Did you wash brand new baby clothes? If so, with what type of detergent and/or fabric softener? What temp?

TIA

I didn’t. Didn’t see the point. I don’t wash my clothes before wearing them after I buy them.

sometimesalways · 18/06/2019 14:57

I did - sensitive detergent for babies. Just to make sure they are fresh!

I don't wash my new clothes before wearing but I do wash new underwear...

MiniMaxi · 18/06/2019 14:58

Yes I did, especially dark or bright colours (because dyes can be irritants)

Littleduckeggblue · 18/06/2019 14:59

I have, I just used normal washing up powder

onemouseplace · 18/06/2019 15:00

I didn't bother. I never got round to it with my DC1 who was premature and as not a single SCBU nurse tutted when we put brand new clothes on DC1 straight out of the pack, I reasoned that we really didn't need to bother.

oyoyoy · 18/06/2019 15:05

I didn't and don't intend to for any future babies as well. Any detergent is fine to use. The whole bio vs non-bio for babies is a myth.

Mermaid04 · 18/06/2019 15:07

I washed all clothes before he wore them if you look in shops sometimes they’ve been on the floor stood on etc. I used any washing detergent x

AgentCooper · 18/06/2019 15:08

I didn’t at first but when my DS developed eczema at about 4 months I started. And I do think it makes a difference in some cases. Some shops’ stuff I can put right on without washing but with some he definitely gets itchy if they’re not washed. And I use Surcare, no fabric softener.

boredpanda84 · 18/06/2019 15:13

I want sure why I was told to do this when I was pregnant but I did a bit of research and it's recommended because shops that manufacture overseas spray the clothes with formaldehyde to maintain the fabric whilst the clothes are shipped. I washed all my baby clothes because of this.

boredpanda84 · 18/06/2019 15:14

I washed everything at 40° and with a non bio... same as all my other clothes!

shookennotstirred · 18/06/2019 15:20

I did, I used a mixture of normal stuff we use or the many free sample packets of baby wash stuff. Turned out all
His clothes were far too big so he ended up wearing clothes stray out of the packet.
Mostly I'll wash it if it's new but I do that with my clothes too.

Sparkle733 · 18/06/2019 15:28

I’ve used fairy non bio to wash all baby clothes..
Sometimes a bit of lenor added too..

Jauralane · 18/06/2019 15:33

I washed nearly everything at 30 degrees with fairy non bio before putting it on DD. If I'd ordered stuff online and it came in plastic then I was more relaxed but anything that was on a shop floor I washed first. Maybe unnecessary and perhaps a bit over the top but that's what I felt most comfortable with.

Newyearsameoldshit · 18/06/2019 17:24

30 degree wash with Fairy or supermarket own equivalent. My skin isn't that sensitive overall, but I can get a bit rashy from brand new clothes if not washed so wasn't taking any chances with baby skin!

Heyha · 18/06/2019 17:41

I've washed everything we had for newborn and bedding stuff at 40 with our normal non-bio and softener (familiar smells too then!) because some said do, some said don't, but I was bored and it was only two loads so didn't see any reason not to. Did mean taking labels (and the tiny little square quality control stickers they have inside them, I'm sure they'd be very annoying to have in your clothes!) off but it wasn't masses of stuff.

beforeIhit30 · 18/06/2019 17:59

I washed first as DH a and I are both atopic (ie have a tendency to develop allergic diseases, we tend get eczema, hay fever, mild asthma). Calmer as an adult for me but still noticeable for DH and washing clothes at home before wearing is helpful, perhaps because he’s used to the detergent, so did the same for the DCs just in case (a few years on and yep, they’re atopic like us!). But, we just wash the same as our other clothes - which is bio powder detergent, for colour fabrics, on 40C.

The bio/non-bio thing is a bit of a weird one, many countries don’t even have non-bio, some people say they notice a difference but I switched from non-bio to bio some years back (as slightly better for washing and not gunking up in machine) and none of us have issues with it, despite DH and DC2 in particular having very sensitive skin. I’ve never used fabric conditioner as I’ve just not seen the point, our clothes and linens seem fine without it.

Sandybval · 18/06/2019 18:12

I wash them first as I do my own clothes, as they're often sprayed in the manufacturing process and it gets the smell off and they always feel softer. We have a baby wash setting on the washer, but it's just a normal wash with an extra rinse to make sure any excess detergent is removed; but I usually just do a normal wash with Comfort Pure and a non bio washing powder.

mrsk28 · 18/06/2019 18:31

I did wash all clothes just to be safe and used fairy non bio

nespressowoo · 18/06/2019 21:01

I did and still do. DS is 2 1/2. They are sprayed with chemicals to keep them crease-free.

nespressowoo · 18/06/2019 21:02

Also use fairy non-bio

NEtoN10 · 18/06/2019 21:03

I did, just my normal dairy powder and a gentle softener. Shops often drops clothes on the floor etc- and I wanted them to smell nice for him 😂 I love clean clothes smell

Lexyness · 18/06/2019 21:21

I don’t remember washing anything with my other 3 however had mw appointment today and she actually asked me if I’ve bought everything and got clothes etc washed and ready yet (I’m only 32 weeks but it was more of a hint that I had better get a move on!)
Anyway my mum has offered to do it all for me as she was at the appointment and she knows I’m struggling to keep on top of day to day washing with a husband and 3 other dc! I don’t have too many new items though, mainly second hand so I was going to make sure it was all refreshed! Hadn’t given it anymore thought than that yet though lol!
My mum can worry about temperature and detergent/softener now instead lol!

Katiem1234 · 18/06/2019 21:40

Yes, always wash new clothes! I imagine most of the time they'll need it more than secondhand (although I do always wash secondhand first too.) They get sprayed with chemicals during manufacturing. Possibly not the case if you've bought organic, but I'd wash just incase. I just wash on a quick wash if just new clothes, or add to a normal wash (usually a delicate 30!). Ecover here. x

Dec2019mumtobe · 18/06/2019 21:43

I will be washing everything, yes.

The chemicals used to treat new clothing are 😱😱 shocking

I will use whatever Aldi or Sainsbury's detergent is safe for babies. (I need to investigate) Both are leaping bunny certified, so don't contain ingredients tested on animals.
