Tall parents... big baby?

Hello! I need some help, pregnant with my first, I’m 5ft10 and dad is 6ft3

I’m trying to work out how many of each size baby grows to get. I don’t want to go mad on newborn and 0-1 month if I’m going to have a baby that will be too big for them!

I wonder if there’s any tall girls out there who have had a baby already and offer some experience?

Thanks 😊 I’ll probably just end up buying cheaper small stuff in the end x

I am 6ft and DH 6ft3

Our first baby was normal sized at 7 pounds and a bit long but not big, very fine features and tiny feet

Second boy was 10.5 pounds, huge hands and feet, large head... a big whopper

There is no way of knowing Grin

Never used 0-3 months on either of them, started with 3-6 months

PippaPegg · 02/04/2020 22:12

OH is 6'4. Both DC have been long. Straight into 0-3. Then into 3-6 by 2 months old. 6-9 at 4 months. And so on. DC1 was 2 weeks before due date and still just as long as DC2 who was 2 weeks over due date.

Put it this way you are better off having more in the bigger sizes than the smaller since babies only get bigger as time goes on!

You can always order more for delivery if baby is unexpectedly small.

MissTheodore · 02/04/2020 22:24

My baby was long and 9lb3. She wore 1 month babygros; newborn would have been way too small. The 1 month suits lasted about 2-3 weeks, then she was 0-3 month suits until 2 months.

Northernsoullover · 02/04/2020 22:27

We are the same height as you. First baby 8lb second baby 7.3. Neither was overly tall but now my 16 year old is 6ft.

Nonagoninfinity · 02/04/2020 22:32

I'm 5'8, DH is 6'3. Our daughter was 9lb 7 and on 99th centile for height so went straight into 0 - 3 months. She's now 13 and I think about 5'7.

Delbelleber · 02/04/2020 22:35

I'm 5'9 first babies dad was over 6ft. Baby was the longest on the ward and his little knees poked through the button gap on his baby grow. Had to get bigger clothes brought in for him to wear Grin

grangeranger · 02/04/2020 22:39

I'm 5'11 and DS was 10lbs10 and >99th percentile on all his measurements. He's just turned 1 and is wearing 2-3 year old clothes. He was in all of those gorgeous 0-3 that I got for about 10 days Sad

Sevo7 · 02/04/2020 22:43

There’s no way to be sure. I’m 5’9 and my first baby’s dad was 6ft 1. First baby 9lb 10oz very long with a large head and went straight into 0-3 as newborn was too tight. Was in 3-6 months before 12 weeks old.

2nd baby different father but also around 6ft 1 was 7lb 10oz at 42 weeks and she’s very petite. She has very long legs which meant I needed to go up a size before the rest of her was ready but she stayed in newborn size clothes until nearly 3 months old and they swamped her as a newborn as she was so tiny.

csmw · 02/04/2020 22:50

I'm 6' 1 and DH is 6'4
DD1 was 9lb 3 and long
DD2 is currently still inside growth scan today put her legs on 98th percentile and approx 9lb 5 so I'm being induced on Tuesday x

DowntonCrabby · 02/04/2020 22:51

We’re 5’9” and 6’2” and had big long babies! A 9lb 9oz DD and an 11lb DS, both on the 90-99th centile for length at birth.

Neither could use newborn clothes so went straight into 0-3m.

Nelly325 · 02/04/2020 22:52

I'm 5'10,husband 5'11. Our son was 9lb and in 0-3 months straight away, grew out of them within a month or so! Now 14 months he's in 18 month /24 month clothes

Susanna85 · 02/04/2020 22:55

I am average but DH is 6ft5. My newborn wasn't big, 7lb4. But long!
My older child has always been tallest in the class and looks about a year or so older than classmates. Long baby as well.

Amrythings · 02/04/2020 23:07

Mine was 8.15 and long all over - we had 0-3 and 1-3 for him but because he's got such long feet he was getting squashed (and angry) in the toes long before he outgrew the rest. His dad cut the feet off the first lot and I've mostly been buying the H&M 3 sets of footless pajamas and putting socks on him since

M&S babygros are quite good if you get one that's long in the back as well as the legs.

Amanduh · 02/04/2020 23:09

I’m 5’10 and husband 6’2. Baby was 7lb 14oz at 2 weeks overdue but teeny (I think his weight was all in his big head) and we had to go and buy small baby clothes as newborn were too big!

SnoozyLou · 02/04/2020 23:35

I'm 5' 4" and DS was 10lb 5. My partner is just shy of 6'.

DP was a tiny baby. I was nearly 10lb, as was my brother. My mum was just under 9. Our daughter is measuring above average and we're at 28 weeks now. I'm by no means tall - I just think big babies runs in some families.

SnoozyLou · 02/04/2020 23:35

DS didn't get in newborns btw. We went straight to 0-3.

yestonodressyet · 02/04/2020 23:39

You can always wash a pack of newborn so you have them ready and if you buy extra just don't unpack it yet and keep the receipt and change for a size up if you find baby is too long

GrumpyHoonMain · 02/04/2020 23:43

Honestly just buy one pack in 0-3 months and see how it goes. I did that, realised the 9 pounder I was expecting was actually a tall 7 pounder, and then bought some a pack in newborn size which lasted a month.

GrumpyHoonMain · 02/04/2020 23:46

I would agree with this. I come from a family of tall people and newborn babies were always approx 5-7 pounds. DH comes from a short family where babies are in the 8-12 pound mark. I don’t think a baby (or a toddler’s size) is necessarily a sign of height - if it were my DH’s family would all be 7 footers instead of 5 footers!

Wolfgirrl · 02/04/2020 23:46

I'm 5'9 and DP is 5'7, he was a 5lb baby at term and I was over 9lb! DD was born at 36 weeks and was 6lb5oz which I think was around the 50th centile for her gestation. I think generally taller couples have longer babies but you can never tell, I would buy a couple of 'tiny baby' babygrows just in case as baby sizes come up quite big IMO. My DD wore tiny baby until she was about 7/8lb then moved into newborn.

RandomMess · 03/04/2020 08:00

Having had 4 DC baby gowns and pjs are actually far quicker for nappy changes etc.

maa1992 · 03/04/2020 08:04

I'd buy a couple of newborn and 0-3

I bought both and brought them the hospital, good job I did because baby was 10lb 1oz and DH had to run out to buy more 0-3 lol

And neither of us are tall, I'm 5'5 and DH is 5'8 we just grew a big healthy boy lol

Good luck x

Rosehip345 · 03/04/2020 08:09

You can’t really tell. My tall parents ended up with tiny little me and my brothers who apart from one are quite small.

My husband is 6ft7 and I’m 5ft2, ridiculous I know! Our kids are all tall, one was in tiny baby as prem, the next fit in newborn just and the others went straight to 3months. All due to length

myidentitymycrisis · 03/04/2020 08:22

I’m 5’7 DP 6’5 mine dc was 8lb and long too. Just get 0 -3 mths, I didn’t have any newborn ones, not sure they even existed to be fair

Hodge85 · 03/04/2020 08:45

Hi,

I'm at 5'10 and hubby is 6'5" and I've been agonising over what to buy little one. Have you found that your baby has been long regardless of weight? I'm looking at footless onesies just to make surr he'll fit. On scans he looks like he has long legs and he's now upper centile for his leg length too! We have a growth scan on Tuesday due to me having my thyroid removed last year so I'll get to see how he's doing Smile
