Bright red blood - Am I miscarrying?

Hi Ladies,

Finally got my bfp after 15 months of TTC.

I calculate that I am 5 weeks today.

On tuesday, I saw brown discharge when I wiped after loo around 8pm. Loo again at midnight and there was tiny pinkish blob (size of a sunflower seed). Next day, there wasn’t much when wiping after going loo except the tissue paper being very light pink like very watered down blood.
Then yesterday, around midday, I felt wet and decided to wipe down there. It was bright red blood. As soon as I saw it, I really started crying and howling and was uncontrollable by my family members. I ended up asking to be left alone and called my GP, who called me in for a urine sample. She checked my sample and said there’s definitely blood but wanted to establish if it was from my urine or vagina.
She then wanted to examine me down there with the clamp (I presume) but she only looked and confirmed “yes I can see blood” and that was that. She then asked me for my first date of last period which is 30.10.2019 and said I could be miscarrying but many women bleed and go on to have babies. She then referred me to my EPU who have booked me in for a scan on monday where I would be 5+3.

The blood was consistent when I wiped down there for about 12 hours. Didn’t feel or want to wear a pad. I had nothing overnight and this morning so far.

Has anyone else experienced similair?

I know it’s a waiting game but just wanted to see if anyone could tell me whether it sounds like I could be miscarrying?

Please share your thoughts.

Thank you x

Hi @AlexaT, I'm just wondering how you are?

@AlexaT my cousin and my sister both had bleeding at around 2-4 weeks that they thought it's normal period (it was a lot lighter though, not as heavy) but they did the test later and found out pregnant.
I also experienced brown blood, red blood with string, and pink when wipe at week 5, week 7, and around week 13. Although for me it was just when wiped a few times for 2 hours then stopped, and a bit of light pink morning of few days later. No explanation for why I was bleeding at week 5, and week 7. The midwife said it could be implantation bleed or some woman just more prone to bleeding than usual. For week 13 bleed, they found I had UTI, and that's probably explaining the brown spotting. I'm 20 + 2 now so hopefully no more bleeding, and healthy baby.
There's several ways to test if there is no miscarriage as far as I know:

  • blood test for HCG level, it's supposed to be doubled after 1 day. It was very difficult for me to get blood, so after couple tries, we opted for scan only.
  • vagina/ abdominal scan. I did at week 5, see the york and sac but no heart beat, so need to back at week 7 for a second scan when they saw the heart beat.
  • They also can test your blood if you need anti D injection.
  • Test your cervix to make sure it's closed, and also UTI sample.
There isn't much the midwife can do unfortunately, so only time can tell. Wont tell you not to worry, as it''s impossible not to. My experience is I rested as much as I can. My 1st trimester was difficult and I hated it, as every time I do something, I bled. But get better in 2nd trimester. Flowers
