Am I likely to have an anterior placenta again?

I realise it's probably one of those things you can't predict, but I'm interested to know how likely it is that I might have an anterior placenta this pregnancy after having it in my first (and only) pregnancy?
I'm really hoping I dont this time as it took a long while for me to feel kicks, and it took ages before I was showing and even when I did get a bump it wasn't a lovely rounded bump, it was a B-shaped bump which I always felt self conscious of. I know it's a silly thing to worry about, but I guess I'm just hoping for a different experience this time 🤷‍♀️x

I think it’s totally random and just where it happens to implant itself - not 100% sure though and I’m certainly no expert!

TangBloodyFastic · 05/05/2020 12:06

Hi @katnissx sorry I can't answer your question as I am pregnant with my first but maybe you could answer mine?
I was told mine is anterior, does this mean placenta mean the likelihood of a smaller bump?

olivesandpecans · 05/05/2020 12:07

I’m expecting dc3 next week. DC1 and 3 both anterior, DC2 posterior. Felt kicks much earlier with both dc2 and 3 as knew what I was feeling. Bizarrely both dc with anterior placenta are boys!

TangBloodyFastic · 05/05/2020 12:07

Sorry extra wording in there for some reason!

user1488622199 · 05/05/2020 12:07

I had an anterior placenta with my first but not my second. I know someone who had the opposite with their children. I think it’s just random chance, try not to worry too much

Katnissx · 05/05/2020 12:20

Thank you for the replies, I thought as much with it being random so just pot luck I guess, will have to just wait and see!

@olivesandpecans that's an interesting theory there! My anterior placenta was also a boy! I wonder if anyone has had the same experience..

@TangBloodyFastic how far along are you? I think everyone is different so it does depend, but I think it can be more likely to be a smaller bump as the baby grows towards the back of your body rather than pushing out front. In my case I think I was around 24 weeks when I started to show which was quite late and as I mentioned my bump didn't really go fully round until I was basically in labour haha. I used to put a folded up piece of tissue under my top where my bump dipped in (around my belly button) to make it look rounder 😳 I did still have a fairly big bump towards the end of my pregnancy but it just took a while to get there xx

Thanks @Katnissx I'm only very early, 11+5, but haven't actually read up on what anterior placenta actually means for your pregnancy other than feeling movement later.
I have lower back problems, which was corrected by surgery a number of years ago, I was hoping a smaller bump would make things easier on my back! Guess I'll just have to wait and see won't I

Did either of your anterior pregnancies end up being back to back?

Katnissx · 05/05/2020 12:32

@TangBloodyFastic ahh fingers crossed then, you never know!
The midwives suspected baby was back to back at one point in my labour due to where my pain was, however they literally couldn't examine me until I had an epidural so don't know for sure x

@TangBloodyFastic oh and congratulations! I'm coming up to 8 weeks now 😊

I'm a FTM with anterior placenta and having a girl. I can't answer your question but find it interesting what you said about a B- shaped bump...That's exactly how mine is and I've been wondering if it was the placenta!

SunbathingDragon · 05/05/2020 12:36

It’s been 50/50 for me whether the placenta is at the front or back but I was biggest with DC4 so think it’s more to do with number of pregnancies than where your placenta is.

Sereneren · 05/05/2020 12:39

I've had 3 babies and only my last pregnancy with a girl was anterior.

WreckTangle95 · 05/05/2020 12:40

I've had four babies, my first two were posterior placenta, thirdbaby was anterior, and my fourth baby was posterior. I think it's totally random, just depends where abouts in the womb the egg attatches

onlyreadingneverposting8 · 05/05/2020 12:44

I've had 8 babies and only one pregnancy have I had an anterior placenta. Funny enough it didn't really affect when I felt the baby move at all...felt him at 17 weeks.

Katnissx · 05/05/2020 12:52

Ah I guess that dispels the theory then 😅
Interesting to hear other people's experiences, thank you for the replies.
@sel2223 yeah, I did a bit of looking into it at the time and it seemed to be due to having an anterior placenta from what I found

Totally random, just wherever the egg implants.

DC1 was anterior (girl), DC2 anterior (boy), DC3 posterior (sex unknown, 26wk pg). My bumps have got bigger earlier with each subsequent pregnancy and been round bumps each time. I think it completely depends on your body's physiology.

I definitely felt DC3 much earlier than DC1 and 2 due to placenta location, plus kicks and movements are much much stronger this time round.

I think it's one of those things that's it's tempting to try and read a difference between sex of baby etc, but in reality it just varies from woman to baby to pregnancy.

Congrats on your lovely news OP Thanks

MummyHandley · 05/05/2020 16:50

I had an anterior with my first and hardly felt any movement and then posterior with my second. Felt so much movement with the second, it was amazing but I think it is just pot luck. Fingers crossed for you x

sestras · 05/05/2020 17:02

I had that with both first and second pregnancy.

Dilbertian · 05/05/2020 20:51

I had posterior, anterior, posterior. All the babies were perfectly positioned for labour, though 2 and 3 didn't engage until a week or two before they were born. I was bigger with each pregnancy. The size you get has more to do with the condition of your abs than anything else. My abs were clearly about as strong as sheets of cooked lasagne!

Apart from feeling the kicks less and seeing my belly move less, having an anterior placenta made absolutely no difference.

Treaclepie19 · 05/05/2020 20:54

I've had:

  1. posterior, boy
  2. anterior, boy
  3. anterior, not sure yet!

Little frustrated at another anterior because I know I'll be worried about movements 🙈

Hodge85 · 05/05/2020 21:07

FTM here, currently 34 weeks having a little boy Grin and I have an anterior placenta. I've felt proper movements since 16 weeks so you never know, even if you have an anterior again it might be positioned differently to what you've previously experienced Smile x

Madwife123 · 05/05/2020 21:15

A B shaped bump isn’t anything to do with the placenta, it’s the position of baby. If they are back to back there isn’t the rounded spine to push your bump outwards so it looks more B shaped. Likewise if you’re already carrying extra weight this can give you a B shaped bump.

gonewiththerain · 05/05/2020 21:21

Anterior placenta for dc1, a boy first movement felt at 16weeks and he hasn’t stopped moving since.
Currently pregnant with dc 2 placenta is on my right hand side. Didn’t feel anything until 20 weeks and then not much. I’m definitely carrying differently and can see the kicks this time

sel2223 · 05/05/2020 23:09

@Madwife123 interesting theories on the B shaped bump but I don't think it's either of those with mine.
I may not be the smallest of women but I am pear shaped so carry all my weight around the bum/hips/thighs with a flat stomach normally so don't think it's an excess weight on the belly thing.
My bump has been like this since it first appeared but baby has been in a variety of positions whenever I've had a scan. The bump never changes no matter what position she's been in so can't imagine it's that either.
The top half of the 'B' has been rock hard since it first appeared which is why I thought it might be the placenta. I'm not worried about it, just curious.

SophieInTheSky · 05/05/2020 23:23

I had an anterior placenta and my baby was born back to back. I had a ‘normal’ bump so I don’t think there’s a link between an odd shaped bump and an anterior placenta.
