Tiny baby clothes?

Does everyone buy tiny baby clothes? Or will they be fine in newborn to begin with?
I'm worried I'll buy loads of tiny baby clothes outfits, then baby will be too big for them! But is it worth having even just a couple of things?

For context, I'm only 5ft, DP about 5ft 5" he is extremely, extremely slim, as are all of his family. I'm not overweight in the slightest but I'm short and stumpy.
I've heard of tiny woman having giant babies, so I know our size is nothing to go by generally. But I'm hoping baby will be of regular weight and not end up having a 10lbs baby! I'm terrified of birth as it is, let alone if its bigger to push out Envy

Anyway. Should I invest in some tiny baby necessities, or just stick with newborn and upwards?

Get newborn, also some 0-3 months as you’ll definitely need those at some point. My average 7 and half pound DD was in newborn clothes for the first month. If your baby is teeny you can send your OH out for some premie clothes- Mothercare, Asda and John Lewis all sell them. But newborn will likely fit- most full term babies are between 6 and 9lbs. Baby wearing a slightly large babygrow for a couple of days is definitely preferable to spending money on tiny clothes that you likely won’t use!

My 3 week old was born at 5lb 3oz and I was induced at 37 weeks due to her size. I didn't buy any tiny baby clothes before and everything drowned her! I went straight to boots and they do lovely sleepsuits. She's now able to wear some first size clothes too. I wouldn't waste your money unless you know by scans that baby is likely to be small.

Mumof1andacat · 31/07/2019 05:16

Have some newborn and some 0-3. I'm 5ft and my baby was 7lbs 10oz. He was in newborn clothes for 6 weeks

Lauren83 · 31/07/2019 05:25

My son was straight into newborn, tiny baby wouldn't have fit him and he was an average weight, he is wearing a lot of 0-3 now as is growing out of the newborn, he was born just under 8lbs and is now 5 weeks and 10.5lbs. Had to move to size 2 nappies at 3 weeks too

owlofathena · 31/07/2019 09:39

My husband and I are pretty much the same height as you and your husband. I didn't buy any tiny baby clothes as I wasn't sure if they would be needed, turns out daughter was tiny when born and newborn clothes drowned her. My parents visited us in the hospital with a pack of tiny baby sleepsuits from tesco which my daughter wore until she was about a month old and then went into newborn. I would suggest buying newborn, like others have said if your baby does turn out to be tiny the clothes are readily available in most shops and supermarkets

Honestly just get newborn!! My eldest was born 7lb 10 and 53cm... he was only in newborn 2wks max before he went into 0-3months! Then mysecond son was 7lb 5 and 53cm... he qas in newborn about a month... the only baby i bought tiny baby for was my preemie... he was in them from being 2months old until about 5months old then went into newborn. So from being just under 4lb - about 7lb.

My lo was expected to be average sized .... But was 9lbs12 Shock I'm slim and no one in my family has ever had a baby over 8lbs so was a bit of a surprise.

she never even fit into new born clothes.

Just get a couple of new born bits and the rest 0-3 months. You can always order a few bits once they are here.

Switchsplash · 01/08/2019 07:24

I am a similar height to you, and my DH is a couple of inches taller than your DP. I weighed 3 Ib at almost term.

My smallest newborn weighed 9 Ib. I won't tell you how much the biggest one weighed.

If I remember correctly, I bought a few newborn sleep suits and a few 0-3 months for my first baby before birth.

TequilaMockingbird0 · 01/08/2019 07:59

I'd buy newborn and then get someone to get some tiny baby size if you need them. My DS came early and at 6lb needed the tiny baby size so we sent a relative to stock up. But more than likely if you're close to full term they'll be 7lb+ and it would just be a waste of money to get the tiny size!

devilishlygood · 01/08/2019 08:12

How pregnant are you? If you are really that bothered about whether to stock tiny or not, have one three-pack in your hospital suitcase and wait and see...you can get all sizes from 24hr supermarkets these days, baby probably won’t be offended! 😂

Your size now isn’t hugely relevant. Check in with parents and in-laws about your birth sizes to understand better the size of baby. For example, my best friend is 5’6” and had a 7lb first baby, she was about 7lbs too, her sister is 5’ now but was a 10lb birth weight.

Whatelsecouldibecalled · 01/08/2019 08:30

My niece arrived 2.5 weeks early little monkey and was born 5lb06oz. My sister is really petite and my BIL isn’t massive either. The new born stuff drowned my niece so we bought some tiny baby stuff from ASDA easy enough on the day. Quick wash and dry and then it was fine. She was in tiny baby stuff for about 2/3 weeks and then was big enough for newborn. We didn’t buy loads just enough to get her through.

