Flu jag when pregnant

Is this just a straight yes or are there considerations? I really don't know enough about it!

OP posts:

I had it when I was pregnant with DD. My husband then got flu as well as DS. I didn't get it. I'm so glad I had the jab as I was throwing up all the time, exhausted as well. I think the flu may have finished me off.

NHS advice here.

AllFourOfThem · 13/10/2019 17:00

It also protects your baby.

emmab96 · 13/10/2019 17:35

@Cherry85 I'm 18 weeks had mine done a few days ago as some of my family members had caught the flu (didn't want to risk catching it) would definitely recommend getting it as flu can cause so many complications for you in pregnancy I haven't had any side effects from it either besides slight ache in my arm after but other than that been absolutely fine definitely try and get it done!

Erismorn · 13/10/2019 17:38

Absolutely have it done. I had mine yesterday at 38+4 - didn't even have to book as my GP sent me a letter asking me to come in and have it done.

No side effects at all, not even an aching arm. That may be because everything else aches though...

codenameduchess · 13/10/2019 17:46

It doesn't matter how many weeks you are, the flu jab is done at the same time of year- our GP have just started sending texts out to book appointments.

All vaccines are optional, you can't be forced to have any but would be foolish to not take them.

dietcokemum · 13/10/2019 19:05

@ALifeMoreCurious I can't think of any mechanism whereby it should be an issue but not my area of expertise.

ALifeMoreCurious · 14/10/2019 14:44

Thanks @dietcokemum I think you’re probably more knowledgeable than me judging by your earlier response Grin and @SauvignonBlanche thanks for the link. Doesn’t seem to be an issue but I’ll ask at Boots tomorrow.

gkeal3 · 14/10/2019 14:47

I went to have mine done a few weeks ago, nurse said I don't now why they've booked you in as we don't have any. I'm now 39+2 and still calling every few days to see if they have them in yet to be told no and that it's an area thing...no one around here has them yet! Annoying as I won't qualify once I've had the baby and the reason I want it whilst pregnant is to protect baby too

ALifeMoreCurious · 14/10/2019 18:25

@gkeal3 I booked online with Boots the other day and jab is tomorrow. Can’t you do that in your area?

codenameduchess · 14/10/2019 19:16

@ALifeMoreCurious do boots know you're pregnant? Chemists usually won't give the jab to pregnant women and refer you to your own gp.

ALifeMoreCurious · 14/10/2019 19:24

@codenameduchess they specifically ask if you’re eligible in their online form and their eligibility list for free vaccines includes those who are pregnant. One of the previous posters went to Boots so that’s why I booked online. I guess I’ll just have to wait and see but the booking process is a little misleading if they don’t offer it.

gkeal3 · 14/10/2019 19:44

@ALifeMoreCurious thanks I was told that only the gp offer the flu jab for pregnant women as it is different to the normal flu jab but I'll certainly call them and find out for sure. Did you tell them you are pregnant?? Thanks x

Mim21 · 14/10/2019 19:52

Hi guys it was me who did it through boots yes it was all fine and i just checked pregnant on the form so it was free, have your nhs number to hand, it was super easy a lot of boots with pharmacy's do it.

ALifeMoreCurious · 14/10/2019 19:56

Hmm not sure if I have my NHS number to hand @Mim21 not seeing MW for first appt until next week so I’ll have to dig it out from somewhere Confused might call EPU as they should have on my notes!

thecherryontop · 14/10/2019 19:56

I got mine in my local pharmacy, my dr didn't have appointments until November and my hospital didn't have anyone to administer it on the day I was there.

Wonderhowidfeel · 14/10/2019 20:11

I got flu when pregnant and it was awful. Thank god baby was okay. I had actually had the jab but unfortunately just one of those things 🤷🏻‍♀️ Have the jab!

Robs20 · 14/10/2019 20:18

I got mine done in boots last week as my GP has also run out. Not showing as pregnant yet but they gave me the jab for free anyway. Didn’t need my nhs number, just wrote my GP name and address on the form.

busymummy19 · 14/10/2019 20:19

I'm a nurse and a colleague told me a story of a patient he cared for, she refused the flu jab when she was pregnant. She died in ICU from flu 2 days post partum.
You should definitely have the jab.

gkeal3 · 16/10/2019 11:47

Just had my flu jab at boots, it was still free as I just ticked pregnant (and with 3 days to go til due date I look obviously with child lol)
Thanks for the heads up, I would still be waiting for the docs to get their supplies in otherwise and could of missed it x
