What shall I buy for my baby to sleep in?

26 weeks pregnant, trying to get a list together of everything we need to buy - I've been far to superstitious to buy anything earlier and now with lockdown it's all having to be online and I think I'm getting overwhelmed with options.

We have chosen a travel system that comes with a carrycot. (The bundle/ deal we're looking at also includes a travel cot that says suitable from newborn but I'm not sure we'd use that for everyday).

I want one of the next to me/ bedside cot things too. I'm not sure which one yet - I was looking at one option that was reasonably priced but noticed it's only suitable up to 9kg baby weight. That's fine - I'm thinking that will take us up to 11/ 12 months by which time, if not before, we'd be looking at a cot bed and their own room I guess? It's this one babylo

Questions:

  • Is there any huge disadvantage to the bedside cribs I've failed to consider?
  • Do I need a Moses basket as well? I'm thinking something that the baby can sleep in downstairs? Or can I just use the carrycot from the pram? I'm reluctant to double up, particularly as we're short on space, but not sure if a carrycot is suitable/ comfortable for sleeping in in the day. Would I need an extra mattress?

I feel so clueless. Even the most seemingly straightforward decisions seem to come with a million questions I can't answer.

We had a next to me upstairs - I loved it and would definitely use it again (ours was borrowed but would happily buy new!). I moved him to his cot at 6 months because my friend needed it back for her next baby, but by then he was really getting too wriggly and big for it anyway.

In the day he slept in the pram carrycot, up on a large coffee table next to the window (was jaundiced early on). Although he did sleep on me a lot too, of course! He started doing naps upstairs in the cot at around 5 months, when he slept less deeply.

We used blankets tucked in very tightly at his waist when he was tiny, then sleeping bags when he got bigger and I wasn't worried about his head getting covered by them. He hated swaddling.

Hi OP. My baby is 4 weeks old so we are living this issue at the moment!
We have a bedside crib and I llanned to use theboram carrycot for downstairs naps however just before baby was born I saw a moses basket and stand for £15 in Aldi. They really don't need to be expensive. Baby was smaller than we expected so she loves her moses basket and soon we will try and move to the bedside crib at night. This is a useful thread as I was wondering what to do re downstairs naps but will probably use pram until she is happy in own room. Congratulations and good luck!

Don't bother with a moses basket OP, especially not if you have a carry cot.

With my first, he outgrew the carry cot by 8 weeks old and the Moses basket by 11 weeks. He was a big baby! We then had to put him in his own room because we already had the cot bed, but didn't have room for it in our bedroom. He would only ever nap on me or in the pram (the seat lay flat), so didn't really need any anything for downstairs!

We got a next to me for my youngest. I never used it as a co-sleeper. It was the biggest crib that we could fit in our bedroom. We kept the carry cot and he napped downstairs in it until about six weeks. By then he was more alert in the day and was impossible to get him to sleep in the same room with his toddler brother. So we just started putting him in the next to me for his daytime naps as well. As I said, I never had the side down on it. We used it for him longer than six months, but he was late to move himself.

With the next to me, you can adjust the height and angle, which is great for reflux (which both of mine had!). We sold ours on as well.

We had a snuzpod for overnight which was amazing - DD was in it til she was 8 months old and I didn't have to get out of bed for night feeds for that entire time!
We had a travel system too with a bassinet approved for overnight sleeping and that's where she slept downstairs, when not on me! She also quite liked a nap in her bouncer (always supervised)

TKAAHUARTG · 25/04/2020 06:55

I got a carry cot, a wooden rocking crib, a Moses basket and a regular cot. The baby never went in any of them and slept in my bed from day one.

We had a Moses basket (for downstairs) , Next to me & pram carrycot. Baby hated Moses basket, & would only nap either on me or on a Joie Swing we had to buy, which was a lifesaver, as I was not able to put him down in anything else without him crying. I would recommend a next to me or something similar for nighttime. The pram carrycot will be fine for during the day, as you will probably fine baby will want to be on you most of the time!

