Worth getting a newborn bouncer/swing?

Hey everyone

I'm currently due to pop anytime soon and I've not thought it's worth getting a bouncer/swing for my baby when she arrives, but now I'm not sure - ftm so I don't know if they're worth the money?

Does anyone have any experience with bouncers/swings for newborns and has any honest feedback? Both good and bad. I'm interested Smile

Cheers! Bear

This thread is quite old now so some of the suggestions may be out of date, but if you’re looking for bouncers and swings, we’ve recently updated our best baby bouncer page with lots of great options tried and tested by MNHQ and real parents. We hope you find it useful. Flowers

Do you mean a bouncy chair? If so, yes, I think they're great but in the early days you should only really have them in there for short periods at a time (I think of them like car seats) so they don't have too much pressure on the spine. You'll probably also find that in the early days your baby will want to be in your arms most of the time anyway!

Bouncy chairs become really useful from the stage when the baby starts being mobile so that you have a safe place to put them when you need a wee/get yourself a drink etc.

Bouncy seats (like a jumperoo) can only be used once the baby has good head control and upper body strength (4-5 months usually) but again, they can only really go in there for short amounts of time. They're great though!

Best of luck with your new arrival xx

I have 3! Absolutely vital here, I have one in kitchen, one in sitting room and upstairs I have a swing with a seat that detaches into a rocker that I can carry about. This goes into the bathroom when I have a shower. All were 2nd hand so no much money

Boymummy3 · 28/11/2019 13:28

I've always had bouncy chairs for my babies.. I find them good to have so they ain't always in their moses basket//pram or lay on me constantly... Only personally used them though probally after a week or 2 after baby was born as they usually just have a feed then go straight back in their moses baskets for more sleep. X

Seeline · 28/11/2019 13:33

Definitely - both mine were happy to be in them so I could move them around the house. They would watch me cook, etc, and I could take them into the bathroom whilst I showered etc

mrsed1987 · 28/11/2019 13:34

100% worth it

IVEgotthetinselBITCHES · 28/11/2019 13:45

I have 5 dc

Dc 1, 2, 3 and 4 all loved it in the swing

Dc5 is not impressed. So it really depends on your baby.

Thoroughly recommend the Tinylove 3in1 rocker. It can be laid completely flat so suitable for newborns who should not be sat up so their head slumps. It has lights, music and vibrates. I use it all daytimes for my little one to sleep in. It's brilliant!

Im planning on getting one. Figure its the easiest thing to move around if i need to have baby in room ie bathroom whilst I take a bath, or kitchen/diner whilst I cook. Probably in garden also. Going for the babybjorn as everyone says they bought others and eventually swapped to this as lightweight and baby can bounce themselves

20viona · 28/11/2019 16:23

Iv got the joie serina and it's fab. Rocks side to side or forward and back with loads of different tunes and vibrations. Baby loves it.

Bouncy chair was pretty essential for us. DS had reflux and often sat in it and napped in it during the day - lying him down in his Moses basket in the day only lasted about a week, afterwards it was a sure fire way to make him cry. Bouncing it helped him be calm and often helped him fall asleep as he got older.

BringMeThatHorizon · 28/11/2019 16:32

We had one but DS hated it. Would only tolerate it for 5 minutes if I was sat right in front of him talking to him, so totally defeated the point of it. The only time it was useful was when he got a bit older and I needed to shower while he was awake, I could usually wash and sing Old MacDonald to him around the shower screen at the same time. We got ours second hand and I was so glad I didn't waste loads of money on it.

Cardboard33 · 28/11/2019 16:33

As the above poster, my baby had reflux and much preferred sitting up in there to sleep rather than lying down. It was a real struggle to get him to spend the entire night (when he wasn't feeding etc) in his next to me, don't think he did until he was about 12 weeks. He's now 9 months and still goes in it for his day time naps, but he completely self settles so we decided not to fight the sleeping in chair aspect. It's a Chicco hoolpa that I got on a complete whim in a charity shop, but we literally couldn't be without it. We carried it all over our 3 storey house in the first few months.

LegoLady95 · 28/11/2019 16:37

One on every level of the house, just so I had somewhere safe to put them when I needed my hands free (even more important when i had DC2 and DC3). I only had the bog standard ones for around £10-£15, but they were never in there for long.

ChaiNashta · 28/11/2019 16:38

I got both a bouncer and a swing and they were absolute lifesavers (my first two DCs were colic). Definately worth it.
I did find though that although the DCs took to the bouncer straight away, they only felt comfortable in the swing from around 2 months.

riddles26 · 28/11/2019 16:43

Baby Bjorn bouncer without a doubt. Suitable from newborn until around 2years but we stopped using it around 9 months when fully mobile. Very simple design but so effective and has kept my baby happy when awake and he napped happily in it. Can easily be picked up second hand, washed, used then sold on for what you bought it for.

My only regret is not buying it for my eldest.

Totally recommend a swing!! Lifesaver Grin

ruralcat · 28/11/2019 17:00

I'v always had bouncers. My 4 week old has just started to go in hers. Some people worry about them being scrunched up so I'v got one that keeps her spine straight despite also being on an angle so don't have to worry if she takes a nap in it.

ChaiNashta · 28/11/2019 17:07

Second the Baby Bjorn bouncer. It's so light that DC2 and DC3 could bounce themselves in it from 3 months old (DC1 has short legs like me lol).

JassyRadlett · 28/11/2019 17:50

I loved our Bjorn bouncer as well - so much better than the one we had for DS1 and great because you could change the height/angle too.

The hammock design is really good.

Amanduh · 28/11/2019 18:08

Didn’t use a bouncer. Didn’t see the appeal. Swing was a LIFESAVER!

addictedtotheflats · 28/11/2019 19:04

I would get one, even if it just gives you 20 mins to gets showered in the morning, used to put mine in front of tv and put nursery rhymes on - kept him happy for a 20/30 mins. Although I probably wouldnt get one new, got mine off facebook, perfect condition and sold it for what I paid

MarshaBradyo · 28/11/2019 19:06

Bjorn bouncer yes

Swing no

Bol87 · 28/11/2019 22:32

My LO hated a borrowed swing we had but the bouncer was handy. Popped her in it as a change of scenery from laying down flat on her back all the time.. I had a very unsleepy newborn, she was awake for 90% of the day Confused and so she needed more entertaining than your average newborn who sleeps a lot!

I’m anticipating the bouncy seat will be even more useful for second baby while I have a toddler to entertain as well!

Xyzzzzz · 28/11/2019 22:35

Mine hates her bouncer! I think it’s trial and error.
