Morning Sickness hell!

Is anyone else in morning sickness/all day sickness hell?! I didn't realise how bad it is - every time I think of food I want to vomit, every smell makes me sick, every time I move I feel nauseous, dry retching when I wake up, I hardly eat anything and when I do I have to just close my eyes and chew fast and try v hard to keep it down. I'm almost 7 weeks. Please tell me there are others feeling the same?! Envy

aww @kidsareok, I feel you! I had hyperemisis and struggled with this from weeks 6-10 and have never been so ill in my entire life. It was the worst.

I went to the Drs and they gave me medication for it. Please make sure that you're able to keep enough fluids down to prevent dehydration, as that can get really serious.

Foreverblowingbubbles18 · 29/04/2020 11:06

I was the same and then got some medication and it was the best thing ever - i'm only being sick once a day now which I can handle. Defo call your Dr.

zscaler · 29/04/2020 11:40

I’m 7 weeks today and starting to feel pretty wretched. I haven’t been sick, but the last couple of days I’ve been dry heaving a lot and any strong smell sets me off. Can’t think of food either, even typing this is making me queasy.

Fingers crossed you (and I!) feel better soon Flowers

userabcname · 29/04/2020 11:42

I had this in my first pregnancy- it is awful. Speak to your GP. Mine turned out to be HG. Couldn't even keep water down. Take care.

Superscientist · 29/04/2020 12:05

Speak to your gp, I had moderate morning sickness not bad enough for HG but enough for me to drop quite a bit of weight and it to negative pact on life and my wellbeing. My gp prescribed some anti nausea medication which really helped. I wish I had seen them earlier, I just mentioned it during a routine check for something else.

mumworkstudywine · 29/04/2020 12:18

I'm 9+4, finally broke down and got some cyclezine from the Docs yesterday after weeks of dry wretching and not being able to eat properly! Today I feel like a new woman. I've pop to the Docs if I were you, don't carry on struggling beaut x

kidsareok · 29/04/2020 12:28

Thank you! It seemed to start in week 6 and is just getting worse - I can keep food and liquids down but it's a real struggle and I'm just constantly on the verge of throwing up. It's making me feel pretty miserable and not sure I can sustain this for the next 4+ weeks. I'm a teacher and working on a rota when required during the coronavirus outbreak and I am so glad as I really don't know how I'd cope. I'll have a word with my GP - thanks everyone!

I had this, abruptly started in week 6 and got worse until I was just eating crackers and crying because I felt so awful! GP was great, I tried cyclizine which didn't help at all, I was just throwing up a foul tasting tablet! I then got promethazine which was magic, although pretty sedating. I also took omeprazole as reflux seemed to be part of the picture. It stopped as suddenly as it started halfway through week 10. I'm 13 weeks tomorrow and I'm funny about some smells and eating quite plain foods by my normal standards, but it's so much better.

In short: yes it's bloody awful, all my sympathy Daffodil don't be afraid to bother your GP, mine prescribed over the phone & sent directly to local pharmacy. And, I hope yours stops in a couple of weeks as mine did, so you can enjoy this otherwise happy time xx

LittleBoyJuly2020 · 29/04/2020 12:34

I'm 27 weeks and from week 7 the nausea and food aversions hit like a brick. I got medication at week 9 or 10 and stayed on it until week 18.
I wouldn't have functioned without it. Hope you get some meds soon x

LittleBoyJuly2020 · 29/04/2020 12:35

@ticktackted I had Promethazine too and it was bloody wonderful. I'm forever grateful to that drug!

ticktackted · 29/04/2020 12:50

@LittleBoyJuly2020 yeah it was SO good! Initially with the sickness I said right that's it we're having one kid only, but now I say we'll think about another but I'm getting promethazine as soon as we start trying & taking it before it escalates to as bad as it did!

CarterBeatsTheDevil · 29/04/2020 12:58

I'm pregnant for the third time (one miscarriage, one lovely daughter). Just six weeks today and I'm already retching occasionally. I console myself by reading stuff about how morning sickness means good strong hormone levels (although a sizeable number of women have perfectly fine pregnancies without heaving once, dammit) Grin

When I was pregnant with my daughter I basically lived on watermelon and Haribo for the first 15 weeks. It did get better but I found strongly flavoured food (curry, garlic, even chives for God's sake) very hard to eat right up until I gave birth...

CarterBeatsTheDevil · 29/04/2020 12:59

Oh, and nothing that anyone suggested worked for it. Couldn't tolerate lemon, ginger or mint. Couldn't bear dry biscuits in my mouth. So not only couldn't try any of the traditional remedies but had to put up with EVERYONE suggesting them on a daily basis!

Superscientist · 29/04/2020 13:24

I had the same, water and ginger were the worst things in the world.

I saw my midwife for the first time after the gp had prescribed anti nausea pills and she said "crackers can help sickness". I know she was trying to be helpful but after 5 weeks of nausea and sicknesses i think I would have come across the idea of crackers!
When I started to be able to eat I find strong flavours easier to manage anything plain made me gag.

