I've had an awful first few months of pregnancy the only time I wasn't sick was if I was eating all carbs as well I was 12 stone at my booking appointment at 5,7 that is over weight I weighed myself 2 weeks ago and I was 14 1/2 stone I'm horrified and now terrified of harming my baby I've read it can increase still birth.
Since then I have been very careful but not on a diet and being more active I weighed my self this morning and I have gained another 3 pounds can someone please advise me of how to lose a little bit without harming the baby I'm so scared.

I'm 18 stone and 37 weeks. Baby is fine and healthy.

I have no advice but eat a balanced diet and stay active!

What is the reason for the eating? Is it genuine hunger or emotional?

roundaround · 21/11/2019 18:54

How many weeks pregnant are you? You do put on weight while pregnant, could it be this?

Did the midwife say anything about the weight gain? Could she support you in losing weight if needed?

kitk · 21/11/2019 18:55

How many weeks are you? Fwiw I put on a stone in first three months as similar to you and could only eat potato waffles and kievs. I only put on a stone and a half in whole pregnancy overall though. Of sickness has passed then you can eat healthily. The baby won't be affected provided you're not starving yourself and even women with hyperemwsis are fine as baby will take nutrients from you. If you can, eat as healthily as possible and try to ignore any fatty cravings but also don't stress it too much. You will get back into shape. It's not ideal to gain so much but some people do

Babyg1995 · 21/11/2019 18:57

The first 4 months it was due to feeling sick but I would go away with eating then I was just starving constantly no issues with eating my weights always been healthy but I had put on half a stone from a 3 week holiday and didn't have time to lose it before I found out I was pregnant.

Sorry I'm 6 months pregnant .

That's why they weigh you at booking in - they don't work out your bmi during the pregnancy.

I put on 4 stone in my first pregnancy and lost it and more in the first 5 months. Don't panic. I promise. My BMI was 30 to start with with that pregnancy.

HavelockVetinari · 21/11/2019 19:00

Don't panic. From now on, try not to gain any more weight, but don't try to lose it. Eat a healthy, balanced diet - best for baby and best for you.

Babyg1995 · 21/11/2019 19:01

This is baby no 3 only put on 2 stone each pregnancy untill this one I don't even look like me anymore but it's the baby's health that's my worry.

OlderthenYoungerNow · 21/11/2019 19:02

You can gain weight in pregnancy, ignore @havelock. Just eat healthily, stop weighing yourself and enjoy growing and bonding with your bump.

Life's too short.

Sunshinegirl82 · 21/11/2019 19:04

I really wouldn't panic. I was about 13.5 st when I got pregnant, 14st 11 after he was born! Back down to 13 ish now and still losing weight. Baby is completely fine, nobody even mentioned my weight to me throughout the pregnancy.

Are you being screened for gestational diabetes? You could speak to your midwife about that if it would help.

If you want to be proactive I'm fairly sure you can follow slimming world whilst pregnant, they don't encourage weight loss obviously but it might give you a structure.

HavelockVetinari · 21/11/2019 19:04

@OlderthenYoungerNow actually the guidance for obese mothers to be is not the same as for those of normal weight. They are advised not to diet, but not to gain weight if possible. Do your research before posting.

Whoops75 · 21/11/2019 19:12

I put on loads of weight on no4
I had SPD plus low blood pressure and was very good to myself!!
I did nothing about it for 3 months after just enjoyed the baby.
I joined WW and went from 13.12 to 11.12 in 6 months.
Give yourself a break, you’ll find it easier to go without food when the baby is born.

GrumpyHoonMain · 21/11/2019 19:20

If you were overweight or obese at your booking in appointment the guidance will be very different. You need to mention the weight gain to your mw. In my area I was told not to gain anything with an overweight bmi, but if I were obese I would be told to lose weight (slimming world).

happytoday73 · 21/11/2019 19:23

Eat a balanced diet, keep active and please don't panic. Some people put little weight on, others 4 stone or more ... You are meant to put on weight. Don't weigh yourself. Go with the flow...giving birth is an effective way to loose weight quite quickly when the time is right!

