I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.
There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.
MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos
Another invaluable website is:
www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk
If you need help in obtaining medication, phone them on:
024 7638 2020
Lastly, the NICE guidelines on treatment are useful:
cks.nice.org.uk/nauseavomiting-in-pregnancy
I would like to thank everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.
It has been suggested that I add some practical tooth cleaning advice: a lot of sufferers find using a child's small toothbrush and strawberry toothpaste far less nauseating.
On my image of a pink castle: that is an image I use because when I was little, my family had a Snakes and Ladders board with an image on the last square of a pink castle in the clouds. As Hyperemesis is so like a grotesque version of Snakes and Ladders - eat a meal, go up a ladder, first thing in the morning bile run, down a snake - I have used the image of that pink castle on the last square of that Snakes and Ladders board as a metaphor for the happy end of Hyperemesis.
Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

Anyone had a cold whilst having hyperemesis? Holy shit I feel like I'm dying.
Throwing up...with a blocked nose...I literally nearly choke to death every time. WHYYYY OH WHHYYYY

Melleebacca · 14/12/2019 18:23

@beautyandthebump1 currently enduring that here! Had a cold for 10 days now. It’s hideous. Every time I cough, I’m worried about vomitting. Every time I vomit, I’m worried I’m going to pass out from not being able to breathe.
Sorry to hear you’re suffering from a cold too.

LucindaE · 14/12/2019 19:31

Areallthenamestaken. Welcome. I am sorry that you are suffering badly. I hope the midwife can give you something that helps. If not, don't hesitate to make a GP appointment for stronger meds. That is so upsetting about five previous miscarriages. I had only one MMC and that was upsetting enough. Don't despair, things get a lot better for most people at some time between 15 and 20 weeks. Even the unlucky minority who suffer throughout almost never suffer as badly later as they do early on.A good anti-acid can make a big difference. Some drinks and foods of a sort that have helped others: flat full sugar coke, ice lollies, the juice of tinned fruit, Lucozade, fizzy water, Elderflower water, Robinson's fruit drinks, fizzy orange, lemonade, Dr Pepper, Elderflower coridal and tonic water (eallison's tipple), 7Up, Iron Bru, soda water, ice cubes, chocolate milkshakes (maybe soya), cocoanut milk, orange squash and sips of orange juice if not too acid. Some foods of a sort: nibbles of chips and crisps, baked potatoes, cuppa soup, cheap ice cream, tinned fruit, slices of melon and mango, Scotch pancakes and biscuits. It might be worth investing in some kesostix if you don't have them already as while they are not the best test of dehydration, hospitals do take them seriously.
HairsprayBabe I am glad the smoothie stayed down. As Melleebacca points out, slow sipping is certainly the key.
Whatsnext11 I think Cyclizine tiredness combined with early pregnancy tiredness and Hyperemesis exhaustion is completely enervating (spelling?).
Melleebacca Sorry about a cold that has lasted ten days; that is horrible with Hyperemesis. Much sympathy for BeautyandtheBump over a foul cold too.
Mellebacca That sounds good about the GP rehydrating at home. I have heard that kits like that are available on Medicare in the US. Your DD sounds amazing. Smile
Apologies to anyone rudely overllooed /cross posted with.

abbbs1 Four GP's talked such nonsense? That really is disturbing. Confused

OP posts:
abbs1 · 14/12/2019 19:37

@LucindaE yep all of them. Basically none of them gave a crap and wouldn't prescribe medication to me so hospital was my only option. One even said to go to a neighbours house for coffee to take my mind off it when I was 7 weeks and vomiting non stop and holding barely water down! You really cant make it up! Absolutely crazy.
I have my 25 week GP appointment next week with the one that told me to make smoothies and eat fresh fruit and veg so not looking forward to that. I asked for a different doctor but they didn't have anyone else so will be interesting to see how the appointment goes.

BeautyAndTheBump1 · 15/12/2019 13:57

@Melleebacca 10 days 😫😫🤒 omg you poor thing!! Its awful isn't it! Literally choke so much everytime I'm sick!

LucindaE · 15/12/2019 14:50

abbs1 Words fail me about medics giving such advi ce to a Hyperemesis sufferer. Angry it is like telling someone with two broken legs to go for a brisk walk and forget about it. Shock Really sorry you can't have another GP for that appointment.

BeautyandtheBump I so agree about the horror of a bad cold and Hyperemesis for ten days for Melleebacca.

Thank you for all the well-wishes.

@beautyandthebump1 I hope I haven’t scared you! First 7 days of the cold were the worst, now I’m pretty much ok, except my nose gets blocked while vomitting. I’m looking forward to the Christmas break and knowing the kids won’t be bringing any more illnesses home from Kindy.

@abbs1 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️ About those doctors. I would love to eat fresh fruit and Veges and smoothies, they just taste bad right now and taste worse the second time around. I did see a dietician last pregnancy because of my weightloss. She gave me protein powder to help build up my strength again. Would’ve taken it if it didn’t taste revolting. But she also recommended just eating anything that sounded good.

