What shall I buy for my baby to sleep in?

26 weeks pregnant, trying to get a list together of everything we need to buy - I've been far to superstitious to buy anything earlier and now with lockdown it's all having to be online and I think I'm getting overwhelmed with options.

We have chosen a travel system that comes with a carrycot. (The bundle/ deal we're looking at also includes a travel cot that says suitable from newborn but I'm not sure we'd use that for everyday).

I want one of the next to me/ bedside cot things too. I'm not sure which one yet - I was looking at one option that was reasonably priced but noticed it's only suitable up to 9kg baby weight. That's fine - I'm thinking that will take us up to 11/ 12 months by which time, if not before, we'd be looking at a cot bed and their own room I guess? It's this one babylo

Questions:

  • Is there any huge disadvantage to the bedside cribs I've failed to consider?
  • Do I need a Moses basket as well? I'm thinking something that the baby can sleep in downstairs? Or can I just use the carrycot from the pram? I'm reluctant to double up, particularly as we're short on space, but not sure if a carrycot is suitable/ comfortable for sleeping in in the day. Would I need an extra mattress?

I feel so clueless. Even the most seemingly straightforward decisions seem to come with a million questions I can't answer.

I never had a next to me cot so can't comment on that but I just slept DS in his pram when he was downstairs. You won't need an extra mattress, the carry cots are made to be comfortable

KnobwithaK · 24/04/2020 10:56

Following as I'm in the exact same position Smile

My understanding is that the carry cot from the pram is fine so long as it's supervised and not for overnight, so we'll probably use that in the living room in the day (interested if anyone says differently though). Also, I was looking at the snuzpod bedside crib - you can lift the top off the base and move it around fairly easily, plus it seemed to be the easiest to open/close the drop side when I tried the ones on display at the Excel "baby show" (they didn't have the one linked to in the OP). It's more expensive though.

We had a Chicco next to me bedside crib and it was brilliant, would recommend it. Ds had blankets, we didn't bother with sleeping bags until he became wriggly (he's 20 months old and we swear by them now!).

I doubt you'll be using the bedside crib for quite as long as u think though - ds outgrew his by 6 months and he was long-ish I suppose but not a particularly massive baby.

We didn't bother with a Moses basket and he has a cot in his room which he sleeps in now really well.

When he was a newborn he had almost all his daytime sleep in my arms and napped on me pretty regularly until 10 months when he became too heavy.

You'll find something that works for you - probably completely different to what we did / do Smilegood luck.

DD2 hated the Moses basket so in desperation we bough the Chicco next to me crib - DD was in it until she was 14 weeks at which point she went into her own room (😱 shock horror) she liked the next to me crib and she settled better in there than she had in the Moses basket.

She slept on a baby bean bag downstairs, she absolutely loved that, she was comfy cozy on it!

MrsBtobe1208 · 24/04/2020 11:04

I've always had a Moses basket and a cot for my two. Moses basket for the living room & bedroom until they outgrow it. Then cot after that :) obviously doesn't always work for everyone though. I wouldn't use the sleepyheads etc though x

fedupandlookingforchange · 24/04/2020 11:05

I used the pram downstairs and a moses basket upstairs. It was only a cheap supermarket moses basket but he slept in it until he was 7 months.
My pram can be used for overnight.
Thankfully I was given a cot as he's never slept in it.
I wouldn't buy too much before the baby is born because you don't know what they will like and you can most things next day delivery.

BeeyatchPlease · 24/04/2020 11:06

We had a Moses basket downstairs for DS but he outgrew it by not even 6 weeks so I thought that was a total waste of money! After that, I put him in his pram to sleep during the day and he was perfectly content in that.
For night time, we had a snuzpud by our bed but we didn't collapse the side to put it right against the bed, just kept it as a crib. You can rock it too which was great for DS, really settled him. He was in there until 6 months when he outgrew it and then went into his cot in his own room.

Thank you everyone - good to hear some experiences.

fedup I'm definitely getting the sense that whatever we buy the baby will probably choose something completely different! We've just been offered a Moses basket that DH's colleague's baby absolutely refused to be in. He wants paying almost as much as buying new for it though, hence why I was trying to work out if we'd even need one.

Re the Moses basket - the advice is to buy a new mattress even if you get the basket second hand, so factor that into the cost too..

erised · 24/04/2020 11:20

FTM here too. Had this dilemma a few weeks ago, I read up on the Chicco next 2 me cribs and didn't really see any negatives towards it so my parents bought a new one with slight cosmetic defects (only a couple of marks from storage) from Amazon that was half the price. Really looking forward to using it! Seems like the best option.

