Early scan

LadyBird2020 · 09/02/2020 19:48

I went got an early scan today - 6 weeks.
Going by the first day of my last period (23/12) I would be 7 weeks tomorrow.
However, going by the date we could have possibly conceived I would be 5 weeks and 3 days today.
At the scan, we see the gestation sack but no yolk sac. The sonographer said this was normal for a 5 week pregnancy but to call my GP tomorrow to get referred to the EPU for blood tests and to rescan on the 24th Feb.
Has anyone else had this please?
This is my first pregnancy and whilst I am trying to stay calm and have an amazing boyfriend who is doing his best to be positive, I really am worried.
Any help/ experiences greatly appreciated.

Was it an internal scan or abdominal?

BecauseReasons · 09/02/2020 19:52

This happens all the time OP. I constantly caution people on here not to do early scans before 8 weeks for precisely this reason- it causes needless worry and I do think the places that offer these scans from six weeks have a lot to answer for.

In the vast majority of cases it is absolutely fine. Try not to panic.

Jojo19834 · 09/02/2020 19:53

Yes this is perfectly normal but you shouldn’t have gone so early as this was highly likely to have happened. Also, not sure why NHS now needs to pick up cost just because you have gone so early against advise? Surely you should wait and go back. Most people don’t get scanned until 12 weeks and if they go before are advised everywhere not to go so early as there is the possibility you will see nothing and panic. I had one at 6.5 weeks, earliest clinic would scan as I was IVF so they knew my dates to the minute. Any natural conception would just be too risky at this stage and cause unnecessary distress, and cost.

Jojo19834 · 09/02/2020 19:55

My response is a little harsh, but I am annoyed at the NHS now having to pick this up. Hope they tell you that you have to go private or wait like thousands of others

BecauseReasons · 09/02/2020 19:58

Bit harsh @jojo19834. I mean, I agree with you, but presumably OP didn't gather much information on early scans before she went for hers and she can't change it now. It's unfortunate but it's really the fault of the scanning companies who value profits over the mental wellbeing of their patients and then refer the problems they've created over to the NHS to fix.

LadyBird2020 · 09/02/2020 19:58

Smithecat- I had an abdominal and internal scan ...

BecauseReasons · 09/02/2020 19:59

Ah, crosspost

LadyBird2020 · 09/02/2020 20:04

@BecauseReasons thank you so much for your helpful response. This is my first pregnancy and with no contact with any medical professional, even after visiting my doctor, I went on the advice of the early scanning centre and went for a scan to settle my mind. If I have the blessing of another baby in the future, I definitely wouldn't go so early. You are so right. Wish I had more information on it before I went.

OP posts:
LadyBird2020 · 09/02/2020 20:07

@Jojo19834 slightly harsh when I am already a nervous wreck. From finding out I was pregnant, I couldn't even book a doctors appt without grief. I did what I thought was best with the information I had. I paid for a scan in the hope to settle my nerves. On the advice of the sonographer, I will do whatever is best for me and my baby...
Yes, the NHS is under pressure but it's people that go for a sniffle that are a bigger concern rather than someone like me who is concerned about the health of their unborn child and not having been through this before, I have to go with the information I have.

Oh well, OP- hindsight is 20:20, as they say, and you know now. I'm sorry you're having such a worry about it now but in a week or so you can have another scan to reassure yourself. It'll be fine.

I'm about as far along as you, but with baby #2. Hope everything is smooth sailing for you from here on out.

HalfBiscuit · 09/02/2020 20:09

Scanning companies really shouldn't be allowed to do scans before 8-9 weeks as there's very little to conclusively see, and it causes more worry than necessary.

OP it's completely normal to see very little at this point, there just isn't much visible this early on. The NHS only do routine scans from 12 weeks because it's only by that stage that they can definitely see something.

Sleepyquest · 09/02/2020 20:11

I had an early scan. It stressed me out. Wouldn't do it again! Biggest waste of £80

LadyBird2020 · 09/02/2020 20:15

@BecauseReasons yes, it will be a long two week wait but hopefully all will be well. I was so excited to be celebrating my 30th birthday with the thought of a healthy little baby growing but now I am just worried by it all.
Oh congratulations. :) hope you have a healthy and happy pregnancy. I really appreciate your time responding to me.

LadyBird2020 · 09/02/2020 20:17

@HalfBiscuit thank you for your response.
I had no idea that it was such a common thing. It's terrible that these companies can advertise early scans knowing there is very little they can see.
It has really helped hearing from you. I hope 24th Feb brings good news. I've wanted to be a mum for so long, I just hope it goes to plan.

OP posts:
LadyBird2020 · 09/02/2020 20:20

@Sleepyquest I am with you! Definitely wouldn't do this again. Never been so concerned.

OP posts:
MsChatterbox · 09/02/2020 20:22

Please please please don't be worried. Chances are everything is fine!

LadyBird2020 · 09/02/2020 20:27

@MsChatterbox thank you! I am doing my best to stay calm. I never thought I would be lucky enough to celebrate my 30th birthday carrying our first baby so was so excited when I found out but now go this dark cloud looming until further tests and scan. Thank you for taking the time to respond to me. :) I really appreciate it.

@LadyBird2020 I completely understand why you're concerned, but like previous posters have said it might still be too early to see properly. I'm having an early scan tomorrow morning at 6&4 because my consultant scheduled one (I've had 3 previous MC's). I'm perfectly aware that there might not be much to see yet and the thought of that is terrifying.
Hope your scan on 24th goes well.

MsChatterbox · 09/02/2020 20:32

datayze.com/miscarriage-reassurer

Use that site. With no bleeding or pain there's such a high likelihood everything is just ticking away as normal and too early to show on a scan! It is still a great 30th because currently are pregnant and that is so so special!

It seems kind of daunting the first time because to you it's a massive life changing thing. To medical professionals it's no big deal for the first few weeks. I was the same and felt almost abandoned until my booking appointment at 10 weeks. But just keep using the NHS website for any information you need! It is a bit of sitting and waiting which is so hard to do but just focus on the fact that you are pregnant and how exciting that is!

PixieDustt · 09/02/2020 20:33

It's so so early I think it's normal to only see that on the scan. You can see a HB from 8 weeks I believe x

LadyBird2020 · 09/02/2020 20:36

@SoonToBeMrs91 thank you for responding. It is comforting that so many mums to be have experienced the same thing and gone on to have a healthy baby or know that this is pretty common so early on.
I really hope your scan goes well tomorrow. You sound like a very strong woman. Wishing you a very healthy pregnancy :) x

LadyBird2020 · 09/02/2020 20:38

@MsChatterbox thank you! I will take a look at that site now. I've had no pain or spotting/bleeding at all....
I love your outlook. I will definitely take that onboard. :)
It's just so strange the first time round knowing the first 12 weeks are the 'danger zone' and you have very little contact with medical professionals.
Thank you so much for taking the time to respond to me. X

@PixieDustt thank you. I really hope we have good news following the blood tests and follow up scan. X

Everything crossed for you! The worry never goes in pregnancy always something to worry about! Even when baby is here 🤣 x

LadyBird2020 · 09/02/2020 20:44

@PixieDustt Thank you. :). That's what I said to my boyfriend today. Hopefully all goes well but this is our life from now on, always a little one to worry about.
