How much clothing for a newborn?

Hi all, I am 32 weeks so have a little while yet but as we're all at home a lot more right now I've started to get all of my bits ready for baby's arrival. How much clothing in newborn size would you recommend mummies? I have tonnes of 3-6 months size as we've been kindly gifted these. However, I don't have a huge amount of newborn and 0-3 months just yet, but before I order some more I'd like to know how much baby will need. I currently have 3 plain white vests, 3 plain white sleep suits and 6 patterned grows. I know I need more. How much?

Would also love to know peoples thoughts on this.

I was very practical, and got 10 of each. 10 vests with poppers, 10 baby pyjamas (all in one) for night time, 10 pairs of soft leggings, 10 pairs of socks. You'll need a couple of cardigans for newborn - easier to put on than jumpers.i also bought some scratch mittens (but didn't use more than 3 pairs) and a couple of baby hats - although your baby will come in summer, so you probably won't need any!
You always need 2 of each (vest, leggings) when you go out - just in case they need changing.
I know people who buy lids more, but I found there really was no need for more clothes. That way once a week washing is enough. But you might want to do it twice.
The rest...... people will probably gift you loads as gifts anyway!!
And you'll find what works for you once the little one is here. Some mummies change their babies a couple of times a day, I rarely did - we stayed in the same clothes all day, unless she made a mess or had an accident that is....

My baby is 12 days old and weighed 6lb 11oz at birth. 0-3 months would swamp her so she is in newborn clothes and even then some are too big for her.
I would say I probably get through 3-4 outfit changes a day. I change her in the morning to a fresh vest and baby grow and the rest are changes due to poonamis, getting cover is breast milk when feeding and spit up. I am doing a wash a day to keep on top of everything and make sure I always have a fresh supply.
I think I probably have about 10 vest and 10 baby grows in newborn size and that is plenty for us but then it depends how often you want to be washing clothes.

Thank you @Bobsandbitz @WillWinterEverEnd

The vest goes under the baby from right? And all vests have poppers to fasten in between legs?
I’m 30 weeks and clueless before nct!

Sweetpea1989 · 30/03/2020 08:18

Baby gro*

firsttimeivfmum · 30/03/2020 09:02

Correct @Sweetpea1989! I don't know the difference between baby grow and sleep suit until NCT either!

Depends when your baby is due. If we're still in lockdown or the weather is really warm you won't need nearly so much.

My babies were prem so we had to go out and buy a load of tiny baby clothes - they weren't in the newborn size until they were about six months. I really wouldn't buy too much in advance of the birth. Buy the basic and then just wait and see what you need.

ps1991 · 30/03/2020 09:11

There isn’t a difference between a baby grow and a sleep suit. Baby will sleep in the same clothes they wear for the day time, obviously you will change them but they won’t need pjs as we use them. Get about 10 long sleeved and 10 short sleeve vests and about 10 all in ones. Baby needs a vest and then an all in one on. They need an extra layer to what you’re wearing. You’ll probably need a light pram suit for outings and hats for when you go outdoors. Remember if you need baby clothes they can be bought very easily and quickly so don’t buy too many. You’ll have to do a lot of changes in the first few days as baby might be sick a lot to clear out the fluid from being in the womb.

For bedtimes we used grosnugs, and then moved onto grow bags :)

I’ve got a 4 week old who is just moving into 0-3 month clothes; I’d say minimum 14 vests and 14 babygrows as he can go through 3 outfits in a day.

KHall84 · 30/03/2020 09:42

It totally depends I have 15 of each size newborn, put to 1month and then 0-3 this is for both vests and sleep suits and outfits I have a lot more but this is because I dont like to have my baby in a babygrow of a day and prefer them to be in a proper outfit/clothing this way I find they know the difference between bedtime and day time I also hate seeing babies in babygrow all day but this is my personal preference, with my 1st when he was born weighed 8lb 4oz and was in new born for over a month and then he went into up to 1 month then 0to 3 I dont like clothes to be to big so I bought in each size but i was lucky and he very rarely had any accidents and at most went through 1 or 2 outfit changes but not every day am due my 2nd in 3 weeks so will let you know how many i go through this time x

userabcname · 30/03/2020 09:47

I'd buy 15 short sleeved vests and 15 sleepsuits (get the ones with inbuilt scratch mitts, no need for socks) and a couple of hats. I doubt you'll need long sleeved vests if you're due in summer. I don't bother with outfits - mine wear sleepsuits all day and night, much easier than faffing about with trousers etc. You might want a cute little outfit for a nice photo though (or you may get gifted one). See how you get on - my first was a big baby and grew very quickly so he was hardly in newborn. My second was smaller and grew slower so he actually was in them for a decent amount of time.

