Good Morning!

I'm 33 weeks pregnant today with my first baby. I'm due to have an ELCS in the 39th week (haven't had my date confirmed yet) but that means I only have 6+? before he's here and it's starting to feel very real.

Is anyone else around the same stage? How are you feeling? Do you have everything organised?

We managed to purchase the big stuff prior to lockdown and have been ordering the other bits and pieces we need online so we're more or less there. Just need to get the room sorted now and the hospital bags packed.

I’m 34 weeks today and nowhere near ready. I keep hoping lockdown is going to be lifted so I can go shopping 🙈

MentholChill · 28/04/2020 10:10

@Flipflops23 is this your first? I gave up on the idea of going shopping as even if/when the restrictions are lifted, I think I'll still feel a bit anxious about too much social contact before baby is here. Amazon (although they have increased their prices) and supermarket deliveries have been my lifeline for stocking up on what we need.

No, I’ve got 2 older children (16 & 12) this is my surprise baby. We don’t currently have space for number 3. Just had planning approved for an extension.
I was planning a home birth but the service has been suspended where I am so I’m currently trying to mentally prepare for a hospital birth. I really need to start thinking about packing a bag.
I’m also still working, I’m self employed and can’t work from home.
How are you feeling? I’m tired and uncomfortable a lot of the time.
Exciting now though to be on the final countdown 😀

Delbelleber · 28/04/2020 10:18

Hey. I am 36 weeks today and 3 weeks till my section date. I'm all organised! I purchased a few things on amazon last night like milk storage bags and a nursing bra. I'm going to hospital tomorrow for a growth scan and meeting with a consultant re gestational diabetes.
Really bored waiting around in lock down now, just want to fast forward 3 weeks. This is baby number 3 for me.

MentholChill · 28/04/2020 10:33

Aah, you guys must be pro's at this baby stuff now!

@Flipflops23 that's a shame about your planned home birth. Have you had a home birth before? I'm not feeling too bad (so far). Bump's starting to get in the way a bit and the heartburn and swollen feet aren't great but could be 100 worse. You must be knackered if you're still working.

@Delbelleber are you nervous about your section? I'm just hoping everything goes well and I can get home after 24hrs. Doubt things will have changed much re birth partners being allowed to stay/visit and don't want DH missing out on the first few days with his son.

Delbelleber · 28/04/2020 10:43

Not nervous so much for actual section, I've had 2 before. But the recovery bit is quite hard going especially as I'll be alone looking after the baby on the ward. I was pretty out of it after previous sections so dunno how ill manage changing nappies on my own and reaching stuff Confused but hopefully there will be staff about helping.
I'm not on good terms with babies dad. He wants to be at the birth but I don't want him around stressing me out so I don't know what to do for the best atm.
Why are you having a section? How are you feeling about it?

2020babym · 28/04/2020 10:48

I'm 33 weeks yesterday! Also feeling v organised and pretty much have everything sorted! I'm hoping to have a c section as high risk pregnancy and consultant led. I have a scan tomorrow so hoping to get it all sorted there and then.

Feeling a lot of pain at the mo- lower back pain is excruciating and I can't do much without pain so I'm thankful for the time at home and being able to be completely rested up! Baby moves LOTS, and rolls all the time so my belly actually feels a bit tender this morning!

MentholChill · 28/04/2020 11:04

@Delbelleber might be better for you go it alone if you feel he's going to stress you out, that's the last thing you need post surgery. Are your other kids old enough to help you out when you get home? I'm having a section by choice, no medical need. I did a lot of research about CS vs VB and felt more comfortable with the risks of a section. I'm not expecting it to be easy by any means but it's more controlled than spontaneous labour/birth (I'm a bit of a control freak).

@2020babym that's not so good about your back pain. My hips get a bit achy during the night from side sleeping but I'm generally fine during the day. My wee one is very active too, constantly rolling around. Do you know what you're having?

I'm not quite as far along as you I'm only 28 weeks but so excited this is also my first and I'm having a little boy I also managed to get nearly everything in before lockdown but only because I was so excited that it was my first baby. Have baby's hospital bag packed already just need to finish packing mine. Now I'm just buying little extra personalised things that he doesn't need but are so cute like dummy clips with his name on and swaddles with his name.

schafernaker · 29/04/2020 06:59

33 weeks and have been in and out of hospital with a very naughty baby so really need to get organised as we look like we are heading towards an early delivery 🙈

We have most bits as it’s 2nd DC but things like size 0 nappies stills need to be found

JKD1982 · 29/04/2020 07:15

Hi all! I’m also 33 +5 so on the final stages too for my first. I am excited and scared at the same time.
I went for a private scan this week just to replace the growth scans that I can’t do with the nhs at the moment to check he’s ok. He is a big baby they say from measurements. Kind of pleased as I hope that’s a good sign but also hope it isn’t GD as I didn’t do my GTT test.

Luckily we bought most things before lockdown so now it’s a waiting game. I’m working from home so assume I’ll work right up to the date. Can’t blame the commute from my bed to the kitchen laptop set up making me tired?!

Everyone must be so excited especially
Other FTM @MentholChill
Are you happy with the consultant care you’ve had? Are you nervous for the c section? It’s my husbands birthday the day after mine so really hoping I can come home and not stay in hospital x

MentholChill · 29/04/2020 09:04

Exciting times for all of us!

