I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.
There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.
MOH's wonderful website is full of useful information on this illness:
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos
Another invaluable website is:
www.pregnancysicknesssupport.org.uk
If you need help in obtaining medication, phone them on:
024 7638 2020
Lastly, the NICE guidelines on treatment are useful:
cks.nice.org.uk/nauseavomiting-in-pregnancy
I would like to thank everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.
It has been suggested that I add some practical tooth cleaning advice: a lot of sufferers find using a child's small toothbrush and strawberry toothpaste far less nauseating.
On my image of a pink castle: that is an image I use because when I was little, my family had a Snakes and Ladders board with an image on the last square of a pink castle in the clouds. As Hyperemesis is so like a grotesque version of Snakes and Ladders - eat a meal, go up a ladder, first thing in the morning bile run, down a snake - I have used the image of that pink castle on the last square of that Snakes and Ladders board as a metaphor for the happy end of Hyperemesis.
Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

I have been given Cyclizine by my Doctor which I started yesterday.

I only took one tablet (50mg) which massively helped with my nausea but I seem to have developed a terrible headache.

I only took half this morning and again have this awful headache, only thing I can think that’s caused it is the tablet - otherwise possible I could be dehydrated but I’ve been drinking lots so not sure it’s that.

Did anyone else suffer from headaches on this drug?

It seems I can’t win :(

LucindaE · 10/03/2020 18:56

Rigamorph Welcome. Sorry you are suffering. It is fully possible to have Hyperemesis without vomting. I so agree with others, do ask for stronger meds. Here is my usual spiel which I hope may be of some use. Things do get a lot better for most people at some point between weeks 15-21. Even the unlucky minroity who suffer throughout almost never feel as bad as in the first tri. Have you got kesostix to check for the early stages of dehydration as even though they are not the best test of it, hospitals do take the presence of ketones seriously? You can get them from a chemists. An anti acid can make a surprising difference. ere are some drinks that have helped others. Full sugar flat coke, ice lollies, the juice of tinned fruit, Elderflower water, tonic water and Elderflower cordial (eallison's tipple), Lucozade, soda water, lemonade, fizzy orange, orange squash, Iron Bru, orange juice if not too acid, ice cubes, Dr Pepper, Chocolate milkshakes (maybe soya), 7Up, isotonic drinks frozen into cubes, flat full sugar coke frozen into cubes and fizzy water. Some foods of a sort: nibbles of crisps and chips, tinned fruit, slices of melon and mango, baked potato, toasted bagel with butter, grated cheese, cheese puffs, Scotch pancakes, cuppa soup, biscuits and cheap ice cream.
ConstantlyPanicking While it is true that you are on a stage which is where many sufferers are at their worst, I wonder if you are still so ill if it might be worth enquiring about steroids as the constant dehydration sounds awful?
Someone enquired about taking an advocate, and thickhead Mother Hen forgot who it was, but I think it is a great idea. A friend or relative has more energy to argue than the debilitated sufferer, and if it is a husband or boyfriend he is often listened to more. Anyone would think it was 1962, but there we are...Shock
Waves to Bol87 - wishing you all luck again -Connie222, Calithorpe87, Babybel90 and everyone.

Connie222 · 10/03/2020 19:27

Okay, now this might be TMI....

When I first started talking ondansetron I didn’t go to the loo for 12 days and got impacted. It took three days of 8 sachets a day of movicol to shift (I was taking max diesel or. lactulose and fibregel throughout but they did nothing).

I never want to get in that position again so I’ve been taking movicol everyday but I can’t seem to get a maintenance dose right. I’m talking between one and two sachets a day so that I go everyday.

The ondansetron has had the side effect of paralysing my bowel so I literally have no feeling of needing to go until the very last second. The cancer patients I used to work with were on the same drug so I know how common this is!

I mean I’d rather this than becoming constipated again but I’m worried about accidents!

Any tips on the movicol dose? It seems to be the only thing that works.

Connie222 · 10/03/2020 19:28

Max dose of latulose, not max diesel - I didn’t get that desperate!

