Bright red blood - Am I miscarrying?

AlexaT · 06/12/2019 11:01

Hi Ladies,

Finally got my bfp after 15 months of TTC.

I calculate that I am 5 weeks today.

On tuesday, I saw brown discharge when I wiped after loo around 8pm. Loo again at midnight and there was tiny pinkish blob (size of a sunflower seed). Next day, there wasn’t much when wiping after going loo except the tissue paper being very light pink like very watered down blood.
Then yesterday, around midday, I felt wet and decided to wipe down there. It was bright red blood. As soon as I saw it, I really started crying and howling and was uncontrollable by my family members. I ended up asking to be left alone and called my GP, who called me in for a urine sample. She checked my sample and said there’s definitely blood but wanted to establish if it was from my urine or vagina.
She then wanted to examine me down there with the clamp (I presume) but she only looked and confirmed “yes I can see blood” and that was that. She then asked me for my first date of last period which is 30.10.2019 and said I could be miscarrying but many women bleed and go on to have babies. She then referred me to my EPU who have booked me in for a scan on monday where I would be 5+3.

The blood was consistent when I wiped down there for about 12 hours. Didn’t feel or want to wear a pad. I had nothing overnight and this morning so far.

Has anyone else experienced similair?

I know it’s a waiting game but just wanted to see if anyone could tell me whether it sounds like I could be miscarrying?

Please share your thoughts.

Thank you x

I’m very sorry you’re going through this but sadly nobody on the internet can tell you what you want to hear.

Bright red blood may mean you’re miscarrying, but equally a lot of women do bleed early on (especially around when they would have had their period) and go on to have healthy and successful pregnancies. I know it’s natural to look for reassurance, but nobody online can tell you which you will be. The best thing you can do is step away from google and try to relax as much as you can. I hope it all works out for you.

AlexaT · 07/12/2019 22:51

Thanks for your reply ChaoticKate. Deep down I knew this was the answer but I was hoping somebody might share that they had a similar experience with a positive outcome.

I will only know more after my scan.
Mentally preparing myself to expect the worst.

Anyhow, thank you for your reply.
I really don’t understand how some threads get so many replies and some (like mine) just don’t.

So thank you again for your response - it’s that much more appreciated x

I bled with everyone of my pregnancies OP. First one I miscarried and then I went on to have three full term pregnancies. Blood varied from brown to bright red and even clots sometimes. I rested as much as I could. Unfortunately you won't have any answers until your scan. Are you having any bad cramping?

SpruceTree · 07/12/2019 23:06

I bled at 5,6,7,12,13, 24 and 28 weeks pregnant. It was bright red and pretty heavy too. They gave me steroids at 28 weeks as they thought the baby was coming but in the end she didn't arrive until 37 weeks and was healthy.
Rest is my advice. Apparently it makes no difference to the bleeding but it made me feel as if I was at least doing something to try and help the bleeding settle, ok s it just seemed logical to me to go and lie down.
I really feel for you. I hope all is well OP.

@alexat so sorry you are going through this, I am really hoping for a positive outcome when you go for your scan.

I didn't experience bleeding but pregnancy itself hasn't been easy for me and it can be a very stressful time, try to stay positive and don't google anything as that can make you feel so much worse (talking from experience)

Have you had any bleeding since and is it accompanied by any cramps? I would advise to wear a pad to see how much blood there is, I have heard a lot of women who bleed during pregnancy but you will feel a lot better after you know, it's good to prepare for the worse but also to stay positive.

Wishing you all the luck and sending over loads of positive vibes Thanks

Don't take it as a miscarriage as you may be absolutely fine ! I had a bleed at 5 weeks, first was quite small but bright red and with clots and shook me up enough to go to a&e and EPU, they did my bloods and a internal exam to see if my cervix was closed and booked me for an early scan a week later, a day after my trip to EPU I had another heavier bleed that left me in bits, I thought it was game over, I went for my early scan prepared for the worst but nevertheless saw a tiny little bean with a heartbeat ! Fast forward to my 12 week scan and another baby had appeared and I was told I was carrying twins. My midwife said any bleeding in early pregnancy is common but not normal so best to get it checked out ! But she told me anything from bright red to brown, clots no clots, cramps no cramps are common, but still not normal and worth getting checked ! It's not always doom and gloom, she said. It was an awful and gut wrenching experience and it was very upsetting at the time, I'm so sorry you're having to go through it. But try and think positively xx

tacosplease · 08/12/2019 07:37

Hi OP, I bled at eight weeks (bright red blood) and was absolutely terrified that I was having a miscarriage, especially after googling. I had a scan at an EPU two days later - they said the baby looked fine and couldn’t see what had caused the bleeding, but it lessened and stopped that same day of its own accord. I’m now 19+2, have just had my 20 week scan and everything seems to be progressing normally. I just wanted to share my story to reassure you that bleeding isn’t necessarily anything to worry about. I have everything crossed for you for tomorrow - let us know how it goes x

AlexaT · 08/12/2019 14:04

Aww thanks you for all of your response ladies! It’s so lovely to read your kind words of support.

Will keep you updated if it’s good news x

Oh wow twins! That’s amazing! I’m a twin myself and would love to have twins (I think!). I was secretly hoping the bleed could actually mean a possibility of twins. Although, I doubt they will be able to tell so early at 5+3 weeks

I'm having same experience right now. Found out on Wednesday I was pregnant. Clearblue said 1-2 weeks... then started bleeding Thursday night. Its ended now but blood wasnt thick or clotty- just like a normal period.. bleeding lasted around 40 hours..not heavy but still when I wiped etc. Midwife has advised to observe, wait a week and retest. Cant help but do several tests a day. Just so frustrating not knowing. Can any medical professional determine if your ok this early on?

