How much clothing for a newborn?

Hi all, I am 32 weeks so have a little while yet but as we're all at home a lot more right now I've started to get all of my bits ready for baby's arrival. How much clothing in newborn size would you recommend mummies? I have tonnes of 3-6 months size as we've been kindly gifted these. However, I don't have a huge amount of newborn and 0-3 months just yet, but before I order some more I'd like to know how much baby will need. I currently have 3 plain white vests, 3 plain white sleep suits and 6 patterned grows. I know I need more. How much?

Thank heavens for this thread.

I had no idea that baby needed a bodysuit (vest) underneath the sleep suit 😊🙈

Why are the body suits nearly always patterned then if they will hardly be seen if worn underneath something else?

@marshmallowsontoast I've got lots of white long sleeved vest/baby grow things, and then I put the short sleeved one on top if it's more colourful/bright. I figure it's exactly the same as doing it the other way around .... he's just been one and I'm probably being such an uncool mum, but ah well, reminds me of being at sixth form and wearing short sleeved tshirts over a long sleeved one.

Depending on where we are and how warm it is I'll often put ds in a long or short sleeved vest and just add leggings or trousers. Much easier when changing his bum and you get to enjoy the pattern/design of the vest.

It depends on the baby though as ds hates layers whereas some babies will have 2/3 layers ontop of their vest.

@PleaseStopCrying

Thanks, that makes sense!

My baby was a January baby, by the time the summer came around we would just put him in a short sleeved vest and shorts. It’s only when they’re a tiny baby they need more layers. You’ll instinctively know what they need ❤️

Long-sleeved vests are really handy if you plan to use grobags (sleeping bags for babies). My baby is just under 5 months old and I switched to a grobag a couple of weeks ago. She gets quite warm in the 2.5 tog and so I just put her in a long-sleeved vest rather than a full sleepsuit/bodysuit. As @ps1991 says, all babies are different and you will get to know what your little one prefers. But newborns do need 2 layers (vest and bodysuit) to start with until they can regulate their own body heat.

Many sleepsuits have integrated mittens. I gave up on using mittens/integrated mittens when she was a newborn, because it upset her to be unable to use her hands. Babies like to suck on their hands to self-soothe. It meant that her face would get scratched occasionally, but the skin heals remarkably quickly.
