Good morning everyone!

Hoping one of you lovely people will be able to help me out! I'm really struggling to know what to take to work in a packed lunch as it seems that everything I would normally take is off the cards, like tinned soups and wraps with cold meats in them. I like to mix it up a bit and would appreciate a few ideas that will last me through until November!

Thanks!

I never used to take lunch to work, I worked in a town where I could pop out and get anything I fancied, I'm literally looking for inspiration, it's not so much the chicken thing (that was something I just wanted to check) I'm just not creative when it comes to lunches so was looking for advice on things I can make that have all the nutrients that baby needs.

I have a smoked salmon and cream cheese bagel or roasted vegetable cous cous. Sometimes tinned fish in a bake potato. Yum

FenellaMaxwell · 27/07/2019 10:19

I once heard that breathing oxygen was bad for your baby.

Now that you’ve read this, are you going to hold your breath until the baby arrives....? Grin

Seriously - you’ll make life so difficult for yourself if you go around avoiding every single thing that a crackpot American writes online. If you need reassurance, just check the NHS foods list, and maybe get yourself a copy of ‘Expecting Better’?

If you really want soup at lunch, then how about the fresh plastic pots from the supermarket? Or make your own?

Meats are fine. Cured meats need to be cooked so if you want a chicken and chorizo wrap that’s fine but you need to cook the chorizo thoroughly first.

It’s such a minefield - please don’t stress yourself out unnecessarily by believing everything you read.

codenameduchess · 27/07/2019 10:20

Ham and cold meat is fine, it's cured you should avoid. Tinned soup is fine- believe the nhs advice over spurious internet info.

There is very little you are advised to avoid in pregnancy really, I don't understand why there are so many trying scaremonger over nothing or why anyone pays any attention to it.

EscapeTheOrdinary · 27/07/2019 10:29

Take a look at the nhs website for what you can and can’t eat and plan lunches from there.

I tend to have sandwiches at the moment with lots of fruit and a snack bar with low sugar content as I’ve lost my appetite in the heat so simple choices work better for me at the moment! If I had more energy and enthusiasm to eat I would take in baked potatoes to reheat, salads, falafel with houmous and pittas, healthy ‘pot noodles’ which just contain rice noodles, finely grated vegetables, half a stock cube and some sort of seasoning that you just need to add hot water to. Couscous is always good especially giant cous cous in salads as well.

Teddybear45 · 27/07/2019 10:30

The NHS guidelines contains sensible advice about planning a pregnancy diet in the UK. If you’re not going to trust that and instead read random articles off the internet what’s the point?

Worrier2019 · 27/07/2019 10:38

If I ask for advice, I want advice, not passive aggressive comments. If you're not going to tell me LUNCH IDEAS, get off my thread.

I have now had several people confirm that I can in fact eat tinned soup and cold meats, that I you very much to those who have cleared that up for me. So far I've only had about 5 people on this thread give me lunch ideas which is what this post is about, not somewhere where other women can belittle other who have never been through pregnancy before and clearly by her name shows she's a worrier.

Tweetingmagpie · 27/07/2019 10:40

Just eat whatever you like , you will be fine! Most of that advice is outdated now anyway.

(Mother of 6 healthy children here who are runny eggs, cold meats and everything else during pregnancy )

Tweetingmagpie · 27/07/2019 10:42

Pasta salad? Frittata ( not sure how well that would keep though).

Soup made at home and taken in tastes better and is better for you than tinned if you’re into cooking.

Bwekfusth · 27/07/2019 10:44

Eat what you would normally eat. Seriously, nothing is going to happen. From a mum of 2 who ate many tinned things and a lot of banned in pregnancy McFlurrys.

Kungfupanda67 · 27/07/2019 10:45

But you have had advice Confused

The fact you’ve mentioned soups presumably means you like soup for lunch. You’ve been advised to eat soup. You also mentioned ham and chicken, again suggesting you like ham and chicken for lunch, you’ve been advised to eat ham and chicken.