LucindaE · 10/03/2020 19:36

Connie222 Oh dear, I had to smile about the 'max diesel' predictive text.Wink I hope someone whose an expert with lactlose can advise you. That sounds like an horrific experience with the impacted bowels.
We haven't heard from a few people like Maz91 for a while and I hope they are doing better rather than worse.

My due date is sept 3rd - feels so far away!

Applesandlemons · 10/03/2020 20:11

@Rigamorph I feel really similar to you from what you have described on your post. I’ve only been sick once but the nausea and dizziness is just so overwhelming I’ve been off work and now am only managing 2-3 hours of checking emails at home. I manage to eat toast and jelly and can drink elderflower cordial that’s about it. Yesterday I had chips and it was a big step. I feel guilty for moaning as I’m not actually vomiting I guess it could be much worse but it does feel like my life is on pause. Im 7 weeks ish so hoping it doesn’t get worse as I’m so frustrated already!

Luckyme30 · 11/03/2020 11:16

I’ve been getting terrible headaches/migraine from cyclizine only on my 3rd day and suffering badly with the headache so taken today off work :(

Has anyone else had the headaches? Doctor is now prescribing something different, I can’t remmwber the name but my OH is going to collect it for me after work today so will know later. He did say that the drug he is prescribing is not licensed for pregnancy use and carries a warning but said that it’s g difficult to test on pregnant women and this is quite usual with medication.

Once I know the name I’ll post on here but slightly worried and now considering going without the medication :(

ConstantlyPanicking · 11/03/2020 12:24

Had my 12 week scan today and found out there's only 1 in there, so many people have told me HG is a sign of twins and its scared the life out of me. As ever, sickness had to make itself known multiple times at the appointment. Its changed my dates from 20th Sept to 17th Sept.

Although it still feel shitty, seeing that little baby wriggle around in there makes it so worth it Smile

Luckyme30 · 11/03/2020 16:56

Further to my earlier post I’ve now been given a drug called metoclopramide - does anyone have any experience of taking this?

abbs1 · 11/03/2020 18:09

@luckyme30 I've been on metoclopromide since week 9 and still on it now at 37 weeks and its helped me so much! I really hope you get some relief hun. I haven't had any side effects of being on it so hope it works well for you.

abbs1 · 11/03/2020 18:14

@LucindaE and anyone else- I saw the consultant today and had a scan and found baby hasnt grown like he should over the past 3 weeks which is what they were monitoring. Hes only gained around 1/2lb and is measuring 4 weeks behind where he should. They are going to do 2 stretch and sweeps next week and if that doesn't work they will induce me due to the growth issue.
Has anyone else ended up with tiny babies as a result of HG? Hes weighing only around 5lbs now at 37 weeks.

LucindaE · 11/03/2020 18:52

abbs1 That obviously is troubling if they have said they must bring on labour. Most babies seem to be a normal weight, despite the awful diet, but some are a little smaller; still, isn't 5lb within normal limits for a full term baby (I typed 'full time baby' [himm])? I may be out of date about weights. It will be a relief to be through this, and I expect they are just being careful. I remember they were going to induce a woman on here because of the small size near the end and then they decided that they didn't need to and it went over in the end.
Luckyme30 I am sorry I missed the post about the migranes and Cyclizine. Poor you, migraines are awful. I have heard of that side effect with Ondansetron but not with Cyclizine. You mustn't worry about metaclopramide. Some doctors are reluctant to prescribe that because in a small number of cases there is a side effect of twitchiness in the mother (not the baby) so that she has to come off it. But many are on it for months. Do take the meds, as the doctor wouldn't prescribe the meds unless s/he thought that the risk of your being dehydrated as greater than any small risk from the drugs.
ApplesandPears Sorry, I missed what meds you are on? Congratulations on chips. It is a very miserable thing; no wonder you are fed up.
Connie222 I've added your date.
ConstantlyPanicking Congratulations on your scan. I'll change your date.