CarterBeatsTheDevil · 29/04/2020 13:42

Oh God yes, water was the pits. Coffee and tea were completely out of the question too. I think I was basically using the watermelon as an all-purpose food. I was in this awful inbetween where I was being sick at least once a day, really violently, but not all the time so not really qualifying for HG interventions. A couple of times I burst a load of tiny vessels round my eyes and then had to go back into meetings as if nothing had happened...!

CarterBeatsTheDevil · 29/04/2020 13:42

If this pregnancy goes to plan then that's the state I'll be in by next week/the week after

kidsareok · 29/04/2020 18:09

Thanks for the replies people! I've been dozing on and off so I'm not sick but obvs can't do that when I'm working! So far I've managed 2 dry scones - and if I think about it I want to heave. Now I need to go and nibble on something else - fridge full of food but EnvyEnvyConfused. I'll try a cracker. Honestly when I thought about morning sickness I thought - can't be so bad, get up, quick chunder down the toilet, clear the old stomach and get on with the day - yeah sure Shock!!

I'm currently 29 weeks pregnant and had awful sickness between weeks 5 and 18. I really do feel your pain! I found that buttery crumpets helped - it was the only thing I could keep down for some reason!

Newmummyxx · 29/04/2020 20:16

@kidsareok Hi noticed your name from replying to my thread about choosing hospitals. My sickness also started at 6 weeks, during that time I also had corona virus symptoms so had an awful time all round. A lot of the days I spent in bed as I was being sick most of the day. Eat anything at all that you can stomach. I didn’t find that the famous ginger biscuits helped at all, I loved eating skittles, sweet muffins and lived on micro chips, I found that cold food was easier to eat too and usually less smell. If you can’t face food make sure you have the tiniest amount of water but very often. Just a little bit hope for you all, I’m just over 10 weeks and was only sick once at 9 weeks so hopefully it starts to calm down for you all. I now eat a biscuit as soon as I open my eyes, have a savoury snack at around 10 and a very early tea, I don’t fancy lots of things now but started to eat fruit and veg again. x

katieains · 06/05/2020 16:41

Hey,I'm only on day 4 of feeling horrifically ill all day. The waves do get worse but overall I just feel terrible all day. I like others just didnt envisage it being this bad.havent been sick but just felt it. Just sipping squash and trying to eat some toast.had a huge meltdown this morning to my partner as the thought of feeling this way for another 6 weeks blows my mind. I'm 6 weeks. It's just so debilitating and I can't read or watch TV to take my mind off it as feel so much worse.how long would you give it before calling the doctor or do you have to be physically sick for them to do anything?

Alychloe · 06/05/2020 17:09

It’s the worse feeling ever :( currently at 16+4 and suffered every day with nausea from 8 - 12 weeks then from 12 weeks onwards have been physically sick everyday! Sadly I have had zero support from my midwife and she told me to get on with it...so I have haha! Luckily I have been off work so it’s easier to ride it out when you are just back and fourth from your bed and toilet. Hoping it will ease off in the next few weeks!

Luckily my husband has been amazing and he will just make me something to eat, not tell me what it is and then when he brings it I just eat it because I haven’t pre-thought about it! So maybe try that!

If you start being physically sick often then definitely contact your GP and get some antiemetics prescribed :)

I watched life and birth last night and one woman said she had no morning sickness..I really envy those who don’t haha.

Superscientist · 07/05/2020 08:51

I was going by the NHS guideline which I think were weight loss of 5% or not passing urine in 8h or not being able to keep anything down for 24h. I saw my gp for something else and she didn't ask about any of that! I had just reached the 5% weight loss by their scales but could really only eat after 7pm and it was impacting my mental health.

I would also make sure you highlight the impact of the sickness on your wellbeing and mental health. It is important to maintain good mental health and well-being as much as physical health.

If I was to do it again I would probably see what I could do for a week - different foods and drinks etc and then try and get an appointment. If you are struggling to eat anything at all I would reach out sooner. The worse they will say is see how you go for a bit longer then come back in which case you are in no worse a position than when you started. They can also sign you off work if needed as well as prescribing medication.

katieains · 07/05/2020 15:44

I had another night of no sleep last night as felt sick all night.woke up this morning and felt no better so I thought bugger it I'm calling the doctor.he was super nice and prescribed some antihistamines so fingers crossed I get a bit of rest from this feeling.also bought some travel bands

kidsareok · 13/05/2020 14:38

Hi! Thanks for all the replies. How is everyone going with the sickness? I'm still in actual hell! Just wondering anyone has seen the second trimester light yet or needs some reassurance? If ever you feel bad - just think about me at 3am this morning, sick coming out of my mouth and nose and crying on the bathroom floor thinking about all of the times I actually thought I felt ill and actually was just being a wimp compared to this Confused! Sending strength

It's like being hungover and seasick at the same time isn't it? Really sorry, no practical advice, just bags of sympathy!