DreamingofSunshine · 30/03/2020 09:48

I had a July baby and was advised by the partners of DH's friends with July babies to have 10-15 of vests and sleepsuits in newborn and 0-3m. None of my friends had babies and I didn't live in the UK, so there was no popping out to buy another pack of vests etc. I bought secondhand on Facebook/eBay or in the sales and kept it at my parents in the UK until they bought it over.

DS was 8lb 1oz, exactly what the growth scan said three days before he was born. He had some feeding issues so wore newborn for at least 5-6 weeks.

TwoKidsStillStanding · 30/03/2020 09:53

Look at the weight indicator if you buy newborn as these are really variable - can be anything from 7lbs to 9lbs. Mine have both been in the 8lbs range so preferred first size/up to one month.

I’d get 10 short-sleeved vests (sometimes advertised as bodysuits) and 10 sleepsuits (all in one or babygros), and a couple of cardigans. I don’t think you need anything else for the first few weeks.

Mine were 8lbs 8oz and 8lbs 12oz. One lost a lot of weight but was long so had to cut the feet off his newborn sleepsuits! The other has grown faster and was mostly in up to one month but is now 10 weeks and in 3-6 months. In short, don’t buy loads until the baby is here, as they’re all different!

firsttimeivfmum · 30/03/2020 10:28

Thank you everyone!

My first was premature and even 0-3 were too big at the beginning, but after two weeks they were too small... I woud not be buying loads, but bear in mind they need changing a bit more often :)

Spanneroo · 30/03/2020 11:00

We bought only a couple in Newborn sizes, but mostly 0-1month, and then 0-3. Babies were 7lb 7 and 8lb 5 (we also had diddy 5lb twins who were in preemie, but let's ignore them for this) The smaller singleton baby was too big for 0-1 month within a week. The larger was swamped by 0-1 for about 6 weeks! (She's still heavy for her size now). 10 short vests, 10 sleepsuits, 2 cotton hats, pack of bibs, 2 cardigans. That's plenty for a summer baby. We did that with no tumble dryer in April and never ran out.

Just make sure you have at LEAST 15 muslins. I had 30 for DD1 and we would still run out, even with a wash on every single day! Blush

kitbit36 · 30/03/2020 11:08

All you really need the first few weeks are vests and sleepsuits to wear we didn't dress baby in anything else. we had to get more as baby suffered from reflux so was washing constantly. Scratch mitts came in handy too as hands were always cold.

YDYtrue · 30/03/2020 11:27

I’d say 10-12 vests and 10-12 babygrows.

A couple of cardigans.

3/4 sheets. 3/4 blankets.

Some muslins (the amount you need will depend on the baby, dd1 I wondered what the hell they were for, ds1 I used hundreds, the other two 3 or 4 has been plenty)

snowy0wl · 30/03/2020 12:06

Hello,

Congrats on your pregnancy. I would also recommend vest extenders. They are really handy if the nappy system you use is a bit bulky. I bought mine from here.

www.naturebabies.co.uk/vest-extenders-x3-white-c2x9340370

Also, you can never have too many muslins! Smile

Whoareyoudududu · 30/03/2020 13:22

I had two ten lb babies who didn’t fit in newborn clothes at all. Also had 9lb 6 and 8lb5 babies who were in newborn size for about a month before shifting to 0-3. I wouldn’t invest in much newborn size at all because it’s a bit of a waste. I’d buy a pack of newborn baby grows and bodysuits and that’s it unless you’re expecting a tiny baby. 0-3 months probably 10 of each.

PleaseStopCrying · 30/03/2020 13:27

Just make sure you have at LEAST 15 muslins

Just wanted to reiterate this point, buy millions of muslins they get through so many of them and even when you feel like you have plenty there will still come a time when you will somehow have run out. Grin

wondering7777 · 30/03/2020 14:12

By vests, do people mean this sort of thing?

www.johnlewis.com/john-lewis-partners-baby-pima-cotton-sleeveless-bodysuit-pack-of-3-white/p3164278

Spanneroo · 30/03/2020 14:18

Yes wondering though we preferred short sleeved ones (like a tshirt)

ps1991 · 30/03/2020 14:42

@wondering7777 yes either those or the same but with cap sleeves or long sleeves. I would get some cap sleeve and some long sleeve. We’ve never used sleeveless ones like your link
