Smell of house making me heave

I don’t know if this is going to sound crazy. The smell of my house makes me want to throw up. The bedroom is fine. But downstairs, particularly the kitchen... Confused We recently got our kitchen done so it’s all brand new. My husband can’t smell anything. I’m 8 weeks pregnant.

Totally normal. We moved into a new house just before I found out I was pregnant. I spent three months thinking I’d made a huge mistake because I couldn’t stand the smell. I hated how my husband smelled too!

Sezzie87 · 22/08/2019 19:09

I'm the same!! It's either the furniture in the bedroom or the furnishings, there's this kind of 'new car' earthy smell around our bed which is really bothering me. Also I can't open the fridge anymore without a big struggle because of the food smells. Husband's deodorant (usually lovely) has started to bug me too I have hyperemesis, I'm 10 weeks, so I'm hoping this will end in the not too distant future!!

ChikiTIKI · 22/08/2019 19:11

When I came downstairs this morning the kitchen and lounge smelt of cooked (plain) pasta. It was awful. I feel your pain!

homley · 22/08/2019 19:18

Totally normal, the smell of my husband really bothered me early on Blush he doesn't and didnt smell bad it was just too overpowering, it should pass soon enough :)

SuperSange · 22/08/2019 19:19

Same here. I had HG and if I could get up at all, I couldn't be downstairs. I just dragged my ass to work when I could, and otherwise stayed upstairs.

TinyMystery · 22/08/2019 19:27

Oh also Persil. I still can’t smell Persil now without wanting to vomit.

EllenAshSky1 · 22/08/2019 22:11

Omg I could have written this myself!!!!

I'm 10 weeks pregnant on Saturday and I cannot even step foot in my kitchen without vomitting or gagging REALLY bad.
It's awful and really making me fed up!!!

I wish I could give you some advice on how to make it better but I just wanted you to know you're not alone!!!
I'm really hoping it passes soon because it's awful xx

Hbs21 · 23/08/2019 07:45

This is me right now and I'm so glad I'm not alone. We moved house a few weeks ago so it doesn't help that our home doesn't smell like "home" yet if that makes sense. I'm only 6 weeks so I'm imagining that this might carry on for a bit! DH cleaned the house for me yesterday as I couldn't stomach going into different rooms. If I need anything to eat I have to really mentally prepare myself to go in the kitchen!! I don't know whether to laugh or cry!

Sorry I can't offer any advice. If i find anything that works for me I will be sure to post it here.

Hbs21 · 23/08/2019 11:16

On a whim I decided to put some vicks vapour rub around my nose and that has helped! Sounds mad and I probably look mad but I'm passed caring at this point lol

AppleBlossomTimeNow · 23/08/2019 11:18

I hated the smell of my head when I was pregnant. It will pass x

MissPollyHadADolly19 · 23/08/2019 17:15

I had this!!
The only thing that helped was olbas oil. Put a dab on the neckline of my top, cushion covers, pillow - basically everything possible!

Bol87 · 23/08/2019 19:23

Unfortunately very normal. Also a HG sufferer and I hate my house. The kitchen makes me want to cry. I can’t stand the smell of my fridge, rain, the shower, my deodorant, my child’s shampoo (thus her when she cuddles Confused ), anything cooking, my car .. it’s blooming awful. Life is genuinely really tough at the moment.

But it does pass! I had this last pregnancy & by 14/15/16 weeks, the bloodhound nose calmed right down! As did the extreme sickness.

october92 · 28/08/2019 13:15

It's nice to know that I'm not alone. It really is awful, isn't it.
I also get paranoid at times that my sickness has gone, or that I'm imagining I'm sick and then worry about the possibility of a miscarriage. First pregnancy, and I'm finding the first trimester lonely, miserable and depressing Sad

Absolutely normal. I used to take washing to the utility room through the front door and down the path to the back door so I didn't have to go into the kitchen; I did that for months.

Marty93 · 28/08/2019 13:57

OP, this was me in my first trimester.... and still a bit like it now occasionally!

couldn't stand the smell of:

Kitchen
Hallway
My poor OH
Anything that was being cooked
The Fridge
The Washing Machine

all of which I am now OK with, apart from very very occasionally if i have a wobbly day and i feel a bit green!

you are not alone - the first trimester (and part of the second for me) was very miserable due to the sickness/nausea. it did help after we announced the pregnancy as i could openly moan!

I found that sucking on mints really helped (and i usually HATE mints).

x

Thank you, @Marty93 Flowers
How far along are you now? I'm counting down the days to my 12-week scan and I feel like time has just stopped.

I couldn't stand the smell of the toilets at work, whatever they were cleaned with made me want to throw up. Considering how much you pee when you are pregnant it was a nightmare. I had to hold my breath and go as quickly as I could

Pinkblueberry · 28/08/2019 17:09

I had this too - and I could never pin point what it was. For a while I thought it was my dog, poor thing!

Gustavo1 · 28/08/2019 17:21

Totally normal. I’m on my 4th HG pregnancy and this time even the smell of my own children made me heave.
It’s a really awful and lonely time. I was sick so often that being in other people’s company was just embarrassing and unbearable.
It will pass!
FWIW, I found an Olbus oil stick really helped in the earlier days. I now also spray my cuffs with the one perfume I own that doesn’t make me heave and stick my nose on when anything offends me. 28 weeks and counting!! x

Gustavo1 · 28/08/2019 17:22

Also, still being sick at 28 weeks is unusual and is my ‘extreme HG’. I’m sure you’ll be feeling much better by 14 weeks x

ineedaholidaynow · 28/08/2019 17:28

I was the same as tiny, moved into a new house, not knowing I was in early stages of pregnancy. Couldn't think what the smell was, didn't remember it smelling when we viewed it. Thought something had died in the loft or the previous owners' dog had done something horrible on the carpets! DH couldn't smell anything.

I would throw up as soon as I opened the front door, it was awful. Luckily, it calmed down in the latter weeks, and I have never smelled the 'smell' again.

aintnutinchanged · 28/08/2019 17:29

When I was pregnant with my third I had to move back into my mums house as every time I went near my front door I started gagging no one else could smell anything

StarlingsInSummer · 28/08/2019 17:33

Oh god, my sense of smell was so keen when I was pregnant. I couldn’t stand the fridge especially. DH used to have to go in it for any food we needed to cook - I was fine cooking but even a tiny whiff from opening the fridge door would have me heaving!

Gillseybear · 28/08/2019 17:37

To be honest I am the same OP. My bathroom has had the weirdest smell over the last few days and the smell of paint just makes me want to throw up.

SuzieQ10 · 28/08/2019 17:47

Me too. I bought 6 of those smell neutraliser things last week, and 3 reed defusers from Next. My living room smells so stale. And my hallway smells like old books. I'm embarrassed to have anyone over (16weeks pregnant)