Babyg1995 · 21/11/2019 19:23

Thank you I really don't want to gain anymore as I have gained over what I should I have midwife next week it's a long wait in-between appointments here so will be asking to be screened although I'm sure if BMI if over 30 they screen you anyway I will be asking her advice on the weight gain thank you all for your replys.

Babyg1995 · 21/11/2019 19:27

I was 7 pounds overweight at my booking which I brought up with midwife and she said not to worry which I wasn't it's the weight I've gained since I always speak to midwife about any concerns I have just asked on here as I thought mabey there would be other women who's been through it.

OP posts:
OlderthenYoungerNow · 21/11/2019 19:38

Havelock, that is the guidance but so is a lot of shit they tell you in pregnancy which is BS. I don't need to research, I was overweight at booking myself so know.

Not gaining weight is losing weight in pregnancy isn't it. You are putting on fat reserves for labour, your placenta can weigh a lot, the baby itself, you amniotic fluid. Also the OP doesn't say she was obese at booking, she's saying that the weight she's put on in pregnancy has caused her to become obese but there is a reason BMI isn't worked out during pregnancy.

Eating healthy and keeping active are much more important than getting stressed and upset about putting on weight. In fact, it'll make you healthier in body and mind.

@HavelockVetinari, make sense?

Babyg1995 · 21/11/2019 19:44

Yes can I just state again I was only 7 lb over weight at booking due to 3 week holiday I'm usually between 11 and 11 1/2 stone and a size 10 it's only since the past 3 months I would say I've become obese.

OP posts:
Crazyladee · 21/11/2019 19:45

@havelockveterinari

But she wasn't/isn't an obese mother!

OP if your midwive wasn't concerned, I wouldn't worry about it. There's no two ways about it, you will gain weight while pregnant as the baby is gaining weight and growing! The only thing you can do is to slow down the weight that goes on you... If you see what I mean.

I absolutely piled on the weight with DS1. Three months after he was born, I was still wearing my maternity clothes. I managed to shift it though. For DS2 I was determined I wouldn't fall into the same trap. So I threw out the scales, and ate as healthily as I could while still having the odd treat. I started exercising and went swimming every morning before work. This carried on a week before the birth.

Pomley · 21/11/2019 19:48

OP speak with your midwife if you are concerned, and if you are up to it walking it great, and making healthy choices where you can; but make sure you are eating enough, and be kind to yourself.

Hugtheduggee · 21/11/2019 19:50

You're 6 months pregnant, of course you are going to gain weight. And it sounds like you were barely overweight at the start as well. It would be worrying if you hadn't put anything on!

Busybeebeebee · 21/11/2019 19:53

I am 37 weeks and I’ve only gained a stone and a half. I was a healthy weight before pregnancy but my last 2 children I was 14 stone before I even got pregnant Confused

Babyg1995 · 21/11/2019 19:55

Thanks everyone it's just all new to me being this weight I want to give my baby all she needs I'm definitely trying to slow the weight down now I would never ever diet during pregnancy I'm going to make all healthy choices and keep active it's really all I can do and I'm sure will make a difference.

OP posts:
Pomley · 21/11/2019 19:59

Do what you can OP, put don't put too much pressure on yourself, listen to your body and what it needs. I lost 3 stone really quickly after giving birth, as most of it wasn't actual fat, but (whatever it was I'm not sure!). I did find walking really helped me not gain too much, and it really helped my back as well as my pregnancy progressed.

Babyg1995 · 21/11/2019 20:02

I love walking although I had pelvic girdle pain so I struggle long distances it's about 20 minutes for the school run so I'm doing that twice a day and shopping ect I walk everywhere as I don't drive I only go in the car when husband's off work.
