How many sleepsuits in your hospital bag?

I'm starting to put my hospital bag together - planning a hand luggage sized case for me and changing bag for baby. But how many sleepsuits should I pack? I've got them in a few sizes so was thinking a couple in the smaller/bigger size and maybe 4 in first size. We aren't far from the hospital so can easily get back for extra supplies, it's just whether DH can find everything!

I’d take 4 if your husband can come back for some. Show him where they are. What sizes are you taking?

strawberry2017 · 29/12/2019 13:06

Maybe have a back up bag at home just in case. Depends how long they keep you in x

Hall84 · 29/12/2019 13:24

Thank you! I've got a few tiny baby (up to 6lbs), some first size (up to 10lbs) and some 0-3. I didn't want to buy too many until we knew what size we needed and there's plenty of big supermarkets nearby. I did wonder about a back up bag with extra so I can have pairs of pyjamas rather than 3 bottoms :-)

I’d probably primarily take in the up the 10lbs ones and 1 of the tiny baby. A back up bag at home sounds good if you don’t think your husband would get everything. I left hospital the next day and some friends of mine stayed in 5 days so you never know.

IslaMann · 29/12/2019 13:34

Tbh you're likely to only be in overnight for 1 night, so I'd take 4. Good back up would be a spare bag packed and left at home.

lazybutton · 29/12/2019 13:40

I’ve packed 4 with another 6 in the back up bag which I’ll leave in the car.

Alderaan · 29/12/2019 14:18

This time I've packed six sleep suits and six body suits and we live close to the hospital.

When I had my daughter nearly fifteen years ago, we came home the same day but she still got through five sleepsuits because she was sick loads of times! This proved rather inconvenient because my partner at the time wasn't a driver.

Boymummy3 · 29/12/2019 14:21

I'm Packing 3 babygrows. 1 smaller size other 2 0-3 (I have bigger babies) 3 0-3 in vests. 2 pairs of mits and a hat(thin one) 2 blankets and a coming home outfit. :)

Darkstar4855 · 29/12/2019 14:22

Don’t bother with 0-3 unless you think your baby will be really big. My son was 8lb 8oz and the 0-3 were huge on him, had to send my partner out to buy more 0-1 instead! The newborn ones fit nicely but didn’t last long.

Next time I’d take a pack of newborn and a pack of 0-1.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 29/12/2019 14:23

Skip the 0-3m.

Two new baby and three 0-1m (h&m and Next both do this size).

Rosebel · 29/12/2019 15:03

My youngest was straight in to 0-3 month sleepsuits. I had only packed one and the 0-1 were too small. My husband had to dash home and pick up some more 0-3 for her. So I would probably take 2 of each with a back up bag at home.

yellowmelon · 29/12/2019 15:14

Ah, great thread! I started putting together my hospital bag yesterday. What are you thinking about sizes op?

yellowmelon · 29/12/2019 15:16

Should have read purposely - just saw your comment about sizes. I'm feeling a bit clueless tbh. Have so far packed 4 baby grows and vests - half new born and half up to one month - as well as cardis... Not convinced this is enough!

meow1989 · 29/12/2019 15:30

I had 3 first size with vests and 3 0-3 months with vests and a hat (take more hats, the first one will get bloody and they like the keep the hat on the whole time you are in hospital).

GrumpyHoonMain · 29/12/2019 15:32

If you are breastfeeding most hospitals will keep you 2 nights as a minimum even if things don’t go wrong.

Lxx16 · 29/12/2019 15:38

6 babygros (3 tiny baby, 3 first size), 6 short sleeved vests all in first size. I've also got his going home outfit which is in first size too :)

Lxx16 · 29/12/2019 15:41

@grumpyhoonmain really?? That doesn't sound right to me at all .. my midwife has said as long as comfortable we can go home the same day. The shortest time they have kept someone in for is 5 and a half hours. They don't want to keep you unnecessarily and will always encourage you to go home if you feel you can.

Hall84 · 29/12/2019 15:45

I'm feeling very clueless! 4 seems to be a good number (although I'm a bit worried about the 5 sleepsuits overnight!). I have a pack of 0-1 from Next but I'm struggling to tell the difference between them and the first size from Asda.

@Hall84 not much difference in them just a different way of naming them I think?! Also, even if you have bought brand new my midwife said wash them in what baby's clothes are going to be washed in (anything non-bio) as their skin is super sensitive after it's exposed to the outside world

flissity · 29/12/2019 15:49

I breastfed both and never stayed in long. First was 1 night because of epidural issues, the other I left 4/5 hours after birth.

gothicsprout · 29/12/2019 15:50

Both my DC have come home wearing 0-1m size babygrows (one was 7lb14, the other 9lb9) so unless you know you’re having a particularly small or early baby I’ve found that’s a good size to work with. I think we took 3 sets of vest + babygrow each time, but we were discharged very quickly and I had backups waiting at home to be picked up if necessary.

moodolph · 29/12/2019 15:50

Ask hospital on Policy as well.

Here (Scotland) you need one to go home. While in hospital they wear ones donated only. Mint saves any confusion if one gets scooped up and put in hospital washing and lost forever.

The way it works is you use whatever you need, baby grows, vests, cardigans, hats from a huge trolley. Dump in wash when changing baby. Patients in the other wards knit the cardigans and hats.

When you leave you are asked if you have a few baby grows or vests you would like to donate when baby outgrows them to please do so.

Very occasionally they run short of something and have a Facebook post which then lifts numbers again.

rottiemum88 · 29/12/2019 17:53

Skip the 0-3m.

Don't do this. DS was 9lbs13 and went straight into 0-3. None of the midwives ever said anything about the likelihood of him being a bigger baby from my measurements, so I was quite unprepared. Covering your options with a few in each size is sensible

FALSE- I bf and could have gone home same day (baby born at 10am) but stayed in 1 night due to a bleed- then went home the next day!

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 29/12/2019 18:03

Pls don’t worry OP- my niece was born being too small for the 0-3 months baby gro her parents had bought. So she was in a slightly too big outfit for a couple of hours whilst her dad went to a shop and picked up some tiny sized ones- no big deal! Unless you live in the middle of nowhere with no help and no car you will be fine!
