid afternoon (by the nurse, very painful), plus was awful waiting around all day getting increasingly anxious about the operation. I mean, over all was fine and I wouldn’t want anyone to panic if they’re bottom of the list, but I would not recommend voluntarily going end of the list, early as possible would be much better.

Ratbagratty · 19/05/2020 17:21

First was an emergency at midnight, I was under general anesthesia so I don't know / remember first few days.

Second I was first of the day because of previous Emergency and that I was 40weeks and high risk so didn't get a choice. It was lovely, no worries about not drinking/ eating. Got there and within the HR was down to theatre.

I would always pick early 😊

Theweasleytwins · 19/05/2020 17:21

I was first with my twins as there is a higher risk with twins (obviously as two babies😅) went in at 9.30 and had them at 10.30ish
And was last with my singleton, about 18.30 due to labour not progressing

ChloeR81 · 19/05/2020 17:22

Haha, snap Chardonnay73 , exactly the same!

amazedmummy · 19/05/2020 17:22

I was first and DS was born at 10:02. The only thing I would have struggled with would have been nil by mouth for that long as I was getting pretty thirsty

Layladylay234 · 19/05/2020 17:36

Mine is a maternal c section as well so no physical health reasons. So I can't imagine I'll be first on the list anyway. I'd have thought 2nd or 3rd. If it's a choice between 2nd and getting 20-30 mins in recovery with BP or going 3rd, and getting longer, I'd prob choose 3rd. But it's so hard to know

OP posts:
amazedmummy · 19/05/2020 17:46

I was also a maternal request with no other complications. First baby so no previous sections. They put me first possibly because I was an easier case?

userabcname · 19/05/2020 17:50

I have no idea! Mine was an ELCS. They told me they wouldn't let us know running orders and I just had to be ready to go as soon as I was called. I arrived at 7am and was called at 11.15am. I don't know where I came in the list but was pleasantly surprised as I'd been told they were busy and I might not be called until 4pm or 5pm. I'd have loved longer in recovery though- it was so peaceful and the midwife was right there to help with feeding / second rounds of toast and tea! It was bliss!

AncientRainbowABC · 19/05/2020 17:59

I was last on the day’s list for a planned section last year. We were asked to arrive by midday - section not until 8pm because of emergency twins or something like that. They did a good job of keeping us updated on likely timings, as much as was possible.

DD was born at 8.32pm. They do let you have a bit of water every so often if the wait drags on, but it was still pretty unpleasant. If it wasn’t for DH, I’d have sacked it off for a pizza at about 6pm! They did give us the option to come back the next day but we didn’t want to for various health reasons.

But, I think similar to you OP, we were able to stay in our recovery room until about 10am the next day as it was so late. Don’t know it it would be the case now. I couldn’t have done without DH for the first few hours - was massively out of it and he was there to give me water, rock our DD, help BF and talk me out of naming her after the MW!

It’s a wild but special time and I hope you have a good run. My best tip (probably from MN) is to bring drinks like tomato juice or V8 in case you come out hungry but aren’t yet allowed to eat, fills you up a bit more than a sugary drink.

AncientRainbowABC · 19/05/2020 18:06

Forgot to say - if I were doing it again, I would still like to go later in the day bc things somehow seemed calmer into the evening/overnight. It was also nice to get ready at home and not be in a huge rush.
However I would want to avoid specifically 8pm, if that were possible, bc that was shift changeover time and it felt like there was a constant shuffle of people in and out of the theatre at the start of my section, when I was sitting on the table waiting to get the epidural. Felt a bit like rush hour at a major train station.

Delbelleber · 19/05/2020 18:16

Waiting around all day when you're starving and thirsty is no fun.

OhArsebags · 19/05/2020 18:24

I was first for Dd. Got there at 7.30 am but wasn’t taken into theatre until 11am as there was an emergency.

Ds was an emergency section - I had an elective planned but went into labour so arrived at 11am and they have me straight in as theatre was empty he was born 11.45.

I have no idea this time. I’m supposedly booked in for 24th August, they Keep saying they have done it but I diss ape are on the system. Three times now they have tried to book me in.
