Hi All,

I'm Jill I'm in the UK in Manchester, am I right in thinking a lot of ladies here are in America? Interesting to learn how antenatal care differs!

@stephn88 Christmas! You?

gingernutinswitzerland · 18/06/2019 09:30

From Cambridgeshire (well Essex originally, but let’s forget that! 🤣) but living in Switzerland. Antenatal care is definitely different here! (Has first baby in UK, pregnant with second atm)

stephn88 · 18/06/2019 10:38

@NapsAndTea 4 weeks time! Getting very real now 😂🙈😂

stephn88 · 18/06/2019 10:39

@gingernutinswitzerland would you say it is better? Do you get more scans or anything? Smile

One of the main differences is that you are usually followed by your gynaecologist (who you choose) rather than midwives. although there are midwives at the hospital during labour, as i understand it they contact your gynae to come in for the actual delivery. You then have a few midwife visits at home after the birth.

The number of scans seems to depend on the doc. My original gynae had her own private practice (and an ultrasound machine in her room) and scanned me at each of the 3 appointments I had (8, 12 and 16 weeks) and I went to the hospital for the 20-week scan. They even showed me a couple of 3D pics as well!

I had to change gynae’s unexpectedly. The new one is at medical centre so I’m not sure I’ll keep getting the same number of scans! But my care has been very good throughout pregnancy. I like the continuity of seeing the same person-last time I only saw the same midwife twice! But I did also have excellent care on the NHS so I can’t complain! They do an amazing job given how chronically understaffed and underfunded they are.

Health insurance is compulsory here and everything is fully covered including birth and hospital stay and pre- and post-natal appointments. Im very luck as my insurance through work will cover birth in a private hospital! The the Swiss hospitals generally are great and very well-equipped so wherever I end up will be good!

Sorry for the essay!