AlexaT · 08/12/2019 14:30

@Amberlouisexx The GP couldn’t do much so it’s very much only a scan that would tell us more.

I’ve run out of tests from testing so much after my expected period. I don’t think it’s a good idea to test tho tbh. Apparently, the HCG hormone can stay around in the body even after a miscarriage. So I didn’t want to get my hopes up just in case it was the worst. The waiting is so hard. Each day feels like a week and to think that this is the case for another 35+ weeks is just crazy isn’t it!

Amberlouisexx · 08/12/2019 14:44

I know. I'm hoping and praying everything's ok but I just have bad gut feeling. I've not had any preg symptoms either but dont know if that's just because I'm so early or because of miscarriage. I've been saying that to people I know.. every day lasts forever.. how can people do this for so many weeks and be calm. :(

summershine2204 · 08/12/2019 20:22

I'm 6+3 and I've been bleeding for a week now. It started off just when I went for a wee and it just turn the loo roll pink, and then I woke up the following morning and it was bright red with a few clots so I called 111 who sent me to the EPU, I had a TV scan and they could see the sack but no yolk but the sack is sat where it's meant to be and is the correct shape. I'm back there next Friday for another scan & im so scared of losing the little peanut. I'm still bleeding now but it isn't regular and once again it's just making the loo roll pink.

I don't know what to think but the EPU say blood doesn't mean a miscarriage. Just keep thinking positive xx

Amberlouisexx · 08/12/2019 20:24

I've just done another test.. a digital one. Its stated not pregnant. First one I've done that's not said pregnant or had blue line... assume all has been what I thought. So frustrating :( x

AlexaT · 08/12/2019 22:44

Ohh no @Amberlouisexx Don’t stress until anything has been confirmed by the EPU.

I’m now scared too as I didn’t take any tests since 3 days ago so don’t know what result it would give if I tested; but I also had a similair experience to you (bleeding for short while) and it only lasted approx. 12 hours. I still have very light spotting - as in loo roll is pink and sometimes brown ewcm -along with red bits (sorry tmi) in the loo.

God knows. Will only know tomorrow Confused

I just wanted to add my own hopes that all is okay. Not wanting to get your hopes up, but if you haven't been cramping then the blood may not mean miscarriage. My own miscarriage, I had a little bleeding then full on cramps and heavy bleeding for three-four days, at around 7 weeks.

I really hope that all is okay for you. It's such a worry, I know. I had a successful pregnancy after my miscarriage and was worried pretty much the whole time. Try to rest tonight and don't test; you're right that HcG can still be present even if you're no longer pregnant.

Thinking of you tomorrow.

MidnightMystery · 08/12/2019 23:01

I'm so sorry you are going through this Thanks

I have experienced the same last week and went to a scan to find a twin pregnancy however I had lost one hence the bleeding.
It could be a number of things so I wish you the very best for Monday Thanks

AlexaT · 08/12/2019 23:27

Thank you @SallyLovesCheese that’s really sweet of you.

I’m terrified to go but also want it over and done with iykwim.

Thank you again x

@MidnightMystery I’m so sorry this happened to you. How many weeks were you? It’s devastating that you’ve lost one, but I hope your other one will be a healthy bubba for you x

Hi ladies, just had my scan. Very much still in the dark because they weren’t able to see the embryo. Scan only showed gestation sac with yolk sac.
GC at 8mm and YS at 2.7mm.
And a subchorionic bleeding too.

Can anyone enlighten me please?

The nurse and sonographer just kept saying we have to wait until next scan for more answers or to confirm pregnancy/miscarriage.

Been booked in for another scan in a few weeks.

Only time will tell. The waiting game continues x

OP posts:
SallyLovesCheese · 10/12/2019 07:00

Sorry to hear this. It's horrible waiting, isn't it?

For me, my first scan after I started bleeding and cramping showed a sac with yolk and a second area, that they said was either another sac or an area of SCH. So I had to wait too. The next day or two was more pain and heavy bleeding then it tailed off. A week later I had another scan and there was nothing.

So yes, the next scan will tell you. Which doesn't help you at all and I can only say try to rest, keep warm and distract yourself if possible. Are you off work? I was and was glad as I wouldn't have been functioning properly.

Got everything crossed for you. I really hope lack of cramping means it's just a small bleed and that everything is okay.

starflake · 10/12/2019 08:35

I had bleeding like yours also in around 6 weeks pregnant, turned out to be a subchronic hematoma that was causing the bleeding. I'm currently 38 weeks pregnant. They prob can't see anything in sac as your too early to pick it up.

Whattodoabout · 10/12/2019 09:35

I’m so sorry you are experiencing this. This is what happened during my early miscarriage. It started off with light pink mucus when I wiped before gradually turning into bright red bleeding. Happened at five weeks.

Some people do have red bleeding and all is fine but generally it’s not a good sign Sad.

crb90 · 10/12/2019 14:15

I'm currently going through this too... I had a scan on Friday due to bleeding. They found I'm 5+4 and saw a sac, and a little fluttering indicating a heartbeat. I however am still bleeding and will have to wait until my scan on the 19th so see if little bean is OK. I'm absolutely terrified. Hope things turn out well for you op
