Have found love later in life and had my first child at 39. I am now approaching 42 and thinking about my last chance to give my first a sibling, I went to the GP and asked for advice and I basically was told to get on with it but I want to wait another 6 months before trying. Has anyone on here experienced the same issue or has had a baby in their early to mid 40’s, what are your experiences like?

I was told by a midwife councillor that they just hardly see women over 44 give birth to live babies with their own eggs. So don’t wait too long. Fertility at 40 is a world away from fertility at say 45

I got caught pregnant on the pill at 41 .. my sister was 48 and ended up with twins .. a relative of mine is 43 and now pregnant ... of you want it go for it ... we are classed as geriatric mothers over 35 apparently .. I have a healthy pregnancy and birth my son weighing 9.12 ounces .... he's great ... don't let others put you off... it will happen if you want it to

But why would you wait six months if your 42? You said you want a baby right? You need to get on with it as the doctor suggested. I speak from someone who has had first child at 39, I'm now 41 and after two losses am 10 weeks pregnant and have my fingers crossed.

rubyroot · 31/08/2019 20:53

Don't wait would be my advice, I hope you get pregnant first time and it sticks. I think you'd be extremely lucky though. Really.. Get shagging and quick.

@Anonymous125 there's also a great thread on the conception board 40 + and ttc.. Lots of baby dust to us. (or something like that) it's full of ladies who are 40 and over, they're a great bunch, some have had success, some are going down donor route and some have had long hard journeys.

I’m 43. Currently 23 weeks pregnant. Conceived naturally. So far the only difference is I’m consultant led and will have regular growth scans.

Hello I think fertility declines steadily from 35 I'm 37 and pregnant 26 weeks I'm surprised I fell as I kept having miscarriages I would say don't wait if it's what you want plus maybe look at getting so coq10 supplements it's supposed to improve egg quality myself I was taking inositol when I fell with this baby. Best of luck going forward x

Thank you and best of luck with everything xx

I had my son at 38 years old. Started trying for a second at 40. Suffered 2 miscarriages, which I was told was due to poor egg quality due to age - no tests to come
To this conclusion though! We tried for another 14 months and didn’t conceive. We’d decided not to have anymore, and I found out that month i was pregnant. Now 28 weeks. Consultant led care. I guess I’d say, as there’s a chance it could take you a bit longer to conceive, maybe you might think about trying sooner rather than later. That being said, I know a lot of people that have had babies, naturally conceived, in their 40’s. Good luck whatever you decide.

I know loads of people who've conceived in their forties, wish you the best of luck

Lots of positive older mums stories in my social circle.
Why wait though is my (nosey) question?

@Anonymous125 I know many 40/41 year olds who have had a baby, but for the vast majority of them it was a second or third attempt. You could be one of those women with super healthy eggs. I know someone who accidentally got pregnant at 42 and had a really straightforward pregnancy for instance. But unless, there a real reason you need to delay and I'm guessing there is but you don't want to share, it would be prudent to start right away. At 42 there's a 50% chance of miscarrying (stats from Tommy's website) I don't want to be a naysayer, I really dont but if you do really want another I'd seriously consider starting right away.

Ditto for CoQ10, and a water and fat-soluble form absorb better. There is some research on CoQ10 for the "advanced" maternal age.

My mum had her last kid at 46, naturally and with no issues 😊
