Pregnancy weight gain

TTC2019xx · 25/04/2020 08:54

Started pregnancy weighing 10 stone, which is my heaviest weight. (Usually 9.7)

I’m now coming up to 27 weeks and weight 11 stone 7.

Is there a way to slow down weight gain. I ideally only wanted to get to 12 stone to the end!

Just remember a lot of this will be baby, placenta, blood etc etc
If you just eat a normal, healthy diet then you'll be fine. Also, if you breastfeed you'll burn a lot of calories.

TTC2019xx · 25/04/2020 09:25

Is it possible to only gain another 7 pounds in 13 weeks?!

I'm 27 weeks and have gained 7lbs. I started at about 10.10 stones though.
All my weight went on after the 22nd week. I read that the second trimester can be where you gain the most weight, and then it can slow down in the third trimester.
So you may not gain too much from here on out.

It's all likely baby anyway, unless your diet has drastically changed for the worse?
I've been watching calories and not eating any junk, hoping to limit the damage this way. I'm aiming for 20lbs max.

LillyLeaf · 25/04/2020 09:29

Op I'm exactly the same as you. 27wks tomorrow. I used to be just under 10 stone now I'm about 11stone 7pounds. According to my pregnancy app I'm on the right track but I am worried how much I'll put on at the end. I don't think this lockdown has helped at all. I've mostly stayed in and hardly exercised, I've decided to do more now as I'm starting to feel 'heavier' and it's not all bump.

LillyLeaf · 25/04/2020 09:32

And I'm not over eating either, probably a bit less than normal.

TTC2019xx · 25/04/2020 09:37

Lockdown definitely hasn’t helped!! I started at 8 stone before my daughter and gained 4 stone with her so I’m worried it’s going to go the same way as I never lost the weight!

On my last pregnancy I gained nearly 2 stone, and I weighed myself when i was in labour (to compare with after birth) and I lost 1 stone 4 pounds literally overnight by giving birth. My baby was only 7lbs 14. You would be amazed how much is in there! Just eat as well as you can, go for the odd walk, and try not to worry about it too much. It doesnt sound to me like you have excessively gained weight outside of the weight of the baby eyc.

TTC2019xx · 25/04/2020 10:00

Thank you everyone x

I was about 10 stone when I got pregnant I'm now 33/34 weeks and nearly 13 stone! I'm too scared to weigh myself again... can't wait to get baby out hoping it will drop off.

Try not to stress too much, I feel so rubbish at the moment. None of my clothes fit me, I've been living in maternity leggings I just don't see the point in buying expensive maternity clothes because I know I'll feel huge in them anyway. Quite unhealthy really but I'm glad we're in lockdown sometimes and no one can see how huge I've gone...

Just have to keep reminding ourselves it will all be worth it in the end.

TTC2019xx · 25/04/2020 10:26

Xmas ribbons. Do you remember how much you weighed at 27 weeks?
There’s no point in buying nice maternity clothes if we’re in lockdown anyway!

I'm not weighing myself, and my doctor isn't either! She looks at me and tells me I'm doing great, even though I feel a little out of breath the last couple of days and quite hefty! I have a history with eating disorders and I think that's why she doesn't put me on the scales. I do think I'm doing ok, and just walk about 3 - 4 miles a day, do my yoga, and don't eat junk food (for the most part!). After that I'm not sure there's anything more you can do.

Also pretty happy I don't have to fork out on maternity clothes - my leggings and t-shirts are still going on, although a little snug!

Quitthat · 25/04/2020 11:29

I've put on WAY more than I hoped to...

First pregnancy I didn't gain much, but last time and this time I'm much heavier all round. I comfort myself with knowing I managed to lose it the previous times, though that was through lots of walking, which isn't going to happen with being locked down!

Not wanting to be discouraging, but I've continued to gain throughout 3rd trimester. I hoped I'd peaked in 2nd trimester, and like you I hoped to just gain a few more pounds over the final trimester, but I've gained pretty much 3 stone now Shock I'm assuming, as PP have said, that it's a lot of extra baby stuff (waters, placenta, baby...), as I'm not so so much bigger all over... but definitely chunkier! Also, boob weight needs to be factored in, as mine are already very heavy and much larger...

It's great, isn't it (sob sob)?! Gotta love pregnancy...

MichelleOR84 · 25/04/2020 11:44

I gained nothing from 28 weeks onwards, mostly because my job has me on my feet all day and my third trimester just happened to coincide with my busy season . I was walking 20kms a day according to my Apple watch . And being so pregnant , I felt full all the time and couldn’t keep up eating back all the calories I was burning . I must have been gaining baby weight but burning fat at the same rate .

I had gained 16 kilo in my first two trimesters though 😬🤷‍♀️ My midwife wasn’t concerned in the slightest and baby was growing perfectly.

By the way , when I came home from
The hospital I weighed myself and JUST by giving birth I somehow lost 9kilo !