Cous cous, salad, pasta, wraps, rolls, bagels, soups, frittata.

dementedpixie · 27/07/2019 10:48

McFlurry is not banned in pregnancy either

Worrier2019 · 27/07/2019 10:49

I know I've had advice and I am grateful for that. Basically, I'm shit at meal ideas that I can take with me to work and just wanted some ideas, taking away focus from soup because that's something I'll eat in winter, not now. The above comment was not for anyone who has been helpful, only for the few that are making sarcastic comments.

OP posts:
dementedpixie · 27/07/2019 10:49

Have soup and a wrap

dementedpixie · 27/07/2019 10:51

Eat whatever you feel like eating. Crackers, cheese, fruit, veg and dips,

KnobJockey · 27/07/2019 10:52

Well, OP, what kind of stuff do you like to eat? I'm pretty sure that everything you fancy is okay. Try some pasta or potato salad if you want something cold. Or if you're heading out to the shops, I think any sandwich you choose will be fine.

Im also pregnant, in early pregnancy I ate a lot of the Warburtons toastie pockets I'd put a little bit of cheese and sauce in them ready, then fill them with ham or leftovers from the night before, twice down in the toaster. They were delicious. My favourite was extra fish fingers from the night before, with a bit of cheese and ketchup. Might not have many nutrients, but bloody hell I enjoyed it.

Pregnancy is a long time, and believe me, I know its worrying, but you really need to figure out what information is worth listening to and filter out the rest, or you'll drive yourself crazy. And if you end up diagnosed with GD, but still want to believe these things and follow them, as well as a GD diet, you'll probably end up starving!

Worrier2019 · 27/07/2019 10:53

@dementedpixie I never know what I want though, my body just wants food, but nothing in particular, wraps are 100% an option for me, but looking for other ideas too to mix it up a bit.

OP posts:
Bwekfusth · 27/07/2019 10:54

@dementedpixie neither is tinned food or sandwich meats but here we are.

dementedpixie · 27/07/2019 10:55

Bagel, brioche burger roll with filling. Pasta salad, take picky bits of finger foods

LadyMinerva · 27/07/2019 10:57

My lunches are leftovers from dinner. I cook a little bit more than what's needed than bada bing bada boom...lunch!

NaughtToThreeSadOnions · 27/07/2019 10:58

Maybe start another thread specifically about meal ideas OP.

you've sort of contradicted yourself you see, or at very least confused the issue you spefically mention soup and cold meat. So people are advicing you that both are actally fine. Their not being passive agressive they are answering your question. You then say you wouldnt be eating hot meals in this heat any way, soooo soup??

While we're talking about passive aggression the most aggressive statement on this thread is "If you're not going to tell me LUNCH IDEAS, get off my thread"
In fact thats not passive thats just aggressive.

People have given you the advice follow the NHS site not some unqualified holistic unscientic artical from the states. Thats the advice. If ypu want lunch ideas start another thread

Worrier2019 · 27/07/2019 11:07

I did state in my original post that the meal ideas are to last me through until November, when it's not hot so I can eat soup if I want and I have thanked those who have advised me that both the original things I have mentioned are not banned in pregnancy.

And yes, I am getting a bit touchy because if you read the comment posted above that one where I'm being aggressive, it isn't a helpful comment in the slightest and someone who clearly had to have an input, so yeah, not ashamed to say it did sound aggressive.

I could start another thread, but what should I call it if my original title isn't clear enough? I'm asking for "pregnancy lunch ideas for work" - maybe I should just delete the original comments and carry on from where people are advising actual lunch ideas? I don't know, you tell me.

@LadyMinerva I'm lucky if there are any left overs in our house, but that's definitely one I'll keep in mind!

Worrier2019 · 27/07/2019 11:15

@gonewiththepotter I'm glad I'm not the only one! I know there is only a small risk even with the things that they say should be avoided, I'm just so anxious all the time, I had a small bleed the other day and I have my 20 week scan coming up, so I feel like I'm being more cautious than ever because I don't want to get to my scan and find out something is wrong because I will feel like it's my fault. My partner also works in healthcare so luckily he calms my anxiety on most situations but when it comes to food he knows no more than me Confused

FenellaMaxwell · 27/07/2019 11:20

People aren’t belittling you Confused They are trying to ease your worries about a needless subject. Maybe start a new thread without the inaccuracies if you don’t want people trying to reassure you about them.
