Bleeding in week 4-5 of pregnancy

Bettie2192 · 25/09/2019 10:31

I am 5 weeks pregnant and have been bleeding for 6 days. It’s pretty frequent but not consistent. Sometimes it’s bright red fresh blood, sometimes old brown blood and sometimes it’s barely there, just a hint. Even when it’s been heavier red blood it’s hasn’t been heavy enough for me to use a sanitary pad. I have mild stomach cramps on and off. I’ve been to two doctors and they’ve said it could just be completely harmless, I’m booked in for a scan next week as well, but I’m making myself ill with anxiety. Any reassurance/similar experiences would be welcome.

I want to have a moan so forgive me but I feel so fed up. I'm fed up of the period like cramps, lower back ache and constant nausea, I constantly check my knickers to check there isn't any blood , the cramps are horrible and I'm sick and tired of all of these effing symptoms. Every cramp I get it feels like something is wrong and wish they would go away! I'm so scared of a miscarriage that if it's going to happen then effing happen already and stop with all these effing cramps and mind fu**! :-(

Bettie2192 · 28/09/2019 23:07

@loveyourself87 rant away hun I am totally with you on all of these things. I had just THREE days enjoying my pregnancy and then the bleeding started and I’ve felt crap ever since, just constant worry and tears. I’m so fucking fed up of bleeding, my back and my hips hurt if I stand up for too long, every little twinge or cramp panics me. It sounds horrible but I’m like if I’m gonna miscarry why doesn’t it just happen and let me move on with my life, instead of just bleeding slowly and making me feel like I can’t even be happy about being pregnant :( my husband is so happy and excited and is trying to be really optimistic, and I just feel upset because of how it could turn out :(

Bettie2192 · 29/09/2019 11:07

@loveyourself87 if I get confirmation tomorrow that I’m actually still in my first trimester I definitely will!

I'm 6 weeks and have been bleeding pretty consistently since Friday morning, enough to be wearing a pad but not as much as a normal period. Not had any pain on clots and pregnancy symptoms are in full effect Hmm no scan until Monday week but really can't bare the thought of bleeding consistently until then at this rate, definitely isn't spotting which most other people are experiencing. Feel wiped out and struggling to see a light at the end of the tunnel

HollieMarcelli · 29/09/2019 15:59

Hey there, keep me posted..
I found out i am 4 weeks this friday after a round of IUI w/ injectables.

I too am experiencing bleeding,
I’ve had a m/c this past May, this seems different than that.

Im going back monday to see if my hcg has risen or dropped.

My dr said “don’t celebrate just yet, and dont get your hopes up or down.. ive seen it go many ways from here”.

Im trying to stay positive yet feel neutral,
I have been in bed rest since Friday,
And wont be leaving this bed until tomorrow AM.

I Hope the best for all of us!!!

Bettie2192 · 29/09/2019 17:10

@Mystie bleeding is scary but there’s a lot of reasons why it can happen, I’ve spent the past week and a half reading about it! It’s good that you’re not in pain, and ‘heavy’ bleeding seems to refer to soaking through sanitary pads. But if it does get heavier or you are in pain, get yourself seen to whether you have to go to your regular gp, an out of hours service or even an urgent care centre. I have been bleeding for ten days now at varying rates and my doctor is still quite optimistic and told me not to get too anxious. Try to keep calm and distract yourself- you might find it better to keep going to work, or take some time off to rest until your scan.

@HollieMarcelli sorry you’re having some issues with bleeding too. Are you booked for an early scan? I’m guessing your doc might decide to refer you based on the outcome of your blood test. I’m a bit annoyed that no one has offered to do my bloods and check my hormone levels! But scan is tomorrow morning so I’m more interested in that, hard to know how to feel right now though :(

@loveyourself87 : just want to say exactly how I feel.
I bled at week 5, not period like but dark red about a teaspoon - (the doctor told so), scan but no heartbeat, need to go back at week 7 for re-scan. Bled again at week 6 (twice the amount and with some clots, scared the hell out of me), and been a little of of pink/red blood in the morning for few days. No cramps, always from 4am to 8am for me. I don't suffer from pregnancy symptom much, just need to eat constantly or else I feel sick, and sleep a lot. I feel more drained from the bleeding itself and keep on checking if there is blood when I wiped. Waiting for Tuesday next week for the scan.

