Skincare and makeup?!

How strict was/is everyone about checking their makeup/skincare?! I know retinoids and sacylic acid are no goes but my friend told me I shouldn't use glyconic acid either (toner I use daily) and also read online that my foundation is unsafe!! Is it just scaremongering or do I need to actually look through all my products 😂🙈

Really? I never knew this was even a thing? I've been using all my normal products!

Tbug · 06/05/2020 09:32

Oooh good @raindrop83, I'm going too 🙈😂

I used face masks with sacylic acid, glycine toner, didn’t change any of my make up or skincare routines and my baby is healthy and no issues in my pregnancy. I used them more out of ignorance, didn’t realise until 3rd trimester that it was an issue, spoke to my midwives and consultant about it and my consultant laughed and said as long as I was going for high strength chemical peels, it was fine.

Tbug · 06/05/2020 09:36

Ah amazing, that makes me feel better, cos a lot of places online say glyconic acid is fine so I'm just going to use it every other day instead of everyday!

I been trying to avoid parabens and pthalates, as well as retinoids and sacylic acid.. also switched to non nano mineral sunscreen and natural deodorant. It's probably overkill but I'm a bit paranoid Hmm

I thought glycolic acid was ok though??

quarantinevibes · 06/05/2020 09:42

I had no idea, I’ve still been using my face wash with salicylic acid and glycolic toner almost daily Shock Going to have a look in to it thanks OP. Thank goodness I’ve been too tired for any retinol before bed Grin

Girlmum91 · 06/05/2020 09:52

I think they say nail polish is to be avoided and probably best to tone the makeup down a bit to avoid toxins but I wore eyeliner and mascara all the way through my last pregnancy and had a healthy baby Wink. Maybe look into organic versions?

raindrop83 · 06/05/2020 09:53

As if there isn't enough to worry about during pregnancy! 🤣

Mc3209 · 06/05/2020 09:57

I've stopped the retinoids, but still continuing with glycolic acid. I have to say it didn't even enter my head to check the make up safety, has been using my normal stuff (although a lot less than usual thanks to the lockdown).

Tbug · 06/05/2020 09:58

Oh wow @KnobwithaK!! That is dedication 🙊 yeah I'm gunna use glyconic!
@quarantinevibes hahaha don't stress too much 🙊
@Girlmum91 yeah i do have some 'safe' foundations but will probably still use my fave one!
@raindrop83 yeah exactly! Might pretend I never saw anything on Google haha!

Tbug · 06/05/2020 09:59

Yeah @Mc3209 I'm hardly wearing it cos I'm a nurse so I can't wear under masks anyway so when I do wear it I'm gunna wear my usual!

I’ve stopped using retinoids and products containing caffeine. There is a website that lists pretty much every brand you can think of and their products and tells you if it’s safe for pregnancy, breastfeeding or both. I can’t remember what it’s called just now but it’s easily googleble.

Tbug · 06/05/2020 10:48

Yeah I found that, that's where I saw my foundation wasn't safe 🙈🙊

Hey ladies, a lot of products will be considered “unsafe” due to the fact your skin sensitivity changes in pregnancy making you more prone to an allergic reaction, same thing with hair dyes, there is nothing in the products that will cause any harm to the baby, they just can’t be tested of pregnant women for obvious reasons therefore can’t be deemed totally safe😊

MrsEnger · 06/05/2020 11:02

I use BeautyPedia and ewg.org's skindeep sites to filter out "safest" products to use, since I planned to conceive.

It was a lot of work finding the right thing though, but it's worth it, once you find a few suitable items per category, you can stick to it.

For skin care, I went even further and made my own DIY ones. That takes practice. An easier option is to simply buy pure organic shea butter, it's very nice to use on its own, you can also whip it up like cream as well.

Tbug · 06/05/2020 12:19

Omg @SmileyCloud I never thought of it like that, thank you 😍😍😍

@MrsEnger aww DIY sounds good, I'll try some if I have any time x

Glycolic and salicylic are both fine. It's only really retinol to avoid, but that is probably ok too but they just don't dare test it. I still avoid retinol just in case though.

Natalie654321 · 06/05/2020 12:43

I didn't even think of this!! My daughter is now a healthy 10 month baby :)

Tbug · 06/05/2020 13:50

Thank you everyone ❤️🥰 feel much better now Xxxxx

I havent used anything different & im due this week :)

raindrop83 · 08/05/2020 06:42

So after having no idea that certain products shouldn't be used during pregnancy I realised last night that my night cream has retinol in - it's the Olay Retinol 24 one, should I stop using it??? 🤷🏻‍♀️

Jay0512 · 08/05/2020 07:45

@bee222 do you have the link for the website please? I stopped using retinoids but I read somewhere that salicylic acid was fine as long as it was ingested, maybe I should stop using it?

Whiffle77 · 08/05/2020 08:03

Yes @raindrop83 without a doubt.
@jay0512 I posted one above - salicylic is fine to use

Cherryrainbow · 08/05/2020 09:34

I don't remember this being a panic at all with my first child, just used whatever products, all went fine.
This pregnancy has been slightly different- due to the lockdown I just haven't worn makeup anyway as no one sees me lol. I doubt I'll be worrying about it tho if I do choose to use anything x

raindrop83 · 08/05/2020 10:19

I'm so confused, I never knew face products would be an issue?! Any recommendations on a good safe day and night cream then? I'm 36 so need something quite heavy duty for the wrinkles!! 🤣
