I've read the bottle and it doesn't say "dont take if you're up the duff" or anything but thought i'd check here first.

I did a brief google and even a search on here but the posts i found were a couple of years old and they may have changed their ingredients or summat by now.

Is it safe?

Yes!

RBH · 07/08/2007 10:11

Oh yes! Avoid the tablet form though cos they are exceptionally gross and get stuck in your teeth. I think it practically became a food group when I was pregnant with dd2!

witchandchips · 07/08/2007 10:11

yes take it, you can even get in on perscription. Get as big a bottle as you can lift into your mouth at 3 in the morning when it gets really bad. btw what nonsense have you heard about heartburn and the kind of baby you are carrying.

DaisyMOO · 07/08/2007 10:11

Caveat - prob not a good idea if you ahve high blood pressure because of the sodium content, but otherwise should be fine. I used to swig it straight from the bottle

prettybird · 07/08/2007 10:12

I was prescribed it (only so I could get it free! ) when I was pregnat for heartburn.

I'm sure the basic ingrediants haven't changed.

Olihan · 07/08/2007 10:12

You can, you can also take ranitidine which is the extra ingredient in Gavilast and those type of indigestion remedies, if it gets really bad later on in your pg.

LadyOfTheFlowers · 07/08/2007 10:12

yes you can!
and the doc can prescribe HUGE bottles that you can swig from! lol

hippopotamouse · 07/08/2007 10:12

I took Rennie Rapeeze, they are fine to take, says on the pack it is suitable for taking while pregnant.

Cold milk helped me too, but I was only bad at night time, HTH!

RGPargy · 07/08/2007 10:27

YAY!!!!!!

Thanx everyone! I bought a little bottle last night (just in case i could) because lately i've been getting a bit of heartburn but yesterday was horrific!!

I'm going to see my midwife tomorrow morning so i might ring up the surgery and ask the receptionist to get my doc to write a prescription for it for me to pick up while i'm there.

Witch - I've heard nothing at all about heartburn and babies!! All i know is that after my sarnie at lunchtime i was in agony for the rest of the day!

OP posts:
iliketosleep · 07/08/2007 10:28

wow so many people do the same thing!! When i was pg last 3 times the heartburn started about 6 months and i was on a huge bottle a weeks just swigging away lol not im 6+1 and its already started

iliketosleep · 07/08/2007 10:29

a week not a weeks

oliveoil · 07/08/2007 10:29

I used to get a huuuuuuuuuuuuuge bottle on prescription

then bought a teeny bottle from Boots to carry around and put on my desk at work to swig from merrily

then top up teeny bottle as and when with freebit huge one

sorted

iliketosleep · 07/08/2007 10:30

and now not not ffs

witchandchips · 07/08/2007 10:30

okay when you go the chemist you will get the stories
-hairy babies
-active babies
-more likely to be a boy
i am but in fact they turned out to be true in my case !

RGPargy · 07/08/2007 10:30

I normally swig it out the bottle anyway (when not PG) but now that i know i can take it i'll keep a bottle in my handbag (but i'll try desperately not to look like a Gavi-addict on the train).

OP posts:
RGPargy · 07/08/2007 10:33

Iliketosleep - Have you actually HAD some sleep???

Witch - As regards your theories (well, not yours personally but you know what i mean)

-hairy babies = I sincerely hope not!! I dont think SHE will be too pleased!
-active babies = Nope, she's a lazy little cowbag most days, although it could be that i cant feel her because of all my "cushioning"
-more likely to be a boy = errr.... if it's a boy and the sonographer is wrong, he'll be wearing pink clothes til he grows out of them!

OP posts:
witchandchips · 07/08/2007 10:34

could you decant it into a hip flask so you look like a pregnant alchoholic instead?

RGPargy · 07/08/2007 10:35

hahaha @ witch!!

That'll give all the boring commuter farts something to gossip about!!!

RubySlippers · 07/08/2007 10:35

i drank gallons of the stuff when PG - certainly not helped by my cravings for ridiculously spicy food (hic)
I had it on repeat px from the GP
the tablets are ok but very chalky (but handy for travelling)

Olihan · 07/08/2007 10:36

RG and liketosleep, it may be worth starting a food diary so you can work out which foods trigger the attacks. It varies a lot from person to person but orange juice, bread, anything very fatty or creamy and very large meals can be the main culprits. Drinking milk is a commonly suggested cure but can also make it worse as liquids reflux more easily than solids.

I found that eating an oatcake when I felt an attack starting could ward it off a bit. also, eating little and often so I didn't get too hungry as having an empty stomach could trigger an attack too.

MegaLegs · 07/08/2007 10:37

I used to get a hoooj bottle of it on prescription evry two weeks, drank it by the gallon.

Smithy · 07/08/2007 10:37

The best thing about my pregnancy (well, one of) was finding out that Gaviscon was available on prescription and it was a mahoosive bottle at that! How I loved my midwife after that!

EscapeFrom · 07/08/2007 10:39

YES

Don't eat toast or pastry or tinned tomatoes, and avoid too much fruit juice. ALL trigger heartburn.

RGPargy · 07/08/2007 10:46

Well i was having toast and OJ for breakie but this didn't really trigger it off yesterday, it was the cheese sarnie that i had that made it baaaaad!!!

OP posts:
tribpot · 07/08/2007 10:49

The swigging from an enormous bottle of Gaviscon is practically a mandatory part of the pregnancy experience I think. Always wished I'd bought shares in the company before getting pregnant

For the old wives' tales:

  • hairy baby - yup
  • active baby - yup (is this meant to mean active in utero or active once born?)
  • boy - yup