Hope everyone else is coping ok. Flowersi

LucindaE · 16/12/2019 19:19

Melleebacca I hope the LO's have recovered and you do soon.
I hope everyone is coping. It has been quiet on here of late. I hope that doesn't mean everyone is too ill to face a screen...

Whatnext11 · 17/12/2019 17:07

Hope everyone is getting on ok and not getting too much silly advice! I'm doing lots better at the moment, no sickness for over a week so hoping I have been lucky and it's eased off now I"m part way through the second trimester. Phew!

HairsprayBabe · 17/12/2019 18:27

Hi all sorry have been very quiet
I am surviving, I basically eat the exact same thing every day vomiting has reduced to 5 or so times a day but very nauseous still.

I have my first midwife appointment tomorrow and we also booked in a private scan for the evening. I am really looking forward to seeing the little bean, hopefully it will make me feel a bit less miserable about the whole thing.

I have been back at work today and yesterday fortunately I work from home so I am able to be comfortable and run off whenever I need to.

I am absolutely exhausted I think it is the constant nausea it is so so wearing

Hope everyone is doing well or as well as can be considering Flowers

LucindaE · 17/12/2019 20:46

HairsprayBabe I am sure the scan will please you. Five times a day is still pretty horrific; don't overwork too much. I am glad at least it is from home. I hope you get some relief soon.
Whatsnext11 That is happy news.

@HairsprayBabe I'm glad to hear you're doing well, we were on the same thread a few weeks back, I felt so sorry for you when you started being ill, I've had HG in a previous pregnancy, and almost felt suicidal so I know the horrors of it too well Sad ...I'm 8 weeks now and everyday I'm terrified it'll rear it's ugly head.
Thinking of you all and hoping you all feel better soon x

LucindaE · 18/12/2019 20:38

mywrencalls Welcome. Thank you for your lovely sympathetic message. I do hope you escape it this time. If you should need us, this thread is always here...

Hello all, I’ve been quiet recently.. feeling OK-ish, so life has been back to its hectic end of year self for a while. I am incredibly ready for Christmas & having family around to help look after my toddler! But equally, Christmas seems pretty pants this year. I long to want to eat a nice chocolate biscuit (my fav bit of Christmas is this chocolate biscuits 😂)..

Recently discovered by chance my omeprazole was making my nausea a lot worse.. so I’ve stopped it. But the heartburn is baddddd.

Sending love to those suffering through the worst bit, I’ve been there. It was the lowest I’ve ever felt in my whole life. Please, please push for ondansetron if your sickness is severe (although for me, it only works for the vomiting, not the nausea) .. print off info from the Pregnancy Sickness Support website & take it to your GP! Push & push to be given a trial at the very least.

Don’t wait to ask your midwife, most of them can’t prescribe. You need to speak to your GP.

Love to all Flowers

HairsprayBabe · 18/12/2019 21:55

Had my private scan today and it is the first time I have felt excited the whole pregnancy since I started feeling so sick.

Baby had a really good strong heart beat and is measuring 8+5 so I was out by only 2 days.

I have still had vomiting and nausea all day today including a very very undignified heave into a bin outside our doctors surgery, but for the first time it felt properly worth it.

DH says baby looks like a pork scratching Grin

Melleebacca · 18/12/2019 21:56

Sorry, I’ve been a bit quiet. Still bed-ridden and sick up to 4 times a day. My mum is arriving today to get me through the last couple of days before Hubby is on Christmas break.

Had my 12wk scan on Monday, and got a high NT measurement, so am waiting till I get my combined results back tomorrow to see where we go from here. But it’s looking like further testing will be the next step. It’s putting a real dampener on the whole HG is worth it thing.

Areallthenamestaken · 19/12/2019 09:19

I'm so sorry @Melleebacca. The waiting must be awful and I hope they get back to you with other results ASAP. Try not to panic and remember the scan isn't 100% reliable for diagnosis ThanksThanksThanks

LucindaE · 19/12/2019 19:08

Mellebacca Poor you, I do sympathise; I was given a 1 in 33 chance of Downs after blood tests, and had a Amnio, and the waiting was miserable; though the chances may be on your side, it is very hard. I hope the combined results coming in are reassuring. I am glad your mother will be coming in to help, at least.

Bol87 Your OH will soon change his mind about that, I am sure. Grin
HairsprayBabe Sorry to hear about Omprazole adding to nausea: that is something I hadn't heard before. It is so annoying that there is this Ranitidine business at the moment.
Waves to Allthenamesaretaken and everyone.

OP posts:
Melleebacca · 19/12/2019 19:54

@LucindaE I’ve been given a 1:5 chance. We’re doing additional blood testing next week and an amnio in Jan.

@Areallthenamestaken Thank you for your optimism. We’re hopeful, but trying to figure out our plans either way. Unfortunately preliminary bloodwork has come back as worrisome also.