As for when we're downstairs I'm going to use the carry cot part of our travel system or and Sleepyhead (going to find a cheaper alternative though) so baby can have naps next to me on the sofa. We also have a small seat she can nap in. Not bothering with a moses basket as babies don't stay in them for long, seems like a waste of money to me.

babynamesarehard · 24/04/2020 11:21

We had a Moses basket, sleepyhead, Carey cost from pram, next to me crib and cot.... and baby only slept on me 😂😂

00100001 · 24/04/2020 11:22

we useda moses basket for about 6 weeks by the bed, until we decided what kind of 'long term' sleeping equimonet to get.

got a next-to-me crib, and moses basket used downstairs for naps untoila bout 4 months - after that DS was in travel cot downstairs

fedupandlookingforchange · 24/04/2020 11:24

Thats rather a lot, I bought mini in morrisons for £22 !
I had a c section last time and will be having one this time and I couldn't have got out of bed with a next to me crib.

BakewellGin1 · 24/04/2020 11:28

We had a Next to Me and loved it so much better then Moses Basket we had previously for older DS.

Downstairs and supervised we had a bouncer, baby beanbag, padded playmat which DS loved to curl up and snooze on and pram

20viona · 24/04/2020 11:30

Snuzpod upstairs and a purflo nest downstairs either on carpet or on the sofa if in the room. Also had a swing which you can lie horizontal which was excellent. No need for Moses basket at all.

Darkstar4855 · 24/04/2020 11:34

I had a tutti bambini and loved it, made a great travel cot in the early days too as it folds flat into its own carry bag.

Mine grew out of it at six months and went into a cot bed in his own room, he was a >75th centile chunk though so a smaller baby might last a bit longer. Tbh we both slept better after he moved though!

Chester6 · 24/04/2020 11:35

I am 33 weeks so haven't used our bits yet but we have a chicco next to me for the bedroom which seems highly recommended...but I bought one on Facebook marketplace second hand in good condition and just bought a brand new mattress for it. I did the same for a baby bath etc. We have a Moses basket for downstairs but when she outgrows it we'll probably use our Uppababy Vista pram as it has vents and can be slept in overnight.

loubert89 · 24/04/2020 11:43

FTM too, I'm currently 27 weeks so not much ahead of you.

We have purchased a Chicco Next2Me crib for the bedroom and I plan to use the carry cot from the pram in the bedroom for daytime naps. I have no intention of buying a Moses basket unless he doesn't get on with the crib.

MonicaGellerHyphenBing · 24/04/2020 11:48

A lot of pram carrycots are certified for overnight sleeping, I know mine is, so if yours is you can absolutely use that for naps and see how you go. I never had a Moses basket, didn’t see the point when so many babies outgrow them well before 6 months.

For overnight sleeping we had a Snuzpod which I really liked. As a poster up thread mentioned the top part does detach, however it’s heavy and bulky so we never did this. My DD was a fairly petite baby so didn’t grow out of the Snuzpod too quickly, however she was an early crawler and was able to pull herself over the sides so it wasn’t safe for her to be in it past 6 months, I doubt you’d get anywhere close to 12 months use out of a co-sleeper cot.

Raaaa · 24/04/2020 11:50

We had a family Moses basket that had gone through the generation and we just bought a new mattress from mothercare. It was on a stand so at night it was in the room with us and when we were downstairs we could lift it off the stand and put it in the sofa/floor of living room. She would also sleep in the pram/car seat if she fell asleep in them.
She grew out of it quite quickly and then moved into a cotbed in her room which had different levels on it to rise and drop the mattress.
Good luck!

GirlCalledJames · 24/04/2020 11:58

Everyone I know has ended up cosleeping as their babies wouldn’t sleep alone (however, they all bf, which make a difference). We had a next to me crib but it didn’t make any difference, somehow the baby could tell the difference between being put down in the bed and put down a few centimetres to the right. With the second baby I didn’t even bother getting the cot out until he was 8 months old. We used a Sleepyhead to put him on during the day.
If you possibly can know it in advance try and evaluate how likely you are to put the baby in the bed with you. If you think you are likely to do that, bear it in mind when choosing a cot.

AlphaIndigo · 24/04/2020 12:02

We had our daughter in the next to me crib in our bedroom from birth and used the carrycot in the daytime downstairs.
At 6 months we moved her into her full size cot in her room, sold the next to me crib and she had outgrown her carrycot by 4 months.
We bought a Joie travel cot which is similar to the next to me crib for daytime naps downstairs and visiting family/travelling.
If I had known now how things would go, I would probably have just used the Joie kubbie travel cot from birth in the bedroom and not bought the next to me as well. Would've saved money and space!

TeaAndBiscuits666 · 24/04/2020 14:24

We decided not to get a next-to-me or similar I was worried the dog might try to climb into it.

We've got a swinging crib (mammas & pappas) for upstairs in our room.

Downstairs we've got a carry-cot. It is from a pram set, but has a stand so takes up less space than when it's on wheels.

We also have a cot bed ready for when baby is big enough to sit up.

onlinelinda · 24/04/2020 23:55

If I had children again I would buy a next to me-hands down.

Caspianberg · 25/04/2020 05:54

We have gone straight for a full size cot in our bedroom at the bottom of the bed.

Decided against a co sleeper as many friends said it was a pain getting in and out of bed, and awkward having no bedside table if they moved it higher up.

Our carrycot is certified for overnight sleeping if we need it.
