Hey I'm a religious nail wearer they're normally this length and shape (grown out a touch atm) did anyone keep their acrylics with a newborn? Heard loads of opinions on this just wondering if anyone had kept their nails with no issues

@guest2013 ha! Thank you I hope this is me!! I've lived with them about 3 years non stop! I'm glad they worked for you they're second nature now 😘

Bebelicious · 02/08/2019 19:32

I definitely think you can keep them, but a lot shorter

IVEgottheDECAF · 02/08/2019 19:32

This op certainly sounds like one from a couple of weeks ago. She did a thread on nails and another on a unique baby name spelling.....

Lucccc · 02/08/2019 19:33

@IVEgottheDECAF Definitely not me lol! Although wish I saw her post and read through that instead 😂😂

feelingsicknow · 02/08/2019 19:45

I am a religious acrylic wearer too - has to have mine removed for my ELCS.

Went to the salon 4 days after birth to have them put back on! (Was still on an adrenaline high and milk hadn't come in - day 5 was a shocker!)

I keep mine short and squoval but have never had any problems with them or with baby. TBH, it was one of the only things that made me feel like my old self (make up and other self-care have fallen away drastically).

Triskaidekaphilia · 02/08/2019 20:34

I couldn't function with nails like that (didn't stop me longing for them when I was a teen) but my natural nails have grown longer than they ever normally do, either from the pregnacare or just from pregnancy and having finished work. I'm wondering if they're an ok length for with a newborn, I don't want to scratch her and I imagine even at a few mm poo could get up them. How short did people trim them to?

I'd maybe switch to gel... I had acrylics and was babysitting nephew when he had a poo explosion which resulted in me having to rip my nails off because they were covered in shit.
Scarred me for life 😂

guest2013 · 02/08/2019 20:40

Avacadooo, could have, oh I don't know, washed your hands?!

LuckyLou7 · 02/08/2019 20:49

I'd go for short natural nails, newborn skin is very delicate, acrylics could cause damage if you scratched your baby by accident.

Creatureofthenight · 02/08/2019 20:49

OP if you’re planning on breastfeeding you will want at least one short nail on each side so you can unlatch when necessary.

It just makes it hard to spot your posts when they're not highlighted.

bellinisurge · 02/08/2019 20:57

If I saw you with a baby I'd assume they had poo underneath. Sorry.

orangesandlemmens · 02/08/2019 20:59

Get used to having natural nails.

As much as anything finding time to have your nails redone post baby will be difficult and I wouldn't want to take a baby into a nail bar with all the fumes & chemicals.

OhTheShoes · 02/08/2019 21:16

Def too long OP, I admire you for managing life with them! Are they all fake or have you managed to get your nails to grow that long? I think a more practical nail would be better sadly but you can still choose an eye catching colour Wink

To those making the nasty comments - bloody quit it. OP probably doesn't give a toss whether you like her nails. She is alone and pregnant and thinking about how life will change so bog off with your nasty comments!

avacadooo · 02/08/2019 21:26

@guest2013 I did obviously but it had actually gone between the nail and acrylic so 🤷‍♀️

Lucccc · 02/08/2019 21:50

@OhTheShoes 3 of them are tips the rest are just an acrylic over lay on my natural nail! (People on here seem to think I don't clean them either it's just basic hygiene)Hmm

And thank you! I didn't wanna start a row or have judgy people I just thought oh I can't be the only mum to be with long nails, thought it was a nice light hearted conversation to start lol! Xx

CheesePuffTheMagicDragon · 02/08/2019 21:55

@Triskaidekaphilia mine are a bit longer than yours and I have thick gel overlays on them, which makes them really blunt, so I actually feel safer with them than with natural nails! My son is 10 weeks now and I've never scratched him with them or got poo under them 🤷🏼‍♀️ maybe I'm just lucky! I have them a bit more square than yours but with rounded corners and I find them really practical 😊

ThursdayLastWeek · 02/08/2019 21:56

My first DC has a tiny scar on their chest from where I jabbed them with my fingernail during my knackered attempts to pick them up and move them when I was still in the hospital. I feel a little bit bad every time I see it.
My nails are barely ever over the tops of my fingers.

Herefortheduration · 02/08/2019 22:19

I've always had long natural nails, I've never scratched any of my children. When you've always had long nails you've already trained yourself to accommodate them, for example you adjust your grip to use the side of your fingers so much more. That said, poo nails are distinctly unpleasant, lol

BeingATwatItsABingThing · 03/08/2019 09:54

I will agree actually CheesePuff. My gels are quite blunt compared to my natural nails. As long as they’re a rounded shape, they’re not sharp at all.

Whisky, have a word! Some of us mothers even wear make up

What does that even mean? "Have a word" God it's like we are on towie or some shit here.
Make up isn't going to potentially scratch or harm a baby, is it? Is it? Ffs

Pandamodium · 03/08/2019 10:34

I kept mine on bit shorter and squarer then yours but I managed all the usual baby shite (literally in some cases) neonatel stay of 3month plus added oxygen (taping wire to his face for 6 month) never scratched him once.

SinkGirl · 03/08/2019 10:49

Those look like they are specifically designed to pierce through a shit-soaked baby wipe. Have fun with that!

I don’t have false nails - I quit biting mine years ago, and now they grow quite long (because I forget about them completely). It doesn’t get easier as they get bigger and squirmier - I’ve hacked mine off multiple times in a panic after accidentally scratching one of my boys. Just don’t do it OP. Get rid of them, it will make your life so much easier.

Triskaidekaphilia · 03/08/2019 11:00

Thanks @CheesePuffTheMagicDragon I was thinking of getting a gel polish to keep them intact because they'll probably go back to being really brittle once I'm no longer pregnant, so if it makes them more blunt as well then I won't have to worry as much
