Placenta previa - if no bleeds, can you avoid being hospitalised?

At my 20 week scan it turned out i have a anterior placenta with it low and partially or fully covering OS. I'm doing everything i can to make sure I dont have a bleed and have a 32 week scan booked in.......I've read a few stories of people not being allowed home after that scan despite never having a bleed?!

Does that really happen?? Please fill me with hope!!

Me too. Couldn't imagine being without my little girl or husband. I've packed a bag though which helps my mind a bit. Nice hand cream, books I haven't got round to reading since Motherhood! Nice snacks. Yes it'll suck to be in hospital if it comes to it but it'll only be temporary, and then we will have our babies out safe. When are you actually due? Do you know what you're having?

Snowbear20 · 01/02/2020 09:56

For us we have no family locally so for DP to do everything would be impossible as well as he wouldnt be able to work so we would be financially stuffed!!!!

I've not packed a bag but may do after my next midwife appt. I don't have the boredem threshold to cope with hospital and i have never been away from my boy for even one night!! I know they don't do it lightly but i did find a medical journal thst being kept in didnt affect any outcomes

Due end of April and its a surprise, what about you

Yep we are the same, rely solely on eachother! Lovely concept until faced with this situation and we realise how different we are to most families. I've been away from my 3 year old once, when I had emergency Appendix surgery and it was the longest night ever. How old is your little one? Oh I thought you'd just had your 20 week scan...I'm due officially 7th June so 22 weeks ish but all depends on this placenta nonsense. Would be having an elective anyway due to previous birth so think that'd be done end of May. Having another little girl =)

@Snowbear20 The sonographer was relaxed about it as the VAST MAJORITY of low placentas at the 20 week scan are no longer low at 32 weeks. The upper segment of the uterus hasn’t formed yet and once that does it pulls the placenta up with it.

In the small chance it is still low they will put a management plan into place depending on if the placenta is just low or if it is growing into / through the uterus. Placenta accreta, increta or percreta and depending on the grade of the placenta praevia.

It’s impossible to say if someone would or would not be hospitalised as it’s unique to each person depending on the findings and their individual risks.

At this point in time however there is nothing to worry about, stop googling and enjoy your pregnancy.

Here you go, some helpful information from the RCOG that gives you the states of it actually being a problem at delivery. Hopefully will reassure you for now.

@MamaBearThius yup thats it,we also work opposite times to minimise childcare costs. Our boy is nearly 2, very very much a mummys boy and immensely cuddly......been trying to get him used to not being picked up all the time for a cuddle just in case. Have you got your 32 week scan booked in?

@Indella I'm weirdly not worried as such, more trying to work out the logistics - due to the lack of family locally planning is incredibly important. I also have a huge hospital phobia and so worry a little about the effect on my mental health if they want me in

Bless you. Really feel for you, in the same boat by the sounds of it. Yes, but my Dad very kindly is paying for a private scan at 28 weeks to see if it's moved at all as due to have a few nights away when I'll be around 30 weeks. Horrible feeling stuck in limbo isn't it

Snowbear20 · 01/02/2020 18:14

Ive been considering booking a private scan, its just the cost! Yes the not knowing is very irritating but then i guess because so much can change they cant really give us any info!

What area ish are you in? Groupon have good deals on scans. Our local private place had half price deals on last month too, I paid £40 to find out she was a girl. (I get confused with sex and gender and don't want to get flamed on here for getting it wrong) which is an expense of course but will be worth it to find out if it's moved!

Snowbear20 · 01/02/2020 19:31

Only scans locally that are discounted on there are the sex scans, I'm thinking i might still pay it for peace of mind though! Think I'll have a chat with the midwife first and then decide! You're having an ELCS anyway are you?

I’m not sure how useful the private scans are at checking placenta - they had to go internally with my 32 week one to confirm how low it was...

Don’t know if anyone has experience of a private scan looking at placenta who can tell me otherwise?

Snowbear20 · 01/02/2020 21:39

@lividlaughlovely they have that facility at the ones I've been looking at. The staff are often sonographers who work in the NHS part time making a little extra cash from when I've had private scans previously and chatted to them

My PP was picked up by a private sonographer at an 18 week gender scan. It was confirmed by a NHS anomaly scan two weeks later.

MamaBearThius · 02/02/2020 06:42

Oh yes @Snowbear20 definitely an elective regardless of what my next placenta ends up doing. I had a 7 day labour with my little girl and an emergency section...which sadly led to sepsis - and I was too exhausted to cope with it all. I have a real thing about feeling in control, and hopefully this time I can rest at home until the day before my section, drop little one off at preschool and be done within a few hours. Might all go to pot with this Previa thing but that was the plan!

Snowbear20 · 02/02/2020 07:59

@MamaBearThius wow don't blame you for the ELCS! Sounds like a great plan, even if worst case scenario the previa remains you may get to carry it out Smile

@RoLaren ah so good to know it can definitely be done at a private scan

It was not a fun 2 weeks! Fingers crossed for us Smile