Feeling emotionally flat on top of physically unwell. Vomiting pretty much non-stop all afternoon every afternoon which is getting tiring. I keep enough food and fluids down in the morning to survive, but it’s not a pleasant experience.

Areallthenamestaken · 19/12/2019 21:25

@Melleebacca everything crossed for you

I went to the gp today and he was so helpful. He gave me an anti-sickness injection and prescribed some tablets. I feel so much better already and I've managed to eat. I hope the tablets work as well as the injection had and maybe I'll manage a Christmas dinner. There's a chance I'll need to go to hospital but aside from feeling exhausted I feel almost normal. I hope this feeling lasts!

HairsprayBabe · 19/12/2019 22:01

I feel like I am getting worse today, nausea has been really intense all day not kept down any food really and I am just slowly sucking crushed ice to try and get more liquids into me Still on the Buccastem and Cyclizine but they don't seem to be taking the edge off much today

Whatnext11 · 20/12/2019 10:51

Hi everyone, a bit gutted today as today and yesterday started feeling sick again. Had a week or so with no sickness, it's amazing how quickly I forgot how nasty the sickness feeling is. No actual sickness yet. Not sure whether to drag myself to work for a couple of hours or to rest.

WatchingFriendsOnRepeat · 20/12/2019 13:09

Hi everyone.

I'm 27wks with my second child. I'm currently in bed feeling miserable while my poor 4yr old son is happily watching his iPad; something he doesn't usually get to do much of but because I'm so sick I have no choice!

With him, I had a terrible pregnancy but mostly because of SPD and aches and pains - plus my appendix burst at 19wks and nearly killed us both. It was an awful but very different pregnancy. I had bad morning sickness with him in the beginning, like "normal" but that was gone by about 14 weeks and then the other issues associated with pregnancy started happening - migraines, pelvic girdle issues, back pain, sciatica etc. And of course the appendix.

This pregnancy though... I don't know how I'm going to cope for the next 3 months!!!! I don't know if I have HG or just really bad morning sickness still. My midwives just say "oh sometimes it carries on" but really?!?!

This is all day, everyday. I lost loads of weight in my first trimester and haven't put any on since. I haven't lost anymore and maybe keep a quarter of what I eat and drink down, so they say they aren't worried. There is nothing that triggers it. One day I can be really proud of keeping down a small plain baked potato. The next day I will do the same and it will come up immediately. Keeping anything down is something to be proud of as it doesn't happen often!

I have fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue, which is being massively triggered, but I have to get on with it because my son is on holiday from school for Xmas and he and I are on our own - my partner ran off 8 weeks ago with a 19yr old and has since said he wants nothing to do with us and not heard from him again... but that's a whole different issue and thread!

I guess I came on here because I just want to know if it's in my head and I just have regular morning sickness (at 27wks???) or if it is something I should push for some help with!

I often feel dizzy, so I force a bit of food and water down, sometimes just a cup of bone broth or veggie broth (for all the vitamins and electrolytes) and I feel better temporarily. But I'm always hungry and I'm always sick. The only time I actually feel ok is when I'm doing the act of eating, and then it's back!

Oh and the acid reflux and heartburn.....

Like I said, I don't know how to get through the next few months - even if this isn't HG, I hate it!

My baby keeps me up all night anyway because he is so active 24/7. I'm thinking perhaps that his unbelievable wriggling and somersaulting, seen and commented on at every scan and check up (my belly moves like an alien!!!) has a part to play in why I'm so sick - could it?

WatchingFriendsOnRepeat · 20/12/2019 13:24

Oh yeah - and the hourly heavy nosebleeds! I guess that's a good reason to be tired and dizzy too ☹️

Melleebacca · 20/12/2019 17:22

@WatchingFriendsOnRepeat ...I’ve done friends, I’m now on to Big Bang Theory.
Have you been prescribed meds? There are people who suffer the whole way through, and are triggered by baby’s movements. With my first the little flutters set me off from 16-20wks, but fortunately the vomitting resolved at 26wks (nauseous till birth though).
Try not to worry about the screen time. You have to do what you need to in order to get through this tough season. We signed up to Disney+ and it’s literally the babysitter in our house at the moment.
I do hope you get some relief soon.

@Whatnext11 Sometimes a relapse is just to remind you that you’re not quite 100% yet, and I would recommend resting. On days that I do a bit more, I get sick earlier and more frequently.

@HairsprayBabe there’s numerous hormonal surges that can explain a run of bad days. Generally every 3-4 days I feel like I’ve gone up a level on the sickness chart. I can’t quite remember when I start to improve, I can only remember when the vomiting stopped.

@Areallthenamestaken Generally the injections are more effective than the oral dosage of meds. But hopefully the injection gives you a boost to keep the meds level in your system at an effective level. I have already written off all Christmas meals. The idea is just to lie down through all the events and try my best to not vomit in front of extended family.
