Tiny mum tall dad = big baby??

Does the size of the parents influence the size of a newborn baby? I'm not pregnant atm but my partner and I really want a baby. However, I'm terrified that I'll have a big baby.

I'm 5'1" and underweight. My partner is 6'3" and borderline underweight. We're both naturally thin but our heights are very dramatically different.

What's your experience? Do the parents' weight play a part?

What will make a difference is the quality and quantity of food that you eat. And if you are underweight you may need to address what you are eating and whether you need to change your diet before conceiving.

lifesnotaspectatorsport · 09/09/2019 17:33

I've got a bigger height difference than you with my DH but my son was completely average 7lb and 52cm at birth. He's never stopped growing since though and is much taller than his peers already at 2 years old.

Hi,
I think the baby grows as big as the mums body. I’m 5’5” and my husband is 6’6” and I’m currently 30 weeks pregnant. My baby is showing average for their size so it doesn’t look like they will be particularly big, although my husband was over 8pounds when he was born. His mum is a lot taller than me though. Obviously any number of genetic combinations could come about but from my experience I don’t have a particularly big baby currently! X

ThePolishWombat · 09/09/2019 17:35

I’m scraping 5’4”, and 52kg when not pregnant.
DH is 6’2” and around 85kg.

DC1 was 6lb 12oz at birth
DC2 was 6lb 9oz at birth.
Currently pregnant with DC3, but growth scams are indicating she will be around the same size as her siblings.

Head circumference is what makes the difference when it comes to the crunch...

OrangeJustice · 09/09/2019 17:37

In my experience the baby’s weight when it’s born bears is totally unrelated to their size in later life. I’ve got a tiny 11yr old and a giant 12yr old but the tiny one was much bigger than the giant at birth.

Sparklynails77 · 09/09/2019 17:38

Thanks for the replies so far. Really interesting. My dad and his side of the family is really tall too so I guess that plays a part tooGrin

I am 5.00 ft husband 6.20 ft, Baby's birth weight was 6.8 Ibs. 3 weeks early though so don't know how much bigger she would have been at full term. As an adult she is 5 ft 7 inches so definitely favours dh's side of the family height wise.

Sparklynails77 · 09/09/2019 17:40

@Livedandlearned my size is due to genetics. Tiny mum, tall thin dad.

DH is 11" taller than me. I had a big baby - 9lb 9oz. By c section thankfully. He's not tall now though.

I don't think there is any hard and fast rule about this and I don't think it can or should be a deciding factor in whether to have a baby with this man or not, there are many more important factors to consider in your choice of father for your baby!

mummymathsteacher · 09/09/2019 17:43

My parents are average height and build, but I was 12lb at birth. My grandparents were on the shorter side of average, yet my uncle was also 12lb. No idea how it works but I think there is some genetic link.

Shmithecat2 · 09/09/2019 17:44

My dbro and his oh were 6'5 and 5'2 respectively. Baby was 5lb 15, she's tall for her age but built like a pipe cleaner.

I'm 6'2, DH is 6'4, ds was 7lb 9, he's tall too, but again, built like a pipe cleaner. Neither dh or I are of a particularly delicate build.

VictoriaBun · 09/09/2019 17:47

I'm 4.11 ( and three-quarters !) dh just under ft . Two babies 7.12 and 7.7. Your probably get lots of variant and opinions on this one.

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 09/09/2019 17:48

DD was 8lb6. I’m 5ft4. When the midwives saw DD and then me, they looked slightly shocked that I’d had such a long baby. Then DH walked in and it all became clear. I’m not freakishly tall but DH is tall!

DD is now much older than her peers at 5.

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 09/09/2019 17:48

*taller not older Hmm

chocolatebrazilnut · 09/09/2019 17:50

I’m about 5’ and was in the middle of the healthy weight range for my height when I got pg (both times). DH 5’9 so not that tall, but was a big baby (I was 6lb). Dc1 was 7 lb 8 oz and dc2 8 lb 5 oz. Their heads were 50th centile. Both births were difficult as my pelvis is small and somewhat flattened apparently. But neither born by cs.

Lunde · 09/09/2019 17:51

I am 5'2 and dh is 6'8

dd1 was 8lb 6 (at 42 weeks - although I think that this was not accurate owing to a specific medical emergency - at 3 days she was 7lb4)

dd2 was 7lb 11

xJune88 · 09/09/2019 17:55

I was 5ft 1 and 8 stone, hubby is 5ft 11 and very slim. Baby was 8.6 at 40+4 god help me if I would of gone 2 weeks over! I was induced and had emcs

Basilandparsleyandmint · 09/09/2019 17:56

I am 4:10 and my DH 6ft both slim. I gave birth to my DS (7lb 3 0z ) with the help of forceps as his head circumference was quite big my DD was 6lb 3oz and was completely natural and no help both are quite tall children now they are growing

NuffingChora · 09/09/2019 17:56

I’m tall, husband is tall and built like the proverbial brick sh*t house. Had a completely averagely sized 50th centile baby. She was long though, and is now 91st centile for weight and height. Know lots of couples with huge, athletic father and very slight mother and not one of them has produced a behemoth baby, and most have had straightforward vaginal deliveries. Only exception was a couple where mum is under 5ft and dad is 6ft4 - strong family history of traumatic obstructed labour - both her mother and grandmother - she had two uncomplicated elective sections.

Lilsquish · 09/09/2019 17:57

I'm 5'4, around 8st
DH is 6'5 around 17st

DD 1 was 8lb 14oz (11 days late)
DD 2 was 10lb 3oz (6 days early)

Lancelottie · 09/09/2019 17:58

Ha, same here, Lunde (though I like to claim I'm 5 ft 3 on a good day).

Ours were 7 to 9 lb at birth, and the biggest then is the smallest now.

SecretWitch · 09/09/2019 17:59

I’m 4”11, both husbands were well over 6’. All my babies were 7lbs and under.

Suebnm · 09/09/2019 18:00

I have always been very underweight at 6.5 to 7 stone and 5 feet 2 and my husband is 6 feet 6 and average.

All five of my babies were around the seven pounds mark (even my twins) except my second baby who was 9 pounds at 4 weeks early. I had a suspicion of gestational diabetes with him though.

Teddybear45 · 09/09/2019 18:06

Dad and his entire family (near and extended) was not over five foot 8/9, mum five foot 4 - all of us siblings were between 6-7 pounds when born. Brothers are 6 ft 2 and 5 ft 11 accordingly and my sister and I are five foot 7.

In my husband’s family the babies are routinely 7-9 pounds at birth and nobody is over 5 ft 6 except him. The Kids despite being heavier at birth are much smaller than their peers as they get older.

There is a similar pattern amongst all the Indian families I know. Big babies / toddlers = small adults and small babies / toddlers = tall adults.
