Flu jag when pregnant

Is this just a straight yes or are there considerations? I really don't know enough about it!

Of course you should get it. It's recommended for pregnant women as they are one of the most vulnerable groups. Talk to your midwife about the best time in your pregnancy to have it.

Please don't be swayed by anti-vax idiots online, vaccinations are safe and incredibly important.

AnneLovesGilbert · 12/10/2019 13:05

The consideration is how dangerous flu would be if you got it when you were pregnant. Have the jab!

ALifeMoreCurious · 12/10/2019 13:05

When is the usual time to have it?

Tableclothing · 12/10/2019 13:08

It contains no live viruses so cannot give you flu.

During pregnancy your immune system is lower (so it doesn't attack the growing baby) which means that viruses like flu pose as bigger threat than they would if you weren't pregnant.

The best time to get the flu jab is asap, before you get flu (different for whooping cough, which is better to get later on in pregnancy so your baby is protected after it is born).

MollyButton · 12/10/2019 13:12

YES!
Flu in pregnancy can be very dangerous - that is why all pregnant women are recommended to have it.

Wolfiefan · 12/10/2019 13:16

I am immunosuppressed. I’ve had mine. It is far more of a risk to get flu than have the vaccination. As PP said it’s not a live vaccine.

Clangus00 · 12/10/2019 13:18

Absolutely

ItchySeveredFoot · 12/10/2019 13:20

Get the jab! And any other that is offered too you for goodness sake!

MamaFlintstone · 12/10/2019 13:21

I don’t normally get it but did when I was pregnant, without hesitation.

HJWT · 12/10/2019 13:22

DD & I both had it last year, DH did not and had the worst form of flu you can get, he nearly died when he fainted and smashed his head of the toilet!

After seeing that I tell everyone to get the vaccine, I had mine this morning and I am pregnant! Took 2 seconds and I feel fine. DH also had it this year and he was so against it.. till he got the flu 🤣

Boymummy3 · 12/10/2019 13:22

In regards as to when to get it I'm 24+6 weeks now and my midwife has just asked me if im having it done she didn't say a certain time to get it so I suppose any time is as good as any really. Xx

flissity · 12/10/2019 13:32

I’m
Having mine Monday. I’ll be 7+6 weeks

Babyg1995 · 12/10/2019 13:34

I'm 15 weeks and getting mine next week there's not a certain point to get it they want you to get it asap from October onwards.

Fantababy · 12/10/2019 13:46

Definitely get it. A very high temperature can be dangerous for the baby.

dietcokemum · 12/10/2019 13:46

Yes. GP here. A few years ago a patient of ours nearly died of the flu when pregnant - long intensive care stay. Get the jab asap.

Cherry85 · 12/10/2019 13:53

Oh yeah absolutely on board for the others but my midwife was so casual about the flu jag I couldn't quite get if she was saying it was optional or what.

Thanks guys! Will call up and book monday!

tisonlymeagain · 12/10/2019 14:16

Any point in pregnancy is fine - even if you're near the latter stages you should still get it.

Mine is booked in for Monday.

moleeye · 12/10/2019 14:17

Definitely get it.

I had the jab last November when I was 5 months pregnant (can't remember the exact weeks 🙈).

I got the flu in Feb at 8 months preg and had to be hospitalised. I was sooooo ill, it completely wiped me out and I was signed off sick from work up until I gave birth in March.

I was unfortunate to catch another strain, but the hospital said I would've been in a worse state had I not had the jab.

mistermagpie · 12/10/2019 14:30

I'm getting mine next week, I'll be 33 weeks so it seems a bit late but they said I would be covered by the one I had at the end of last year.

Cegbee · 12/10/2019 16:56

Get it, pregnant women are very high risk for ending up ventilated on intensive care and dying if they get 'flu. And this season is gearing up to be a bad one if Aus/NZ is anything to go by.

Mim21 · 12/10/2019 17:32

I got mine for free at boots, just google boots flu jab you can book it in i found it more convenient for work. You just tick you're pregnant on the form and give your nhs number. The lady doing it did ask if i was getting any blood tests in the next week so it might just be worth keeping that in mind so you can book it when you don't have a midwife appointment imminent. I've never got one previously but saw it was recommended, my midwife didn't suggest it

georgialondon · 12/10/2019 17:52

It's definitely a straight yes

Sunshineandsprinkles · 12/10/2019 19:17

Yes, you can have it until expected due date. I'm having mine on Monday when I'll be 37+5!

ALifeMoreCurious · 13/10/2019 16:52

Thank you I’ve booked mine for Tuesday. I’m 9 weeks but thought I had to wait until after my midwife appt. I’m due to have bloods drawn for harmony test on Saturday though will that be an issue? Just seen post above about having bloods drawn in week after but I have quite a few appts for bloods coming up. Every week for a few weeks I think!

ALifeMoreCurious · 13/10/2019 16:54

@dietcokemum do you know that answer to my previous comment, just above? Thank you!