Connie222 · 11/03/2020 19:18

@abbs1 Ds was delivered at 37 weeks by elective section as his growth had slowed - I had the worst sickness of all three with them. Scans said he was 5lb but he was born at 6lb 4oz

Dd was monitored closely too for slow growth but was delivered 39 weeks 6lb 9

abbs1 · 11/03/2020 21:04

@LucindaE @Connie222 thanks for your replies.
I'm hoping he still grows a bit before the stretch and sweeps next week and induction but 1/2 a lb in 3 weeks doesn't give me a lot of hope that he will grow much more before hes born. They are gonna closely monitor me in hospital until hes born but it certainly worried me a bit but as long as he comes out healthy then I'm happy even if he is small. HG has certainly taken its toll on me and my baby. Cant wait to have him in my arms.

Bol87 · 11/03/2020 22:20

Hope all is OK @abbs1 - nearly there Smile sounds like they are keeping a close eye on you! They’ll get baby out if any concerns!

Just one day to go for me 😬 I’m a whole bag of emotions, I’m desperate to not to be pregnant anymore although right now, more because babies hurt like hell. She has her feet wedged in pelvis and kicks my cervix all day long. Her head feels likes it’s cracking my left ribs. A real joy 😫 I’m so excited to meet daughter2 but also feeling so emotional about tomorrow being my last day with my daughter as an only one! Funny old thing..

@Luckyme30 - I was on Metaclopromide (plus other anti-sickness) for a few months. It’s one of the top end anti-sickness offered. For me, not as good as Ondansetron but it has its uses. It works by pushing food along your digestive system more quickly as well as the signal blocking to brain preventing vomiting. I found this action really helpful early on as I felt like food I could bear to eat just got stuck and made me feel even more sick. Metaclopromide got rid of that feeling! Defo a good anti-emetic to try for sure!

abbs1 · 11/03/2020 22:28

@Bol87 so close now. I cant wait for my little one to be here. I feel like weve shared the journey together being so close in due dates. Thank you for all your amazing advice and support. Really really appreciated. I wish you all the luck in the world and hope everything goes smoothly for you hun xx

yellow25 · 12/03/2020 06:41

Good luck today @Bol87 and @abbs1 - my little man (Caspar) arrived quickly and dramatically but thankfully safely and healthily early yesterday morning. The combination of lucozade zero and has and air made me sick just after delivering but after a bath I felt like a brand new woman!! Appetite hasn't quite returned but the relief from the nausea is just indescribable!! You have both come so far well done!

Bol87 · 12/03/2020 08:50

Congratulations @yellow25 !! Such happy news! Hope you enjoy the nausea free life with your little boy 🧡 You did it! Lots of love to you!

Ahh same to you @abbs1 - we’ve almost done it!

boulevardofbrokendreams · 12/03/2020 17:49

Congratulations @yellow25!!

Hope all is well with @Bol87 and @abbs1. just to reassure you, my first was born at 35 +5 weighing 5lbs 4oz and was absolutely fine

LucindaE · 12/03/2020 19:06

yellow25 Congratulations on Caspar. Star Smile Flowers Brew I hope you are feeling fine now, as the overwhelming majority of sufferers do within hours of the birth. Thank you for your message, which will be so encouraging to current sufferers.
Bol87 You have been invaluable on here and will be much missed. Sorry things are so painful at the moment. All luck for the birth.
abbs1 I am glad you've had reassurance from others about birth size and healthy small babies and monitoring.
Waves to all.

Hi guys
12+4 now and although the nausea is constant, the vomiting is beginning to relent a little! On Wednesday I cooked for the first time in AGES and felt like myself for a little while :) still extremely tired and resting loads but I think I'm over the worst of it...I hope! I've been alternating between ondnsetron and metoclopramide depending on the situation of my digestive system. Both still have side effects but at least it suppresses the sickness most of the time.

Hope everyone else is doing ok!

Bol87 · 13/03/2020 15:57

Well, my ever trouble causing baby decided to flip head first over night & they cancelled my section this morning 🤦🏼‍♀️ I’ve spent most of the day crying. I begged them to let me continue with the section as planned but they wouldn’t.. I do fully appreciate vaginal births are a safer option but after a traumatic birth last time & a traumatic pregnancy this time, I was excited and mentally all prepared to just get on with things today.. plus baby has had quite an unstable lie for the last few weeks which doesn’t fill me with confidence she’ll stay head down 😬

So we continue on feeling constantly sick until she decides to come along. Here’s hoping she doesn’t flip back in the meantime!

Hope everyone is doing as well as they can!