XmasRibbons · 25/04/2020 12:01

@TTC2019xx I'm not entirely sure but I'd say I probably put on at least a stone by that point. Didn't start weighing myself regularly until the 30ish mark. I've not seen any stretch marks yet though fingers crossed not holding my breath...

With my first pregnancy nobody even knew I was really pregnant I only gained weight at about 27 weeks and that was minimal, fit in all my usual clothes aswell. This time has definitely been different!

Pentium85 · 25/04/2020 12:04

You do realise you have very little control over this? Some people just naturally put on lots of weight when pregnant. Sounds like you're developing an unhealthy obsession

LittleBoyJuly2020 · 25/04/2020 12:06

@Quitthat Omg you were walking 20kms a day??! Shock ...I'm walking an hour and 15 mins a day and starting to struggle a bit with just that! I'm in awe haha

LittleBoyJuly2020 · 25/04/2020 12:11

@Pentium85 It probably is a bit unhealthy to worry about weight when pregnant, I am definitely guilty of that. I spent most of my adult life dieting and trying to maibtain my weight (hypothyroid since a teenager) and it's taking it's toll on me this pregnancy because I am weighing myself everyday and worrying about the scale going up.

Not sure what can be done about it really though? I would never undereat when pregnant but that won't stop me worrying about it everyday.

CoffeeIsMyOnlyJoy · 25/04/2020 12:19

I started out at 69kg and ended up as 86kg. I had a very hungry nausea in the first trimester, and I packed the most on between 20-33ish weeks.

It just went. I remember losing about 4-5kg on returning from hospital, then about a kg every other day for a few days. After a month I was about 75kg, then by 4 months PP I was less than my pre-preg weight.

CoffeeIsMyOnlyJoy · 25/04/2020 12:23

Forgot to add, it may not feel like it but your body knows what it is doing. Eat when you are hungry, and eat nourishing foods. If you end up with a few extra lbs you will be able to sort it later, but it's likely you'll be pleasantly surprised.

XmasRibbons · 25/04/2020 13:44

I refused to have scales in my home for years, as i think it can be unhealthy. I got given some from a relative when I was in my first trimester as they won them in a raffle and didn't want them Grin

I try not to weigh myself too much. If you feel the need to weigh yourself everyday it may be best to remove them from your home. It does depress me a bit and stress me out but I know that my body is just accommodating baby, I've been extremely body conscious my entire adult life.

It can take it's toll on you especially when you're trying your best to be healthy and eat well and still pile on the pounds. But unfortunately for us ladies it's pretty much out of our control. I'm hoping it drops off afterwards like it did in my last pregnancy, breastfeeding seemed to really help me.

I'm trying to put all my energy into getting excited about baby at the moment, with the current covid situation regarding hospital services it's helped put my weight on the back burner to be honest.

Sorry to go on, just try and stay positive Grin

Pentium85 · 25/04/2020 14:52

@LittleBoyJuly2020

Honestly, I would be ditching the scales.

I am a comfortable size 10, size 8 prior to falling pregnant, and look perfectly 'normal' and yet I weigh 12st! I am quite sporty so definitely have more muscle, but if I weighed myself every day I'd have a heart attack, when actually I'm happy with how I look.

I appreciate it must be such a difficult thing to not do, especially if it's something you've done for a long period of time.

TTC2019xx · 25/04/2020 15:34

I’m guilty of weighing myself every morning and night as well. Isn’t healthy that’s for sure.

I’m just going to try and eat as healthy and possible and do a daily walk which I’ve been a bit lazy at doing the last couple of weeks!

OP posts:
LittleBoyJuly2020 · 25/04/2020 16:12

@Pentium85 I wish I could throw away the scales, but I think that would mess with my head even more.
I'm eating healthily and plenty, and have accepted the scale will keep creeping up... I'm 37 and have dieted since I was 18 so it's hard to put that mindset aside.

But as I said I would never undereat whilst pregnant and I'm enjoying eating lots of healthy and nutritious food that I know is doing baby lots of good.

I've been weighing myself every morning, making a note of it and quite intrigued to see how much I gain before birth and how much I lose afterwards.
I appreciate it's probably not healthy to be so preoccupied with weight. But for those of us who are, I think it's important to find a healthy balance and relationship with it whilst pregnant. So I'm glad this thread was started Smile

CrazyKitkatLady · 25/04/2020 21:59

I don’t keep scales in the house (it’s not healthy for me to have access every day!) but got weighed at my booking appointment (I was about 10 weeks I think) and weighed myself at a MW appointment last week (30 weeks) and have put on just over a stone.
The MW wasn’t interested at all but I was curious.

I don’t think it’s something you can control though, just try and eat as healthy as you can / feel able to and exercise as much as you feel able to to get strong for delivery (sadly not very much exercise at all for me compared to before I was pregnant!) you’re either predisposed to put on lots when pregnant or not so don’t beat yourself up!

CrazyKitkatLady · 25/04/2020 22:00

I’m the exact same shape my mum was when she was pregnant with me and I think that has a lot more to do with it than what I’m eating / exercising!
