I'm Irish but DH isnt. He is happy with an Irish name if it is close to being phonetic but this limits choices. Any suggestions please.

Like Rory or Fionn

How can people pronounce Cillian as William shock

Just seen this now. That was a bad autocorrect fail Blush. No one pronounces.it William. They pronounce Cillian as Sillian!

My family are Irish... along with the name Conan.

evilharpy · 21/08/2019 22:51

I love Tadhg. Ciarán is nice too. Actually there are loads of Irish boys names I love.

I prefer the sound of Ronan without the fada on the a (Rónán would be pronounced Ro-nawn).

IrishMamaMia · 21/08/2019 22:57

I like lots of the names mentioned. Found myself really loving the name Fergal recently.

I have many older Irish relatives:
Seàn
Seamus
So many Michaels
Dermot
Patrick
Brendan
Mostly there's about 29 Michaels and the others have that as their middle name!

Really puzzled that Senan not considered an Irish name! If its derived from Sean does that not still make it Irish?

I had a Google and it keeps appearing under Irish names!

Senan Origin and Meaning

The nameSenanConnected with the Latin word meaning 'senator,' this started as a nickname, used as a term of respect. St. Senan was a famed founder of monasteries, whose ruins can still be seen. Legend has it that before he could found it, he had to banish a great monster. Other versions are Sionan, Sinan, Synan and Sinon. Seanan is also a pet form of Sean

St Senan dates from about the 8th century; that’s 1300 years of Irish enough for me!

1990carey · 22/08/2019 09:23

I'm in a similar situation, except were having a girl I love the name niamh for her but were still trying to decide.
I have a brother called Sean and Finley, I love the name Finley.

badb · 22/08/2019 10:06

This thread is making me irritated at my husband all over again for vetoing Senan. I do love the name we settled on, and it suits him perfectly well, but Senan is such a great name. He REALLY did not want an Irish name, despite being Irish and actually having an Irish name himself (though perhaps that's exactly why). I did take pleasure at vetoing his first choice in return, for mostly valid reasons but also sort of petty revenge.

1990carey Tara, Fia and Cara are easy to pronounce and spell, might be worth considering for your DD.

1990carey · 22/08/2019 16:19

@Deadringer thanks for the suggestions, however I've already suggest them to my partner, hes a bit of a pain when it comes to choosing a name.