I got a chicco next to me for DS after having a simple crib for DD. Best choice I ever made. Although I didn't realise the weight limit was 9kg, hes definitely over that now, will have to sort that out. I didn't bother with moses basket with either because I make giant babies, they wouldn't have fit in there as a newborn

Ohhgreat · 25/04/2020 07:06

On the weight limit - 9kg tends to be about the 6 month point, if not earlier.
I had a csection and a next 2 me, not an issue.

Treaclepie19 · 25/04/2020 07:08

We loved our next to me and ill be getting one again. Just be aware though that its not just down to size and weight of baby, if they can sit up they're not supposed to be in it anymore. So our little boy lasted 5 months in his because of both weight and safety.

NatalieH2220 · 25/04/2020 07:42

We had a Chicco next to me and I'd highly
recommend. We used this from day 1 and never bothered with a Moses basket. This lasted until 6 months then he went into his cot in his own room.

For downstairs we had a tiny love rocker napper which lasted a similar amount of time and also converted into a rocker for when he was awake.

I'm planning to buy both again second tome around as they worked so well.

Following this.
It’s difficult isn’t it as we can’t look round shops and have to get it all online. I haven’t bought anything yet. Wondering whether to get something like a next to me or if I should get something like a travel cot which you can raise mattress levels as I’d be able to use it for holidays as well but worried, are they safe? Would you buy a mattress to go in it to make it safer/comfier? Is there some travel cots you can use for them sleeping in regularly rather than just occasional? I’ve emailed a company that said it’s fine and safe to use their one until baby goes in a cot but then I read other reviews of travel cots that say they are unsafe for regular use. Why is this?

beautifulmonument · 25/04/2020 08:30

I didn't have a Moses basket for either of my babies. Co-sleeper cots upstairs and when downstairs DS1 napped in a travel cot and DS2 napped in the pram (second hand bugaboo cameleon which has a flat bed)

happymummy12345 · 02/05/2020 11:35

We had a normal swinging crib to start, then a cot. Both in our room. We knew we wanted to keep dc in our room as long as possible. We had room for the cot anyway, and if we didn't we'd have moved furniture out so the cot would fit in.
Personally I never saw the point or need for a baby to sleep downstairs during the day, so we never did it. He always slept upstairs. So never needed anything for sleeping downstairs. Plus I hate Moses baskets and would never ever put my baby in one.

BeMorePacific · 02/05/2020 11:40

We had a Moses basket, and just carried it downstairs everyday and night as it was pretty light. Xx

allinit2gether · 03/05/2020 20:32

I'm 30 weeks and have bought a Moses basket with stand for downstairs and a tutti bambini cozee air for next to the bed in my room. I'll get a cot later.

Maybelatte · 03/05/2020 20:42

My DC all hated the Moses basket so it was a total waste of money. My youngest slept in the sleepyhead between us in the bed tbh and it worked really well, he’s 18 months now and sleeps in the bigger sleepyhead in his cot.

I’m pregnant again so will be using the sleepyhead again but have been eyeing up a snuzpod. They’re extremely expensive though so a risky purchase if baby doesn’t like it. I just want somewhere for the baby to sleep safely downstairs now we have a toddler tearing around!

Sb131216 · 03/05/2020 21:07

My dd hated the moses basket and swinging crib. She only slept on us or when we moved her into a cot around 6 weeks.

We have a cot under our bed ready to assemble this time in our room but looking into a 2nd hand snuzpod or equivalent but I have a while so doing more research first

Sb131216 · 03/05/2020 21:09

Another point to consider is that moses baskets new or 2nd hand can be pretty cheap if you end up needing it when baby is here and easy to sell but not for much, a bedside crib usually has a pretty decent money back if baby hates it and you want to sell on

Emmy2020 · 21/05/2020 09:49

I’ve been given a Moses Basket that I’ll use for downstairs and my mum has bought me a next to me magic crib which looks really good, not seen it yet as it’s at her house but like that you can have it next to the bed, it can be rocked and will last longer than a Moses basket.
