Reuse moses basket mattress for number 2

I suspect I know the answer but...
Can I reuse the mattress for moses basket for number 2? It wasn't used alot, my son was a nightmare sleeper and ended up in a side cot. But it's a beautiful moses basket that I can't find a replacement mattress for, it's an odd size. Seems tragic to chuck away the basket too Sad

Absolutely!

Made to measure Moses mattresses here Moses mattresses

Loaf90 · 26/10/2019 12:15

Of course you can... If you want to risk SIDS Hmm

Justasconfusedwithnumber2 · 26/10/2019 12:17

Yep, OK @loaf90 I will try custom made. Thanks @EnglishRose1320

If you want to risk SIDS

This is just not true. What a waste. It is your basket, it was hardly used, it hasn't been abused. Goodness me, when I think how old some of the stuff I used was...... do parents really change mattresses every time they have a child? The world has gone mad.

Zarara · 26/10/2019 12:21

I wouldn’t, it’s pretty much the only thing that they recommend getting new

Justasconfusedwithnumber2 · 26/10/2019 12:27

I totally agree @ArthurtheCatsHumanSlave but it's the scaremongering that wins. I have replaced the cot mattress which has been used for 2 years and so I guess I would never forgive myself if something happened if I don't replace the moses basket one too despite it being used for a total of about 30hours SadSadSad

I'll be replacing mine, op, if I have another. I worry about the dust mites that will have accumulated over time and the potential for allergy, as well as SIDS.

HangryCaterpillar · 26/10/2019 12:29

I believe lullaby trust say it's fine to use mattresses between siblings? The increased sids risk is from bringing in mattresses from outside of the home.

TheCraicDealer · 26/10/2019 12:34

We had this debate on my antenatal thread. We all know the "replace with each child" guideline but even the lullaby trust appreciates that there may be circumstances were parents reuse mattresses and have advice on their website accordingly. If the mattress is intact and had been stored safely in a smoke and pet free home and aired well before use I would reuse it.

dementedpixie · 26/10/2019 12:36

I reused the cot mattress for ds after dd used it. It was in good condition with a removable washable cover and the mattress itself was waterproof and could be cleaned

dementedpixie · 26/10/2019 12:37

Lullabye trust advice:

To help reduce this risk, if you are using a second-hand mattress make sure the mattress you choose was previously completely protected by a waterproof cover, with no rips or tears and is in good condition. The mattress should also still be firm and flat to keep your baby sleeping safely

EmperorBallpitine · 26/10/2019 12:41

I used that same moses basket mattress between two children. It was waterproof anyway, and I cleaned thoroughly, covered it with a clean washed moses basket sized sheet, no more dirty than a brand new one bought from a shop thats been sitting about in a warehouse?? Only two years old and been stored in a clean cupboard.

Celebelly · 26/10/2019 12:41

Of course you can... If you want to risk SIDS

Oh come on. It's this type of alarmist nonsense that drowns out important advice. SIDS in healthy full term babies in safe sleeping situations is very rare. A second-hand mattress barely used and in good condition is not 'risking SIDS'. So have a Hmm back

asmv · 26/10/2019 13:53

Personally i wont be... because id never forgive myself if something happened over the sake of a mattress. They dont cost thousands and you cant put a price on a child life.

Justasconfusedwithnumber2 · 26/10/2019 14:16

Well it's not just the cost but the awful waste of it IMO. It would have to go straight in the bin and off to landfill. Seems a shame but the advice is so varied and the risk seems so much for £20. I talk myself in and talk myself back out

OP posts:
asmv · 26/10/2019 17:51

Its just that 'what if' for the sake of £20

Spanglebangle · 26/10/2019 18:10

I would. You know where your one has been. You know it has been stored well enough. It seems incredibly wasteful to chuck it in a landfill and replace it with another one which will also end up in landfill.

You don't know how a new one has been stored or treated anyway. Could have spend the last 12 months in a cold, damp warehouse. New is not necassarily better.

gonewiththerain · 26/10/2019 18:14

I won’t be reusing my Moses basket mattress because ds used it for so long it’s got a big dent in it. I have used a second hand cot mattress because I know where it’s been and it was in perfect condition

ilovetofu · 26/10/2019 18:26

Wtf? Of course you can!

Teachermaths · 26/10/2019 18:39

WTF of course you re use it.

The guidance is mainly for second hand ones where you don't know if it's been smoke free or how it's been stored.

Horrible waster to get a new one. Especially something that's only used for a few weeks.

Ragwort · 26/10/2019 18:42

Of course you can reuse it. Confused.

Do hospitals replace every mattress for every new born baby? My DS was in hospital for 8 days after he was born, I very much doubt he had a brand new mattress in his cot.

Queenlatifahsleftboob · 26/10/2019 18:49

Ore used the same Moses basket mattress for all three of my children. Advice is that it's ok between siblings.

TooManyGlasses · 26/10/2019 18:52

I would definitely reuse it, especially if it’s been used as little as that and if you have stored it well. I reused ours because we had little choice financially, and it was used far more than yours has been for both children and it was stored for a few years in our loft in between.

I washed and rinsed it thoroughly by hand in the bath and dried it in the sun outside - the UV light is supposed to kill any lingering germs. I imagine our forbears did similarly!

Both my babies were full-term and a healthy weight, however.

If you really feel uneasy about it, why not offer it on Freecycle/Freegle? Someone less fussy/poorer might use it for their child, or if not, then it might get another life as a dog mattress or as stuffing for someone’s craft project.

Congratulations on your new baby when it arrives!

Justasconfusedwithnumber2 · 26/10/2019 18:55

@Ragwort good point to be fair.

I haven't ordered anything yet. My mum and dad think I'm mad. My sister thinks it's barbaric me even considering using it again. Sigh. Such mixed opinions