Lexyness · 01/08/2019 09:08

I’m expecting dc4 any day! I’m 4”11 and dh is 6”! Dc1 sfga at 5lb12, dc2 6lb6 & dc3 sfga at 5lb13! Newborn clothes drowned them all! However I still would suggest only buying newborn and if needs be buy tiny baby when you have little one in your arms! Otherwise it is a waste of money if you don’t need tiny baby clothes!
Had many growth scans this time and they predict this one to be 6lb13 so my biggest baby yet and I was only 38weeks at tuesdays scan (won’t get much bigger Cos I’m being induced Saturday) I have been bought 2 tiny baby vests by my mum and have a few others I’ve acquired but nothing more in tiny baby size! I’m hoping this baby will fit the newborn clothes as we live in the middle of nowhere now and not easy to access anywhere for tiny baby size! BUT there is a Mothercare next door to the hospital so will send dh/mum there if needs be and bonus they have a sale on lol x

Bluebelltulip · 01/08/2019 09:15

I bought a few tiny baby things as my DM and MIL had relatively small babies. My DD was 6lb 8 Oz, overdue and newborn drowned her so had to buy more tiny baby. Oversized clothes won't harm them to start with until you get more. If you wanted to you could get a set of tiny baby things just in case.

kidsmakesomuchwashing · 01/08/2019 09:24

I never used any with mine went straight into 0-3 they were 9lb and 8lb7

PeacefulInTheDeep · 01/08/2019 09:25

I'd say don't bother with tiny baby clothes unless you've been told you're having a small baby. For most full term babies the newborn size will be absolutely fine, and there's variance in sizing between one shop and another anyway.

I was induced at 37 weeks due to DS measuring very small (below 10th centile) and in the rush to prepare (I only had 4 days notice) it didn't occur to me to buy anything in tiny baby size! At 5lb8oz the newborn stuff swamped him, but it didn't matter for a day or two until we could send our parents to pick up some smaller clothes on their way for visits.

If it's difficult to get hold of baby clothes where you are you could always pick up just one pack in a small size as keep the receipt to return/exchange later if not needed. In my experience, shops have been very accommodating with exchanging baby clothes even without receipts.

xsamix86 · 01/08/2019 13:49

I bought a mix of newborn, up to 1 month and some 0-3 months too. Whichever way she ends up I figured I was covered. Then I found out she was well below the 10th centile as I have to have scans every 4 weeks, and have been warned numerous times she may appear before or not long after 36 weeks. Once this had been mentioned 2-3 times I ordered a tiny baby bundle on ebay so I have them just in case she needs them. I paid below £10 so if she doesn't need them or only wears them a week I don't care.

PrincessScarlett · 01/08/2019 13:54

Tiny baby size is not meant for your average newborn baby. I think it's only for 6lb babies or less and today that is rare.

Unless you are specifically told your baby is measuring small I would just stick to newborn.

Teddybear45 · 01/08/2019 14:04

If you’re of Indian origin or have small babies in your family then yes having a few tiny baby things is useful as newborn is from 7-8 pounds. Don’t buy too much though. Although babies do lose a bit of weight after birth they do gain height too - and tiny baby clothes aren’t very useful for tall babies.

locketsprocket · 01/08/2019 14:12

All my 4 children were a week late and wore tiny baby for good 4iah weeks as newborn is massive my kids ranged from 5lbs 8oz smallest to 6lbs 8oz biggest they were all very compact petite little girls

Tigger001 · 01/08/2019 14:24

We didn't get any as we were told I was having a big baby, delivered him at 5lb 14 so sent out for tiny baby clothes.

Maybe pick one up just in case as our son needed a hospital sleep suit when he went in neonatal until my mum come back with a new suit. It was only a few hours but it really upset me (hormonal and probably very irrational 😳😳)

cookiechomper · 01/08/2019 16:57

Tiny baby is for babies around 5 to 6 pounds so I wouldn't buy tiny baby size unless for some reason you're expecting an early or small baby.
I have four kids and three of them only fit newborn size for a few weeks before going up to 0 to 3 months. My second child however was born unexpectedly at 37 weeks and was 6 pound but lost weight, so she was in the 5 pound something region. Even then she was only in tiny baby for a week before she started being too big.

BananasAreTheSourceOfEvil · 01/08/2019 23:57

My largest baby was 5lb3oz (11 years ago) and NB swamped her, so I sent ex out to get tiny baby stuff from Next (fortunately around the corner) but what was more useful in that time were the tiny baby nappies. If you're really worried then just buy a pack of sleepsuits and vests and a pack of tiny baby nappies that you can return if needs be.

Tiny baby stuff where I live was like hens teeth when she was born but I see it all the time now, so I wouldnt be panicking!

From my experience I would say 1 or 2 outfits/sets are worthwhile.
My lo came 2 weeks early and was a nice compact 5lbs10. We bought newborn as first size because I was so sure he wouldn't be early (I came 2 weeks late and dp has form for bad time management soin my pregnant mind I somehow decided that would correlate) they completely drowned him, they have now started to fit him at 3 weeks as with @qj17's lo.
I had been given some tiny baby stuff by a couple of friends so that has helped, next are really good for tiny vests and babygrows of you feel like getting a couple of sets.
