Reuse moses basket mattress for number 2

I suspect I know the answer but...
Can I reuse the mattress for moses basket for number 2? It wasn't used alot, my son was a nightmare sleeper and ended up in a side cot. But it's a beautiful moses basket that I can't find a replacement mattress for, it's an odd size. Seems tragic to chuck away the basket too Sad

Idea!
Ask your midwife and tell her how long it was used for and how it was stored.

My goodness, I’d have never even considered a new mattress for my Moses or Snuz from my first! They were only used for 5 months (Moses basket probably about 4 times total in 5 months) and are in immaculate condition in a sealed bag in my attic ..

I thought the guidelines were for mattresses from other people where you may not know how they’ve been used, kept, stored, smoke free etc..

Confused

No, I wouldn't risk it. Imagine if something awful happened and it was because you didn't buy a new mattress, You wouldn't ever forgive yourself!
I couldn't get one to fit the basket we had been gifted, so I bought a foam one and cut it to size, wasn't hard, just had to trip it a little bit and pop the cover back on.

There is more of a risk with a mattress from another family. Lullaby trust says this:

There is some evidence to suggest that bringing in a mattress from another home might increase the risk of sudden infant death very slightly. When using your own mattress for a second (or more) time, ensure it is still firm and flat with no tears or holes, and is not sagging in places. Thoroughly clean the waterproof layer and ensure the mattress is clean and dry before making it up with fresh bed clothes.

I did. Miniscule risk doesn't dictate my life. If it did I would sell my car.

EmperorBallpitine · 26/10/2019 19:17

What exactly is the risk?
Poor hygiene/spores - relates to unknown storage of 2nd H mattress
Unsafe surface/saggy - thorough eyeballing of mattress will determine.
Musty/dusty/pet hair - again, if you know where it was kept you know if it's clean.
Thinking skills are important when applying advice.
A matress should be clean, firm and fit the cot. If it does, it is safe.

5 of my daughters cousins had used it before she did, it kept being handed down. Back in those days no one gave it a thought.

Imagine if something awful happened and it was because you didn't buy a new mattress

Or it could have been because you formula fed, because your baby napped for 15 mins in another room, because you are younger than 20, because your baby doesn't have a dummy, because you had a boy, insert one of the many things that is 'to blame' for SIDS

All this hand-wringing about a barely used mattress when the only guidance is that one from outside the home 'very slightly' increases an already minuscule risk.

Banana54 · 27/10/2019 09:00

I'd buy a new one :)

The evidence is mixed online..

So Surely the point here is for peace of your own mind??? Not being judged on whether you do or dont re-use it.

If its bugging you then replace it!! If not, dont.

Women have enough to worry about bringing a new baby into this world, i wouldnt want to add to that gigantic list with a measly mattress worth £20. Its not worth the stress
