C section - where were you on the list?

I've been given the option of maybe going last on the list for C section and possible getting more time in recovery with my partner as there might not be anyone following me if I'm last (emergency's excepting of course)

Anyone who's had a c section - where were you on the list and what time did you have it?Where would you choose to be?

It completely depends on whether you feel you could fast (which also means no water) for a pretty long time. The usual guidance is 6-8 hours but if your timing is flexible they will ask you to fast from midnight. Given that the wards are absolutely baking this might be very difficult indeed.

I was last and it was rubbish. Was supposed to be in at 2pm, didn't end up being wheeled into theater until 4pm because I was bumped because of an emergency, then the sodding bed broke in the OR. I could hear my consultant pitching a fit about the delay from the other side of the curtain Grin.

I had to sit around all day, starving and thirsty because I had to fast from the night before and stop drinking after 9am I think.

I was first on the list; went in at 9.30 and DS was bored just before 10am. There were two other ELCS planned for the day. Neither of them got done because of a complicated EMCS. As it was, I didn't go up to recovery until about 4pm.

Interesting thread thanks for all the info! Just wondering how long the stages are, preparation, the surgery and time in operating theatre and then the recovery room before moving to the ward? Is the recovery room usually just you and your baby and partner?

I am booked in on 5th June and very nervous

At my hospital they try to do more complex cases first. In the grand scheme of things it doesn't really matter but I'm assuming due to covid you want to be last as your DH can't come to the ward? If that's the case I would ask to go last but go in with an open mind that I could be postponed for a day if several emergencies happened.

@JKD1982 my youngest is nearly seven now so memory isn’t the best. But I’m pretty sure that from walking into the theatre to being wheeled out with baby was right around an hour.

The recovery where I had all my kids had all the ladies and partners that were having planned sections that day. My hospital done 3-4 planned ones a day and that’s how many beds and curtains there were.

Thanks everyone for your responses. I had a call with the deputy head of maternity today and she said she hadn't realised I had gestational diabetes (although that's not why I'm having a c section) and in that case, I'd prob go first. But she did say she would email the surgeon and anesthetist and ask if it was in any way possible for my BP and I to have more time in recovery due to my anxiety and mental health. Which was fab of her, even if it doesn't happen, I appreciate their help so much. This hospital have really gone above and beyond and I'm so grateful to them
