Hi, I'm currently 8w+2 and im craving huge amounts of milk Confused my nausea is pretty bad some days so im having glasses of whole milk in lieu of actual meals because its all i can face but im drinking about 3 pints a day in this heat on top of my huge water consumption 😂 is it ok to drink so much milk ? Worried about the fst and calories in it as its whole milk and I've read conflicting advice online ranging from its great for baby's development to it'll cause brain damage in your baby Confused

I've never heard anything about dairy being bad for your baby, in fact, I've heard you are supposed to have 4 serves of dairy every day.

aliensprig · 30/06/2019 08:40

It's not safe to have dairy in any amounts, unless you're a baby cow.

I don’t think it will cause harm however milk can be quite fatty so I would try to for fully skimmed milk or if it satisfies your cravings swap it for soya milk as it is suppose to be healthier

ChrisPrattsFace · 30/06/2019 10:45

I hope so coz I have some form of dairy with every meal, couldn’t not have it!
30 weeks now with a currently healthy baby in there!

CatSmize · 30/06/2019 10:52

I'm no expert but I was told by my midwife at 17w to make sure I drink plenty of (semi-skimmed) milk because of its iodine content which is important during pregnancy.

Despite my best intentions, my diet was terrible in the first trimester because I was so sick and had ridiculous sugar cravings so a lot of ice cream was consumed Blush I'm sure milk is much healthier than what a lot of us manage to keep down!

faelavie · 30/06/2019 10:54

Dairy products are safe and a great source of calcium, as long as they're pasteurised, you will be fine don't worry! Probably a good idea to drink skimmed milk though if you're drinking that much.

Your nausea may subside in a few weeks and you might crave milk less anyway :)

You're obviously not vegan so don't bother going on that scary dairy website another poster mentioned!

MollyHuaCha · 30/06/2019 10:55

3 pints a day sounds like overload to me. I tend to think along the lines of 'everything in moderation'.

Doyoumind · 30/06/2019 10:59

Where are you reading it will cause brain damage? That sounds like nonsense. It's probably better to make it semi-skimmed but more for your own health than the baby's.

Yep, best to stick your head in the sand like the rest of the general public and not care.

If you feel like being compassionate, Oatly oat milk (particularly the barista version) is a great alternative.

I drank quite a bit of milk while pregnant. I didn’t read that it was bad. Stick to the NHS website as you can find that anything is dangerous in pregnancy if you look hard enough on the internet

marshmallowkittycat · 30/06/2019 18:05

Do you think it might be worth eating plenty cheese, yoghurt and some leafy greens too? Maybe your body is craving the calcium in the milk. I'm sure your craving will pass in time, so I wouldn't worry.

Fivebyfive2 · 30/06/2019 18:09

@aliensprig, I understand your views but as the op isn't vegan at the moment, I'd say that pregnancy isn't exactly the best time to try what could potentially be a rather drastic diet/lifestyle change.

Op, dairy won't harm your baby as long as you follow the guidelines (ensure it's pasteurised, check dates etc) but if you do feel you're over doing it maybe try to cut back a little and try to find alternatives you can stomach. Good luck! Xx

Fivebyfive2 · 30/06/2019 18:11

Just to clarify, I don't mean vegan alternatives, unless you want to try them, I was thinking more like what @marshmallowkittycat suggested about yogurts etc instead of just pints of milk! Xx

AnneLovesGilbert · 30/06/2019 18:12

I don’t drink milk on its own but I ate buckets of yogurt when I was pregnant. I’m veggie and had mad protein cravings the whole way through, baby seems fine Grin

I’m back to normal levels now so glad I went with it as I obviously needed it at the time.

lljkk · 30/06/2019 18:18

I went lactose intolerant in pregnancy so it was kind of unsafe for me. Frankly I just ate whatever stayed down ok. Tuna was the best edible in one pregnancy. #anotherveganfailure

gamerchick · 30/06/2019 18:19

Early pregnancy it's a case of whatever you can keep down. It won't last forever and probably not after pregnancy. I'd rather drink milk which has good shit in it than just live on McDonald's.

Ignore the vegans and their guilt trips. This isn't a time to ignore your body. Pregnancy can be miserable enough.

whitehalleve · 30/06/2019 18:20

It's fine. Just stick to the nhs advice online for what to eat/not to eat.

faelavie · 30/06/2019 18:49

aliensprig oh just bore off! This is not the place to soapbox to non-vegans about how un-compassionate they are, not everyone shares your views and the OP obviously consumes dairy, take your guilt tripping elsewhere!

aliensprig · 30/06/2019 19:18

@faelavie I'm entitled to share my view, as are you. Just scroll past if you don't agree - no need to be rude.

smeerf · 30/06/2019 19:28

I used to hate dairy, drank almond milk etc. When I was pregnant, that's all I craved. My baby was born 100% healthy but full disclosure, he was 9lb15!

faelavie · 30/06/2019 20:05

@aliensprig But you aren't just "sharing your view", you are sharing incorrect information to a pregnant woman (i.e. "dairy is not safe in any amounts"), a statement not supported by any official health organisation including NHS guidance.

tinatsarina · 01/07/2019 00:05

@faelavie well said

@Lucafritz I think it's fine but as others have said try yogurts or semi skimmed if your worried about the cals in whole milk

FijateBien · 01/07/2019 00:10

aliensprig I 100% agree with you.

Tolleshunt · 01/07/2019 00:21

Why on earth would dairy be harmful in pregnancy? It’s a great source of nutrients, including iodine which is essential for brain development, and is lacking in the diet of most UK citizens. Even whole milk has a relatively low % of fat. If you can stomach it, then go for it.

Despite the current cultural obsession with orthorexia, dairy is a great, healthy food for anyone who doesn’t have a genuine allergy or intolerance.

Lucafritz · 01/07/2019 16:56

Absolutely not vegan 😂 my friend's are all farmers. The milk cravings have now been replaced with cheddar cheese cravings not sure if that's any better than the 3 pints a day habit but this baby sure loves its calcium and im not having much else besides it due to the nausea so i guess its the same calories id be getting from a normal 3 meals a day. NHS website said its perfectly safe and my friend pointed out I'll be craving all the calcium and high calories to grow the baby in these first stages so im just gonna go with it and see if it goes by itself Brew