Mystie · 29/09/2019 17:19

@Bettie2192 thank you so much for your message I've been considering going to the doctor this week to measure my hcg blood levels so that I can at least get some reassurance before the scan next Monday but another part of me thinks I should just carry on with normal life as best I can. Although I usually exercise every morning and I'm wary of continuing with that while I'm bleeding. I don't work so filling my day without it can be a challenge and I know the week is going to super slowly already. Thanks again for replying Smile

zoemelb · 29/09/2019 17:20

Also mumsnet has been really helpful not calm me down a bit, after seeing lots of woman do bleed during 1st trimester and not everyone has bad news. So I'm still trying to believe that he/she is well in there. Will worry about it when it comes (not that I can easily believe it).

Mystie · 29/09/2019 17:31

@Bettie2192 good luck with your scan tomorrow!! I wish mine was this Monday

zoemelb · 29/09/2019 17:36

@Bettie2192: I have the same aching in my vagina after the bleed as well, not a lot, just like a string pulling for a few second then gone. Don't really know what it is, but I do feel like that some times when I have period.
@Mystie: good idea to get the blood check out. I regret a bit didn't ask them on Tuesday to check out more, and have to deal with the anxiety.
Does anyone have problem with the nurses getting blood? Last time, they jab me 3 times to try to take blood (maybe I was very tired after waiting at A&E for 4 hours). But then the EPU told me the A&E didn't measure my hcg level, so it was useless after the blood taken. The nurse at EPU couldn't find suitable place to take blood. so I headed home without hcg measured (still pretty annoyed now). She told me to drink plenty of water the day before the appointment.

HollieMarcelli · 29/09/2019 17:40

Yes at this dr it is protocol after iui to have hcg checked every 48 hours to make sure it is doubling as needed.. i was tole friday just to rest and stay in bed until i go back monday morning for HCG test again.

Praying my hcg more than doubles tomorrow, please keep me posted and let me know how your visit goes tomorrow praying for you to!!!

TwinkleStars15 · 29/09/2019 19:26

Just wanted to update you on my earlier post. I started bleeding on Friday at 12, just a brown smudge to start with but soon turned red by about 4pm. It’s been consistent since and just like a period, no cramps but a dull ache all day Friday and Saturday. Did a test this afternoon and it’s negative, so I’ve miscarried at 5 weeks. The miscarriage was nothing like I imagined to be honest; no painful cramps, no excessive bleeding, didn't notice the embryo pass. I’m extremely thankful it wasn’t any of those things.
Good luck ladies, I wish you all the best with your pregnancies Flowers

Mystie · 29/09/2019 19:39

@TwinkleStars15 I'm so sorry, thinking of you x

Bettie2192 · 30/09/2019 12:47

Hi all, I have an update. Had both internal and external scan today, they could see a small ‘something’ but I can’t remember what they called it (I want to say amniotic sac but that might not be right?). It’s definitely not what they expect for 6 weeks, so either I’m earlier than 6 weeks or it’s not progressing. I thought docs dated you based on first day of your last period, which is why all the docs I spoke to last week were telling me I was 5 weeks last week. But I know I didn’t ovulate until a week after my period so that would make me only 5 weeks now, if not 4 and a half! So why tell me it’s based on first day of last period?! Im so annoyed. I had a blood test and will have another one in a couple days to see what hcg levels are doing. I’ve been bleeding for 11 days now and no one seems to care, so I’m supposed to just sit here and bleed indefinitely? I’m going to my regular GPs tomorrow, hopefully they will give a damn and actually listen to me. I’m so frustrated and upset now.

OP posts:
loveyourself87 · 30/09/2019 13:22

@Bettie2192 it probably was the amniotic sac, usually you would see a little embryo there too but given your dates, you can't see much before 7/8 weeks. Regarding your dates, yes , usually it is measured by the day of your last period but scans can tell you precisely your dates as they measure the foetus/embryo against the dates, so the scan was more accurate in terms of how far you are.Did they check your ovaries and womb? Any news on why you are bleeding? From what I've read, GP's and doctors do no care for bleeding unless it is heavy, consistent and painful! Try and not stress, it could be nothing. Just keep on top of the blood tests and if you are in any pain, go straight to A+E.

Bettie2192 · 30/09/2019 13:30

@loveyourself87 she said there was no cysts or anything on my ovaries so that’s good. Nothing about the bleeding, it was almost at a stop last night but started again today, especially after the internal ultrasound or whatever it’s called but that was expected. I’m gonna seen if my doc tomorrow will examine me as they might be able to look at my cervix and the inside of my vagina in a bit more detail. I’m still not in pain and it’s still not heavy enough to fill a pad in the slightest so I guess that’s a positive. I’m finding it hard to be positive as I feel so helpless :( the nurse I saw today should be ringing me this afternoon with blood test results and to tell me when to go in for the next lot
