Can’t eat anything. HELP

I’m 7+2 and I’m going crazy with nausea and an upset stomach. I can’t seem to keep anything down. Yesterday I managed a raw carrot, an apple and some salt and vinegar crisps but even that was a struggle. The day before it was a microwave rice sachet. The upset tummy has been around for 10-12 days now and I’m worried my baby isn’t getting the nutrients it needs as I’m struggling to eat and everything I do eat I can’t keep down.

Any suggestions? Tips? Help? Advice?

Thank you!!!

Are you managing to stay hydrated? Don’t worry too much about the baby: they’ll be getting all they need.

Call your midwife and asked for advice, as I was prescribed anti-sickness meds. I’ve never had an upset stomach with morning sickness, so not sure about that one.

Try eating tiny bites of food rather than attempting a meal. I found I could sometimes manage beige food: crisps, plain baked potato. I found fruit pastilles and lucozade helped! I couldn’t stomach tap water but could manage squash with bottled water.

Pinkblueberry · 03/05/2020 13:05

It’s horrendous I know, but don’t feel bad for your baby - it’s tiny and doesn’t need much from you at all yet. Just eat what you can. If it’s just microwave rice and apples that’s not bad going really. I was the same, all I could stomach was plain beige food and a few types of fruit. Obviously if you struggle to keep down anything or eat anything at all, especially fluids then do speak to medical professional, there are things they can do to help. Otherwise, hang in there. And feel free to punch anyone that even dares to mention the word ‘ginger biscuit’ Flowers

JKD1982 · 03/05/2020 13:08

Sorry to hear you feel like that. Have you tried a baked potato. It’s all I could eat for a while. And you can eat it over a period of time even if it goes cold

JKD1982 · 03/05/2020 13:08

Oh and bananas!! I had 2 a day

Superscientist · 03/05/2020 13:32

My gp told me to just eat what I could when I could and that the baby will take everything it needs it will just me that will suffer. I was prescribed anti nausea meds in the end as I was loosing quite a bit of weight and it my mental health was suffering because of it all.
Don't be afraid to speak to your midwife or gp about it, I wish I had asked sooner I just thought it was something I had to put up with and didn't realise they could help.

2007Millie · 03/05/2020 13:36

Absolutely don't worry about baby.
They will get everything they need from your blood/bone marrow etc. You could not have anything other than fluids and they would be fine. But do seek medical help if it becomes severe

sel2223 · 03/05/2020 14:17

It's awful isn't it. My sickness was the worst from weeks 7-11 and I ended up getting anti sickness meds from the doctor.
I was just living off salted crisps and crackers with the occasional fizzy sweet thrown in.
I did take multi vitamins and used to try really hard to keep them down so they could get into my system (it didn't always work but I tried).

It does get better for the vast majority of us....I'm the opposite now at 25 weeks: constantly hungry and eating anything and everything!

Rose559 · 03/05/2020 14:19

Thank you @Greenmarmalade. Yes managing to stay hydrated. Probably not as much as I should have but having over a litre a day. I haven’t got a midwife yet, I have my first appointment on the 13th May so trying to battle through until then.

@Pinkblueberry I’m the same with the plain beige foods, dry too, I can’t stomach anything that is fatty whatsoever, had an oven chip yesterday and it was awful when I’ve never even noticed the fat before! I haven’t been sick yet, just feel it constantly but am going to the loo 3 times a day at least.

@JKD1982 may actually be able to stomach a baked potato! I’ll try that!!

Thanks @Superscientist. That’s put me as ease a little. Just feel awful for the baby that I’m not able to eat.

Thanks @2007Millie!

@sel2223 I’ve been told now is the worst time which I would have never imagined. Definitely didn’t think I’d feel this awful this early on. I’m SO glad I’m not working although do have to do a 4 hour shift on Wednesday which I’m worried about as I’m not planning on telling anyone until at least 12 weeks. I can’t wait to be hungry!!!!

please dont suffer in silence! i am now 10 weeks pregnant and had constant nausea and sickness from 6 weeks dead on, it was absolutely horrendous and ive lost 8kg in the process. i gave in and went to the doctors last monday and then was told i had HG, even if they dont think u have it, ask for anti sickness meds! dont wait until may 13th, you need to keep yourself as hydrated as possible! drink little and often, i found mash potato (cold) and cheese on crackers was all i could eat for 3 weeks solid.
give it a go, hoping you feel much better soon xxx

Sb131216 · 03/05/2020 15:27

I feel your pain! 7 weeks, barely able to eat or keep water down. I've been prescribed antisickness meds from my gp as I had HG with my dd. Have you tried getting seabands? £6 on amazon prime? They may help take the edge off

Babies suck everything out of you, they'll leave you with nothing and take what they need so don't worry about that, try getting some meds if you can and stay hydrated.

With my dd I found sometimes things like a plain baked potato, Ice lollies, dry toast, Crumpets, salted crackers or sucking on fruity sweets can help, even if you have one mouthful it's better than nothing.

Hope you feel better soon

Rose559 · 03/05/2020 15:49

@OoOoBabyLove has it eased off at all or do you feel just as bad now? I’ve lost 2kg in just over a week so far and I usually struggle to lose weight. I’ll give mash a try, I’m also eating everything cold. I haven’t hot feel in over a week!

@Sb131216 I’ll have a look into seabands, thank you. It does feel like I’m on a boat constantly which may help. This is my first baby and haven’t told anyone yet so don’t have anyone to turn to other than here. I don’t have a clue what I’m meant to be doing!

