First trimester tea and coffee aversion

Has anyone else experienced this!? I was such a coffee fiend and used to have lots, along with several cups of tea a day. I’m now 9 weeks pregnant and cannot even stand the thought of it. Making my husband a cup makes me gag!
I know this is probably a good thing due to caffeine being potentially problematic in pregnancy but wondered if anyone has experienced similar and their taste for it eventually returned?! And if so, when?

Does anyone else have any real aversions? I’m also gagged by avocado, spicy food and eggs-again all things I used to love!! 🤢 🤢 🤢

Me. I have completely gone off coffee. Just the thought of my usual flat white or frothy coffee puts me off. I’m still managing tea though, but find it tastes different. I was nauseous up until 8 weeks and now that’s all disappeared Confused im 8+4

Soubriquet · 14/04/2020 15:18

I couldn’t drink any tea with both of my pregnancies.

The thought made me feel sick. Even decaf tea made me ill. It never came back whilst pregnant but only once I’d given birth

That first cup after labour...now that was bliss!!!

MoltoAgitato · 14/04/2020 15:19

Went off coffee before I’d even had a positive pregnancy test, sorry! Came back within a couple of days post partum though.

lumpydaisy · 14/04/2020 15:19

I didn't know I was pregnant until 9 weeks, but in the weeks leading up to actually taking the test I went right off coffee. I started taking longer and longer to drink my morning cup, then started leaving it halfway through, then just stopped bothering entirely. Then I found out I was pregnant and it kind of made sense.

I'm now 17+4 and still have no desire for coffee, and still not very keen on the smell when my husband makes himself one. But I am now enjoying coffee flavoured ice cream!

TheOrigBrave · 14/04/2020 15:21

Absolutely - I went right off tea (wasn't a big coffee drinker anyway). It was odd because I didn't want it (aversion), but I was sad because I really, really love my cuppa in the morning.

It did come back, but I'd say it wasn't until after birth that I truly got the 'ooooh I'd love a cuppa' feeling. Same for broccoli. Opening the cupboards with the spices in made me reel.

In my small anecdotal experience I think it's more common to have aversions than cravings.

Pucialace · 14/04/2020 15:23

I'm approx 6 weeks and exactly the same - cannot even bare to make one as the smell will make me gag. Problem is I'm tired, but I know the coffee would give me a boost to do housework but can't face it. I would usually have about 4 cups a day, I've been having 1 tea a day instead but can't bare it to be as milky as I would have previously. Early days for me and no change to food yet x

AliasGrape · 14/04/2020 15:23

I’ve never drunk coffee anyway but was a total tea addict. I went right off it for ages - I’m 24+5 now and in the last 3 weeks or so have gone back to drinking a morning cup of tea - decaf. It doesn’t taste ‘right’ still but I still quite like that morning one, I don’t drink any more though whereas previously I drank it throughout the day. I’ve switched to mint tea or ginger tea but it’s not the same!

BlingLoving · 14/04/2020 15:25

Yup, I don't drink a lot of coffee but am addicted to that one morning flat white and with both pregnancies just went right off it quite early. Weirdly, I still FELT like coffee, but just thinking about it was awful and I couldn't even take the smell. It went away completely at about the 11 week mark, but most people I know who experienced similar seemed to stay off coffee for much longer. I had similar with wine - I'd feel like a glass and might even have a very small glass but usually, about half way through, it would start to become completely unpalatable. Which did make not drinking too much in pregnancy easier! Grin

The one I found weirdest is that at time of first pregnancy I was eating very little red meat and very little dairy but after I got pregnant I couldn't get enough yoghurt and iron-rich foods (including in the form of spinach which I ate daily for weeks pretty much) in first trimester. It was odd. With second DC, I was eating a more varied diet when I got pregnant and the crazy protein/iron /dairy cravings were absent. Having said that, I was diagnosed as slightly anaemic in second pregnancy so perhaps more of that craving would have been helpful!!

N12345625 · 14/04/2020 15:25

I was like that with my first pregnancy. I started to enjoy tea again at around 16 weeks pregnant.I also hated chicken, when prior to pregnancy I loved it!
I am currently 10 weeks pregnant with my second and still love tea and coffee... Annoying as it is making me worry that I have had a missed miscarriage!!

