Eggs 11 days out of date - can I eat?

I have some eggs in the fridge that are 11 days past their best before date. I've done the water test and they've all sunk to the bottom. I was hoping to hard-boil them to make egg mayo sandwiches for lunch, and would normally eat them without any worries. However, I'm 36 weeks pregnant so am a lot more cautious than usual!

Would you eat them or get rid?

I expect they’re ok as eggs usually last long past their sell by date. They will probably also smell terrible if they have gone bad! But I totally understand you wanting to be cautious, so don’t have them if it will make you worry.

Mumsnut · 15/04/2020 11:05

Were they in the fridge? Cos the bbf date is premised on them bring on the counter. So they could have a chance

RedSoloCup · 15/04/2020 11:05

Put them in a bowl of water if they float no if they sink they are fine (I find generally okay if they bob up a bit but not fully float)

Yes, they were in the fridge...

Would be keen to avoid food poison due to pregnancy and coronavirus.

In normal circumstances, maybe.

OneHanded · 15/04/2020 11:08

I’d go for it they’ve been in the fridge and you’re going to boil them fully anyway.

robin2 · 15/04/2020 11:29

Thanks all. I hate throwing food away but don't think I can risk eating them when I'm pregnant. I know I'll be worrying if I do!

I'd say yes but not when pregnant just in case!

NoMorePoliticsPlease · 15/04/2020 11:33

Never mind floating. Take an egg, crack it in a cup. You will know if its off VER EASILY. When you crack a very fresh egg on to a plate the white is very thick and firm, it starts to get thinner with age but still edible. A bad egg will be greay green and clear the kitchen with its stink

UnrulySalvia · 15/04/2020 11:36

In normal circumstances - yes. With pregnancy and covid19 in the mix - no.

Lilice · 15/04/2020 11:40

I wouldn't. I once ate out of date eggs by accident and it wasn't pretty...

Delbelleber · 15/04/2020 11:40

If they sink to the bottom then I don't see a problem with eating them

REdReDRE · 15/04/2020 11:41

Yes I would. I never check the dates in eggs - you can soon tell if they're off!

Oooooooooooooooo · 15/04/2020 11:54

Put them in a bowl of water

dialmformmmm · 15/04/2020 12:16

Is that you, Edwina?

Enough4me · 15/04/2020 12:21

I wouldn't risk it in pregnancy.

EastMidsMumOf1 · 15/04/2020 14:29

Honestly, eggs have a very long shelf life compared to alot of things. Pregnant or not I wouldn't worry and it's not a use by date, only best before.

IslayBrigid · 15/04/2020 17:17

I would not! Esp as when pregnant you are more likely to get food poisoning.

And also a rotten egg is the grossest thing

Chanel05 · 15/04/2020 17:30

I wouldn't.

Wheresthebiffer2 · 15/04/2020 17:33

I wouldn't. A few days yes, but not nearly a fortnight stale. eeew.

Comefromaway · 15/04/2020 17:36

I’ve never taken any notice of dates on eggs and I’m paranoid about other foods.

Believe me, you will know a rotten egg.

Carrie7469 · 15/04/2020 17:37

Throw them away

safariboot · 15/04/2020 17:41

Since you plan to hard-boil them I wouldn't worry. The float test indicates they're still fresh.

I might think twice about raw or softboiled, but properly cooked is fine.

Nelliana · 15/04/2020 17:45

Float them. If they float don't eat. If they sink then eat them. They don't come out of the hen with a date stamp on them do they.
