Placenta previa - if no bleeds, can you avoid being hospitalised?

At my 20 week scan it turned out i have a anterior placenta with it low and partially or fully covering OS. I'm doing everything i can to make sure I dont have a bleed and have a 32 week scan booked in.......I've read a few stories of people not being allowed home after that scan despite never having a bleed?!

Does that really happen?? Please fill me with hope!!

I had pp and placenta percreta (when your placenta grows out of the uterus) and still managed to be allowed home between bleeds because I was 5 minutes by ambulance from a high risk maternity unit (not my maternity hospital). I eventually stayed in once the bleeds got more frequent.

If you haven't had a bleed and are near to a maternity unit that can handle an emergency then I don't see why they would keep you in.

@123bananas you have no idea how much that relieves me to hear! Thank you!

Me! Had to be careful but not hospitalised at all, at one point I was sad about this as also had anaemia badly and really fancied a few days away from toddler reading mumsnet on bed rest. Twas not to be.

Snowbear20 · 31/01/2020 20:24

@mcberberloop I'm happy to do bed rest at home if it comes to that i just don't want to be stuck in away from my partner and boy. Thank you for your positive story Smile

Find out what your hospital policy is. I had no bleeds and was kept in after my 36week scan with no warning (hadnt started mat leave, missed my baby shower etc). I was totally fine, dd was delivered safely by c section at 38 weeks, but I was so unprepared for that 2 weeks in hospital and losing the last bit of time with my dh before we became parents.

RoLaren · 31/01/2020 20:29

Grade 4 placenta previa from 18 weeks. Also had placenta acreta diagnosed via an MRI scan the day before delivery. No bleeds and no hospital admissions at all. Weirdly I woke up on the day of the planned CS bleeding - it was as if my body knew it was 'Go time'!
Good luck Flowers I know how scary PP is.

Snowbear20 · 31/01/2020 20:34

I'm going to ask about it at my next midwife appt and see what could be done to avoid it if it is still the same at the next scan

The sonographer was SO relaxed about it, it was only when i googled it I found out more!

I had placenta previa diagnosed at 20 weeks. Scans at 32, 36 and 37 weeks then a section at 39+1. No bleeds and no hospitalisation at any point. Absolutely no issues but did avoid sex and flying as advised.

Snowbear20 · 31/01/2020 20:47

@proudpeacock wow they really did give it a good chance to move!

Would anyone be happy to tell me which hospitals you were at? Even if its via DM, in case the one we will use comes up

vincettenoir · 31/01/2020 20:53

No bleeds and no hospitalisation. I was advised to avoid sex and call an ambulance if I bled after a certain point.

Snowbear20 · 31/01/2020 21:00

Right DP is being put on a sex ban as a few of you have mentioned that now!!

OP posts:
RyvitaBrevis · 01/02/2020 00:45

I was told no intercourse and no horseback riding. (I think that second one was meant to be an example of the kind of thing not to do, not an exhaustive list. Grin)

poopatroop · 01/02/2020 03:40

I have been told at my 20 week scan I have anterior too, and low lying placenta abutting the OS. Booked for a scan at 32 weeks to check if it has moved (currently 27w) but had no bleeding plus no advice at all to avoid sex/change behaviour. Will bring it up at my next midwife appointment on Thursday though!

Snowbear20 · 01/02/2020 06:23

@RyvitaBrevis thats a very specific list if it was the full list Grin Thanks to Googling i had already given up running and the classes i do. Have been swimming though as its low/no impact......DP has been informed of the sex ban thats on as of last night, his face dropped but he understands

@poopatroop sounds like you had the same experience as me. I have an appt Friday so will be quizzing them in more detail then.

Mine is 1.6cm from os.

Told at 32 week scan to stop work (on feet, long commute, stressful) which was a surprise but possibly for the best.

Also: no sex, lifting or pregnancy yoga!

No bleeding (yet, touch wood) though.

Kept hearing 90% move up from 20 weeks. Knew mine wouldn’t, somehow!

Carbis · 01/02/2020 07:06

I had a scan at 32 weeks and was told not to have penetrative sex but no other advice. I’d had no bleeding at that point.

Low and behold at 33 weeks I started bleeding. I had a bit of a panic as the only thing I was told to do was call the midwife line. That was busy so I called 111 who sent an ambulance.

So my advice is check what you need to do in case you do bleed. Then you might panic less than I did! The baby is totally fine but I was really worried until I was on the monitor.

Sorry, I don’t say this to scare you, just to help you be more prepared than I was! Maybe pack an overnight bag in case.

I hope you get through without any bleeds 🤞💐

LividLaughLovely · 01/02/2020 07:16

Yes to the bag.

I’ve had an “emergency” rucksack bag packed since about 24 weeks and took it to work/in car wherever I went - including hospital notes.

Mistymeow · 01/02/2020 08:17

Just to say I had the same at the 20 week scan but was told 9/10 times they move. I had an unrelated scan at 27 weeks and placenta is now high which put my mind at ease. Perhaps you could arrange a private scan to check placenta position to see if it’s moved? Good idea also to discuss with the midwife.

Snowbear20 · 01/02/2020 08:24

@Carbis were you allowed home again before the baby arrived?

@mistymeow i have been considering a private scan but I'm not sure if we can afford it

Need to look into an emergency bag then as although i usually work from home i could be anywhere in the UK with work when i head out

@LividLaughLovely i cant find anywhere in my notes where it states how far/how covered it was and i didnt ask at the time of the scan as they were so relaxed

OP posts:
LividLaughLovely · 01/02/2020 08:33

Doesn’t really matter how far at 20 weeks - mine was “abutting”.

Guess they might have mentioned if completely covering as that’s even less likely to move?

Do you know if it’s posterior or anterior? Posterior also less likely to move up as back doesn’t stretch in the way belly does, I think...

Snowbear20 · 01/02/2020 08:39

@lividlaughlovely its anterior so fingers crossed!!!!

Join the club! I have a thread running on this too. Such a horrible worry isn't it.

Carbis · 01/02/2020 08:56

I only came in yesterday and they are talking about letting me home tomorrow. I think there will be so many variables that effect it. My bleeding stopped pretty quickly and the baby was fine, they were more worried that my blood pressure kept dropping but that has stabilised too.

I’ve had steroid injections to help the baby’s lungs to develop, in case they need to deliver early. The consultant is hoping to get me to 36 or 37 weeks, maybe longer if I don’t have any more bleeds / severe bleeds before then.

Snowbear20 · 01/02/2020 09:34

@MamaBearThius i did see your thread. To be honest my main fear is being in hospital.

@Carbis fingers crossed for you