Thank you both xxx

OoOoBabyLove · 03/05/2020 15:52

yes its eased off now definitely. i was given prochlorperazine. i think there are a few types though that they can prescribe.

i love cold everything now! haha. i eat cold chicken nuggets now too!! even smelling hot food im like bleeeuuurrgh no thankyou.

i really do hope you feel better xx

Superscientist · 03/05/2020 16:39

I forgot to say I found my gp more helpful than my midwife whose only advice was to eat a cracker before getting up.
I found my sickness worse from 5 - 9 weeks fortunately /unfortunately this was over Christmas and new year not much fun but meant I didn't have to take much time off work.

Sb131216 · 03/05/2020 16:57

Ah congratulations :) so exciting but its hard when you are waiting to tell others too. I have to keep reminding myself to cover up the bands when we video call family!
Hope you find something useful and it eases soon

ElsaCC · 03/05/2020 19:42

I'm 7+4 today and have exactly the same problem since middle of 6th week. The seaband help a little but dont take the nausea away, I keep them on 24/7 now. Dont know if for you the sickness is worse in the morning or evening but I find that eating 1 or 2 different fruits in the morning helps a little. I then nibble on crackers in the afternoon and try to have a small meal or more fruit on the evening. I too worry about not eating enough veg to get the vitamins for the babyConfused

Greenmarmalade · 03/05/2020 20:23

I barely ate a vegetable until week 16, including a twin pregnancy. Honestly, don’t worry- stay hydrated and eat bits of whatever you feel like.

I also found that pregnancy vitamins made me really nauseous and I was much better with just folic acid tablets.

Rose559 · 03/05/2020 22:16

@OoOoBabyLove. I’m glad to hear it’s eased off!! Thank you!!

@Superscientist thank you! I haven’t seen my GP or my midwife yet but have 9 days until my first appointment and cannot wait!

@Sb131216 it’s so difficult isn’t it! We’ve got 4.5 weeks until we can tell anyone and I’m hoping we’ll be out of lockdown by then!

@ElsaCC mine seems to be as soon as I wake up, relaxes a bit early afternoon then it’s bad again until lunchtime. I just managed my first a last food of the day which was cold mash potato and peas haha!!

@Greenmarmalade vegetables are some of the only things I’m able to eat, keep having carrot, peas and broccoli. I can’t stomach anything at all sweet or fatty but really craving salt. I haven’t been taking pregnancy vitamins, just folic acid and my B12 tablets so I can’t think it’s anything to do with that?

Sb131216 · 03/05/2020 23:51

If you are able to stomach some veg, a really simple basic chunky veg soup may be an idea?

I use kallo extra low salt stick cubes, they are tasty but bland enough to sometimes stomach. Add any veg you can manage - I always do carrots, potato and onion and maybe a leek with garlic and add thyme. If you have plenty of liquid and don't blend it then just take small bites or sips as and when. You can also add salt if that's what you are craving and if you can stomach dry toast or bread to dip in and nibble it may fill your stomach a little so it's not hunger nausea on top.

Do you think you could manage juice? Ice cold sips of apple or pear juice tonight have stayed down for me

Sb131216 · 03/05/2020 23:51

Stock sorry, not stick cubes..

ticktackted · 04/05/2020 05:31

hugs I was like this from 6-10 weeks and it was horrendous! I was literally eating Jacobs crackers and some days I could handle dry bran flakes. I nagged my GP until I got something that worked, they gave me cyclizine first which didn't help at all, then promethazine which was like magic. I took a big dose and it was very sedating (I'm still working out the house & didn't feel safe to drive myself!) but it meant I could eat and wasn't throwing up all the time. Different things work for different people, but if I'd carried on without meds I'd have ended up in hospital with ketones and dehydration. GP was fab. And hang in there - mine stopped as suddenly as it started in week 10, haven't been sick since and only some food aversions left. At my 12 week scan, baby's growth was ahead of where it had been at my private 8 week scan, too!

Rose559 · 04/05/2020 19:42

Thanks @Sb131216. I can stomach some veg but everything has to be plain and on its own. I made a batch of soup for lunches and my fiancé had to eat them as I just couldn’t stomach them.

I’ve managed 5 cream crackers and a whole packet of spearmint softmints today so I feel a lot better after some sugar. That’s the most I’ve eaten for a long time. 2.5kg lost in just over a week though😫

Thanks @ticktackted. I got my fiancé to get me Jacobs crackers after reading your post and I’ve managed 5! Really hoping mine stops by/before 10 weeks. I feel horrendous and don’t want to think about how much weigh I’ll lose if this carries on!

OP posts:
Theyweretheworstoftimes · 04/05/2020 19:57

Please see a GP or a nurse get your ketones tested.

I battled on and ended up very seriously ill in hospital.

I got a rollocking at A and E as i was so ill but I had been fobbed off by nurse, GP and midwife.

I was sick 50 times a day. My teeth are ruined. It stopped about 6 hours after I gave birth.

Please get help.

ticktackted · 04/05/2020 20:05

OP, you've lost a lot of weight, I lost 3kg in 3 weeks and my GP was very concerned! You may need to be seen, you are getting so little down you. GP can refer you even if you haven't booked yet, that's what mine wanted to do (but luckily what she prescribed that day helper a lot!) I also managed some sugary fizzy drinks which helped me stay out of ketosis. I'm amazed my baby was bigger than dates after all that tbh.

Lamentations · 04/05/2020 20:08

Oh it's the worst isn't it? I remember that. I swear I lost weight in my first trimesters.

Like others have said you really don't need to worry but keep hydrated. It sounds like you did well yesterday actually!
