Did anyone else only do one pregnancy test?

I’ve read quite a few posts on MN where people say they’ve done multiple pregnancy tests that have all shown a positive, so they absolutely definitely must be pregnant.

I only did one - a simple Clearblue test which shows a cross in the second window if you’re pregnant. The positive line was very dark so it was quite conclusive. It said on the instructions that it’s 99% accurate so I didn’t think to do another a week later or anything just to check.

Should I have just in case?

I did two this time because there were two in the pack and they were going out of date, one day after another. I have never tested before my period was due though so always had a clear result

HerSymphonyAndSong · 14/09/2019 07:05

(I’m not saying there was any logic in doing both tests - the second one was still “wasted” really!)

stucknoue · 14/09/2019 07:07

Didn't do any with my first, did one with my second. You do not need a test really, but of course you need patience ... the heartbeat at my first midwife appointment (12 weeks then, only scan was at 18 weeks) was all the proof I needed.

Mintypea5 · 14/09/2019 07:12

I did one with DS1 and DS2

2 with this pregnancy because the day I tested I had some bleeding. Waited a week and took another test to make sure it wasn't just a chemical

I get that people do multiple tests for reassurance "line progression" but in reality a
Pregnancy test can't actually tell you anything about how healthy your pregnancy is. It's the clear blue digitals that really POSs me off. Women driving themselves crazy with anxiety over the weeks indicator when actually those test are pretty crap.

HerSymphonyAndSong · 14/09/2019 07:14

Erm these days they would be pretty surprised if you hadn’t had a positive HPT. They don’t do the heartbeat via Doppler until at least 16 weeks now (or later in some areas) as it may not be picked up

I did loads with both pregnancies. I did buy about a million from Amazon for a fiver though.

Even though I'd never experienced a loss, it had taken me a long time to conceive with DS1 so I didn't believe it when it happened. Even when I went for the scan I was actually surprised there was a baby in there!! With DS2 I was just a bit superstitious until the scan I guess. And still had loads of tests to use up because we were never having another.

I agree about the digital ones - the weeks are a marketing gimmick, not a diagnostic tool

I only did one. It said pregnant 2-3 weeks so i believed it. And my 8 month old it very much real lol

Addicted89 · 14/09/2019 08:49

I only did one this time.
I was pregnant last year, but which unfortunately ended in miscarriage at 12 weeks. I had positive tests up until 12 weeks even though the baby had stopped growing at 6 weeks.

hazandduck · 14/09/2019 09:01

Weirdly enough, with my miscarriages I peed on lots of sticks and was obsessive.

Third pregnancy I did one test and DH just said “this is the one.” And it was, my DD.

Pregnant again now with number 2 and I did one test on my own when I realised I was late, and another to tell DH when he was home.

I can see why people keep testing, especially when they are anxious, but after my miscarriages I just thought it won’t change anything so what’s the point?

HerSymphonyAndSong · 14/09/2019 09:29

I can see how if you test early then it may be hard to tell so you end up needing to do a few over several days to get a clear result. But I have never tested early. This time my period was a week late as I was on holiday with ILs when it was due and no way to get hold of a test - there was no question that it was positive

smartcarnotsosmartdriver · 14/09/2019 09:36

I did quite a few. I couldn't really believe it and got a little thrill every time it was positive, even did a couple of digital ones. Stopped at about 6 weeks as I think the scans took over for reassurance. We lost our first pregnancy and as much as the tests don't prove anything they were like my security blanket.

hammeringinmyhead · 14/09/2019 22:50

I did two because the first was my last amazon cheapie that had been rattling about in the drawer for months and I only peed on it out of idle curiosity so I could throw it out. I thought I'd had a period two weeks before so got the shock of my life.

I did another because, due to the aforementioned bleeding, I wanted to see how many weeks I was (Clearblue said 3+, I was about 7 weeks).

Starlight456 · 14/09/2019 22:56

I did one but was 6 weeks.
I developed hyperemisis week 7 so never doubted my pregnancy

nonmerci · 15/09/2019 12:59

I always buy twin packs so have always done both for that reason alone.

BertrandRussell · 15/09/2019 13:02

I had my children quite a long time ago, and in those days I don’r think anyone did more than one. I think the idea of doing lots is yet another clever trick by marketing people to get us to spend more money and use more plastic.