Chanel05 · 14/04/2020 15:25

I've always been a huge tea lover and I went off tea straight away. I'm 18 weeks now and though I'm not repulsed by it, I really have no desire to drink it.

BlingLoving · 14/04/2020 15:26

Oh, and yes, the barista at the coffee shop in our office building was definitely the first person to figure out I was pregnant! After about a week of me ordering tea he gave me a smirk and was completely unsurprised when it was all more obvious later! Grin

AliasGrape · 14/04/2020 15:28

As for other aversions, I can’t stand to even look at smoked salmon now whereas previously it was a firm favourite. I ate it up till about 8 weeks pregnant and then DH made me a lovely breakfast including the salmon and I just thought ‘not a chance’,

I’ve gone funny about eggs too.

edgeware · 14/04/2020 15:30

My mum realised she was pregnant with my sister when her pregnant friend mentioned she couldn’t stomach coffee at the moment. Mum then thought ‘wait a minute, I can’t either...’

11 weeks and I am off most things 🤢 tea and coffee ok in very small quantities if very milky (not a milk fan but I find it settles the nausea)

coffeandcake30 · 14/04/2020 15:31

Omg yeah I had this, j was really upset that I thought I'd never enjoy a cup of coffee again ha! Then probably by 20 weeks I liked it again, and struggled to limit myself to 1 a day!

liquoricecravings · 14/04/2020 15:31

I love a cup of tea in the evening but have really gone off of it since becoming pregnant. I have peppermint tea or hot chocolate if I want a hot drink.

Historyofeverything1 · 14/04/2020 15:39

I went off tea with both pregnancies couldn't even stand the smell. However it was the first thing I wanted after giving birth and it tasted brilliant.

Amymone · 14/04/2020 15:41

OMG yes. I am a total hot drinks fiend. Love all of them and have about 8 cups a day, especially herbal, but not anymore. The joy of my morning coffee is no longer! I've also only ever really liked hot food but have now completely gone off it. Instead I want cold, crunchy foods like veggies. So weird for me. Pasta and carbs I never thought I'd get enough of, but now the thought of pasta or crackers makes me really queasy!

Fivefourthree · 14/04/2020 15:44

Me too! I was sick a lot and felt sick ALL the time. My sense of smell was so strong that I could even smell the chlorine in bathwater Envy

SparkyBlue · 14/04/2020 15:49

It's always one of the first giveaways that someone is pregnant 😀😀😀. I am a tea addict and I just couldn't bear it. It's awful to not even be able to enjoy a cup of tea

BabyMoonPie · 14/04/2020 15:51

I struggled with instant coffee but could drink a latte from a coffee shop. Most drinks were vile to me apart from ginger beer and hot chocolate (made with full fat milk as Iow fat left an aftertaste in my mouth)

triedandtestedteacher · 14/04/2020 15:52

How about an aversion to everything? I'm struggling so bad racking my brain for something I could stomach but everything makes me want to retch.

GetTheSprinkles · 14/04/2020 15:56

Yep, happened to me! Had a cup of tea about 2 hours after delivery and it was bliss

Wewearpinkonwednesdays · 14/04/2020 15:56

Yup, with my second pregnancy I was a coffee addict. Couldn't drink it for the whole pregnancy. Couldn't wait to give birth to have a good coffee.
First pregnancy was slightly different in that I had been quite a heavy drinker and smoked a lot. Luckily I went right off both of those things too 😂

MarshmallowsOnToast · 14/04/2020 15:56

I was the same in first trimester.

The smell of coffee made me actually sick. The thought of it was enough to make me feel green.

Went off curry too.

I'm 36 weeks now & still don't drink coffee. It doesn't make me feel ill anymore but just not got the fancying for it back.

MyBabyBoyBlue · 14/04/2020 16:00

I totally went off coffee (which was shocking for me as I pretty much live on the stuff!). Even the smell made me throw up - for the whole pregnancy! Two days after I gave birth, I was drinking coffee again (decaf because I was breastfeeding) and I'm happy to report that two years on my addiction is stronger than ever!
