Thoughts on drinking this far along in pregnancy obviously a small amount but can it do any harm ???

A small amount with a meal as a one off every so often won't do any damage. Whatever you are comfortable with is fine. Towards the end of my pregnancy I had the odd small glass of wine (probably about 4 glasses over the course of my entire pregnancy.)

Enjoy your glass 🍷

Toastytoes1 · 01/03/2020 20:31

Alcohol is the most dangerous substance you can put into your body when pregnant, it's worse than smoking, worse than cannabis, worse than cocaine and worse than heroin. This is not my opinion, this is a proven fact. And no one knows how what the 'safe' amount is to drink. So, just think to yourself, would you inject just a little bit of heroin? No, probably not. So I would advise against drinking alcohol.
This may sound harsh and I don't mean it to but I think people really do underestimate just how toxic alcohol can be for an unborn baby and if you understand the risk, is a small glass of wine really worth it?

june2007 · 01/03/2020 20:32

Small glass occasionally will probably be fine.

This is so wrong it’s ridiculous.

n00bMaster69 · 01/03/2020 20:35

It's fine, a glass or two will not harm the baby at this stage.

RJnomore1 · 01/03/2020 20:35

Are you all right their toasty toes? Where are you getting your info that a small glass of wine at 36 weeks is worse than heroin?

Op it will be fine. Persistent drinking throughout pregnancy isn’t ok. A glass of wine with your meal at this stage is. I’m impressed you can think of it though, the heartburn was awful by then!

summerrain34 · 01/03/2020 20:37

Omg to whoever wrote that big paragraph that was so over the top have you had a bad experience with alcohol . No I wouldn't inject my child with heroin i don't think you will find anyone that would do that I just asking about a glass of red wine with my roast dinner but thanks for the scare you have really put me of it now lol

@Toastytoes1 cannot possibly ever have heard the cry of a tiny newborn going through withdrawal from heroin if she is capable of such hyperbole over a small glass of wine. It is absolutely haunting.

Toastytoes1 · 01/03/2020 20:39

The NHS also clearly identify that no known amount of alcohol is safe so why take the risk? Yes, they'll probably be fine, but one injection of heroin and they'll also probably be fine. The long term impact against an unborn baby exposed to alcohol is known to have a significantly longer lasting impact throughout life than opioid use. I'm open to being told I'm wrong if you can find any reputable scientific study that says otherwise.....

Toastytoes1 · 01/03/2020 20:42

Actually I have @EstebanTheMagnificent as I've worked as a safeguarding nurse for many years now. I'm not for one second advocating that you actually use drugs during pregnancy. But I've also worked with babies, toddlers, children, teens and adults with foetal alcohol syndrome and am also well aware of the impact that alcohol can have.

This is a good review to make your own decision. NHS guidance changed recently from 1-2 units 1-2x per week to none but they acknowledge there is no evidence of harm at low levels - but that they recommend a ‘better safe than sorry’ approach.

RJnomore1 · 01/03/2020 20:43

Ah fab one article from an American newspaper talking about feral alcohol syndrome which is caused by persistent drinking in early pregnancy. From a newspaper in an American state which I’m
Sure is one of those trying to restrict abortion rights too.

Is that it?

And again, are you ok? I’m seriously asking as you’re response is so hysterical it’s concerning.

EstebanTheMagnificent · 01/03/2020 20:45

Then you should know better than to post such scaremongering hyperbole.

NameChange30 · 01/03/2020 20:46

Toastytoes what nonsense. One link does not make it a "proven fact".

For a thorough summary of the evidence about the impact of alcohol, smoking and drugs during pregnancy, I recommend the book "Expecting Better" by Emily Oster. I have the book and it's clear that there is plenty of evidence about smoking, drugs and heavy alcohol use being harmful - but there is limited evidence about the impact of small amounts of alcohol being harmful.

Some women might interpret this to mean that small amounts of alcohol are ok, others might decide that due to insufficient evidence they would prefer to abstain completely. Personal choice.

LH1987 · 01/03/2020 20:46

Amazing, @summerrain34 maybe avoid the small glass of red with your dinner but contact your dealer for a less risky hit of heroin Grin.

In answer to your question, personally I'm not having any alcohol in pregnancy because I'm using it as a bit of a period of detox and also just a small glass is likely to wet my appetite. However, I don't think there is any risk with having a small glass of wine with food.

Expecting Better is an interesting book that looks at the research surrounding a lot of dos and don'ts for pregnant women, the author having looked at the research felt there was no evidence that a small amount of alcohol had any negative impact on the baby.

Deadheadstickeronacadillac · 01/03/2020 20:46

Bloody hell @Toastytoes1 you would've had me locked up during my second pregnancy then! Oramorph every 3 hours and for the first 5 months high dosage morphine before I knew I was pregnant.
I was very prepared to have to deal with a new born who would have to go through withdrawal, but was incredibly lucky that she was 8lbs and no problems.
A glass of wine will be fine. Enjoy your last few weeks @TheVeryHungryTortoise and good luck xx

CatEnabler · 01/03/2020 20:49

If it helps I think I've implanted recently due to implantation discharge, and had a shot of red wine in church as part of the communion this morning... Haven't decided if I'll stop taking the wine in communion yet if it's a viable pregnancy...

Toastytoes1 · 01/03/2020 20:59

Did you even read that study @DonnatellaLyman? The results clearly state they're inconclusive in their findings and don't actually make any recommendations for change of practice.

No known amount of alcohol is safe for an unborn baby so why take the risk? Honestly. I genuinely apologise if my comment alarms or upsets people but I am a passionate advocate against drinking during pregnancy because it can potentially cause harm. And of course most babies will be fine if Mum drinks one glass of wine, or two glasses of wine, or eight, or twenty, or eighty. I've met raging alcoholics who got extremely lucky that their baby didn't appear affected and I've also met people who claim (and I have no reason to disbelieve them) that they 'just' had one or two glasses a week because they thought it was fine and their children were not fine.
The reason alcohol is so damaging is because our bodies are not very good at flushing it away so the baby is exposed and you wouldn't give a baby a glass of wine would you? Ironically our breasts are actually very good at filtering it out so it is totally okay to have a glass when breast feeding as long as you're responsible with it but it's not the same during pregnancy.
My concern is if people perpetuate the idea that it's okay to have a drink here and there, where does it stop? Someone reads a thread like this and sees so many responses saying 'of course it's fine, a few won't hurt' but they interperate a few as a few too many sadly.

RJnomore1 · 01/03/2020 21:00

Well that’s a world different from your first comment is it not?

Oblomov20 · 01/03/2020 21:03

Oh for Gods sake toasty, what rubbish.
An occasional glass will be fine OP. Totally totally fine!

HomerSimpsonSmilingPolitely · 01/03/2020 21:10

I think it's important to do your own thorough research and then draw your own conclusions. If you drink even a small amount of alcohol whilst pregnant you are taking a risk. We all take risks every day, and avoid others. Only you can say how much risk you are comfortable with.

One thing I would say for sure- if you do decide that you are going to have that glass of wine, please just enjoy it. If you're going to go on a big guilt trip about it then it's probably not worth it.

DonnatellaLyman · 01/03/2020 21:25

Apologies above I should have said ‘paucity of evidence’ not no evidence. Typing two things at once. Worth a read.

Darkstar4855 · 02/03/2020 04:36

Our breasts don’t “filter out” alcohol Hmm

NotYourHun · 02/03/2020 06:46

@Toastytoes1 as a safeguarding nurse you should know better than to take such a hyperbolic, hand-wringing stance.