@schafernaker are you being induced?

@JKD1982 I had a 4D scan booked for when I was 29 weeks but it was cancelled unfortunately so we missed out on that experience which is a shame. I'm not having anymore scans as I've been measuring bang on at all my midwife appointments. I also wasn't offered the GTT as my urine samples haven't indicated anything to suggest I'm at risk (although I am 35 with PCOS so thought that would have been done as a precaution).

I'm a bit nervous about the section as I've never had any kind of surgery before. The bit I'm dreading the most is not being able to feel/move my legs, feeling sick due to the meds and having the catheter in 🙈 how are you feeling about it?

I've only met my consultant once and that was at the meeting we had to discuss my request for an ELCS (I'm having it due to maternal choice, not for medical reasons). I don't think I'll see her again until my pre-op appointment, she seemed lovely though, very supportive.

I think it's a minimum 24hr stay after a section as you will have a catheter in initially and then you'll have to be up and walking around and pass a specific amount of urine before they'll discharge you. I'm hoping to just spend the one night in hospital, especially as DH is unlikely to be able to stay after the birth.

schafernaker · 29/04/2020 09:13

@MentholChill likely a planned section as baby is very small and they don’t want to add any extra stress to it. Could be as early as Friday!

MentholChill · 29/04/2020 09:36

@schafernaker Aah, how are you feeling about it? It's such a stressful time to be pregnant and facing delivery during this pandemic without other complications playing a part. Obviously you and baby will be in safe hands but I can imagine it's still a bit anxiety inducing.

OP posts:
Delbelleber · 29/04/2020 09:38

@MentholChill I found the catheter the best part of the experience 😂 don't worry you won't feel it at all.

MentholChill · 29/04/2020 09:55

@Delbelleber I know they put it in after the spinal so won't feel it being inserted but do you feel it when the anaesthetic wears off? Do you feel the need to pee and just go for it or do you not feel the need at all? Does it hurt when they whip it out? Lol. Sorry for all the questions 🙈

Also, did they insert a painkiller suppository after the spinal? 😳

OP posts:
JKD1982 · 29/04/2020 10:23

@MentholChill sounds like you are very organised and planned well!
I am nervous about being in hospital full stop, I am a self confessed wimp so worried about the operation, mainly vomiting as I have a phobia and also just general pain and recovery. Lots of my friends have talked me through their experiences and it seems ok.

Which hospital will you go to? I wish I’d changed my original choice but too late to move now. I am really hoping they don’t change plans for elective c sections due to all the craziness at the moment. And I hope I don’t go into labour before the date as I think my EDD is wrong anyway!

FlyingLemur · 29/04/2020 10:31

@schafernaker
If you can’t find any pampers micro nappies, PM me as I have a packet I can probably send you at the end of this week.

MentholChill · 29/04/2020 11:04

@JKD1982 I've been focusing on the positive ELCS stories and spoke to a couple of friends who've had them which has calmed me down a bit. Everyone says that as long as you keep on top of the pain (take painkillers on a schedule, whether you feel you need them or not) then it's manageable. I don't like the sound of oramorph (which they give you at my hospital) as apparently it makes you feel quite out of it so I'm going to try and stick to paracetamol and ibuprofen if possible. I'm also taking my own stash in with me to make sure I take them when I need them (a tip I got from another thread) as the drugs trolley doesn't always come round in time.

Have you had your date through yet? I'm still waiting on mine, the consultant said I should receive it at around 34/35 weeks so shouldn't be long now. I'm having my baby at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary. How about you?

OP posts:
Delbelleber · 29/04/2020 11:14

You won't feel it at all and you won't feel the need to pee either which is amazing after all the weeks and months of constant peeing! You won't notice them taking it out either Smile

MentholChill · 29/04/2020 11:36

Thanks @Delbelleber I had visions of them turning me inside out pulling the tube out 🙈😂 the lack of a need to pee will be amazing, it's all I seem to do these days (as well as leak air from every orifice) 😳

OP posts:
Flipflops23 · 29/04/2020 12:34

@MentholChill yes I had a home birth with my son and it was a very chilled and easy experience so had wanted that again. Although I know every birth and experience is different.

I certainly don’t feel like a pro, it’s almost like being a first time mum. Everything has changed so much, or I’ve forgotten in 12 years. I alternate between wanting him out and hoping he stays in.

I’m off today so trying to relax and recover from a busy few days. I really must get organised and think about what I need to pack in my hospital bag. 🤔

MentholChill · 29/04/2020 14:16

@Flipflops23 I've literally just finished packing babies hospital bag. I've packed:

Nappies
Barrier cream
Wipes
Nappy bags
First milk pre-made bottles (in case there's an issue with BF)
1 x blanket
3 x muslin
4 x socks
2 x hats
2 x mittens
4 x sleepsuits (2 x up to 1 month & 2 x 0-3 months)
2 x long sleeved vests (1 x up to 1 month & 1 x 0-3 months)
12 x short sleeved vests (6 x up to 1 month & 6 x 0-3 months)
Coming home outfit

Do you think I've forgot anything?

It may be slightly overkill the amount of clothes as I'm hoping to only be in one night but you never know how things will pan out so better to have too much than not enough.
