Can you walk into the hospital?

Hi all. I have just done a pregnancy test and it is very boldly positive. I really want to go to the hospital to confirm it. Do you know if I can just walk in to a hospital and have a test or do you need to book an appointment ? I can't find anything online. Thanks.

You’d need to make an appointment to see your gp- they will refer you.

Sussexmidwife · 16/02/2020 17:04

A positive home test is all that you need. The NHS does not pay for another one,
Why do you feel you need it confirmed?

recreationalcalpol · 16/02/2020 17:04

If you’ve had a positive urine test, they won’t confirm it at hospital. Just fill in the online form to book in and they’ll see you at your booking appointment at around 8 weeks. Where they still won’t confirm it!

Persipan · 16/02/2020 17:05

Is there a reason you doubt the result? Generally you don't get 'confirmation' of a pregnancy test from your GP, hospital, or anyone else; pregnancy tests are very reliable so unless there's a particular reason to do so, you won't usually be offered further tests.

Bigearringsbigsmile · 16/02/2020 17:06

Why do you want to go to the hospital? What do you think they will do?
Even when you go to the gp they wont test again just accept your word for it and book you into the system!

salsadipp · 16/02/2020 17:06

It's mainly that I want to see how far along I am

You'll get a dating scan at 12 weeks. Do you not know when your last period was?

Princessfaffalot · 16/02/2020 17:08

We can help you work that out op but no, you absolutely cannot just walk into a hospital to get a pregnancy confirmed. When was the first day of your last period?

TrophyCat · 16/02/2020 17:09

Call your GP surgery tomorrow and they can book you in with a midwife.

Alternatively, if you're desperate to know then there are private companies where you can get a dating scan done - Google to see what's available in your area

lloe7 · 16/02/2020 17:09

The hospital won't scan you etc as a walk in unless you are having issues such as bleeding and pain. You will have to let the gp know you are pregnant who will work out dates by your last period, and book you in to see the midwife. You won't be scanned until around 12 weeks pregnant- it doesn't matter if the dates are a bit out, when I went for my 12 week scan I was actually 14 + 5!
Congratulations, OP!

HJWT · 16/02/2020 17:09

You need to go to your GP, they will refer you to a midwife and she will send you for a scan, you can't just walk into a hospital and ask for a scan... not in the UK anyway!

Persipan · 16/02/2020 17:09

They'll just work off the date of your last period, unless there's a reason not to. The first scan (the one done at around 12 weeks) is used to confirm your due date.

LeekMunchingSheepShagger · 16/02/2020 17:12

Tell us when your last period started and we’ll tell you how far along you are!

You can’t turn up at a hospital. Phone your GP tomorrow and ask how to get a booking appointment with a midwife (in my area the GP has to refer you, in some areas you can book straight in with a midwife)

SinkGirl · 16/02/2020 17:13

Hospitals don’t confirm pregnancy tests or do as hoc scans unless there’s a medical issue. GPs don’t do tests either - in most areas you are just told to self refer to midwives who’ll see you around 8-10 weeks with a scan around 12 weeks.

FenellaMaxwell · 16/02/2020 17:14

This really isn’t how it works. Your GP will refer you to for your booking in appointment with the midwives, which is done at about 8-10 weeks. To work out how far along you are, you calculate from the date of your last period.

salsadipp · 16/02/2020 17:28

Thanks everyone. My last period was 10/01/20

Are you happy to be pregnant or unsure what you might want to do?

salsadipp · 16/02/2020 17:29

@Sussexmidwife unsure, I think I'm in complete shock at the moment really

OP posts:
FenellaMaxwell · 16/02/2020 17:30

That makes you and 5 and a half weeks pregnant.

Sussexmidwife · 16/02/2020 17:30

That makes you just over 5 weeks now.

Sussexmidwife · 16/02/2020 17:31

...assuming a 28 day cycle

Princessfaffalot · 16/02/2020 17:34

Do you track your cycles on an app or Apple Watch or fit bit? That would help you work out your typical cycle length. Mine is 31 days as oppose to the standard 28 so might be worth looking into if you can find out your last 3 period start dates. But you are probably around 5 weeks pregnant.

BadCatDirtyCat · 16/02/2020 17:36

If you think you might want a termination you can call Marie Stopes or BPAS - they will chat to you and do a scan to check how far you are and make sure it's not ectopic (at least that's how it works in my area). They won't pressure you either way.

Thesearmsofmine · 16/02/2020 17:37

You can book a private scan for confirmation and to see how far along you are. Nobody ever confirmed my pregnancy(3dc).

Sussexmidwife · 16/02/2020 17:44

Happy to discuss by PM if it would help x
