I think i'm eating too much - safe to cut down?

Hiya peeps.

I'm a bit worried about my food consumption. I seem to be eating loads of crap just for the sake of it. It's not because I'm hungry most of the time, but because i know i can eat it, IYSWIM.

For instance, for breakfast i'll have 2 bits of toast (that's ok) but then i'll have crisps mid-morning or summat because i'm bored at work and because i know i wont get questioned or commented on from my work colleagues.

Then at lunchtime i'll go out and lately i've been buying TWO sarnies. Not because i'm hungry, but because i'm being greedy. Then after those i'll have a mousse and then something else crappy mid-afternoon. Then i'll have two bits of fruit on the train on the way home (still not coz of hunger but "just because i can").

So i'm thinking that i need to nip this destructive eating pattern in the bud before it gets too bad. Do you think it'd be perfectly safe for me to, for instance, instead of having 2 sarnies at lunchtime, to have a few ryvitas with philly & cucumber on top and then some cottage cheese later if i'm actually hungry, with some fruit later in the day on the train? Of course i can vary my lunches with a salad or pasta etc when i get bored of ryvitas (i actually FANCY them atm). Then in the evening have a balanced portionated dinner (both my DP and I pile our plates up waaaay too much and then wonder why we feel sick from being stuffed too much!!).

I'm a "curvacious" lady anyway, so it's not like i dont have the resources for baby to feed on!

This will be ok, right?

It didnt sound like you were eating too much to me (except perhaps the extra sarnie). Maybe you should eat a more substantial breakfast, to stop your energy dipping later on in the day? Crumpets / toast arent really a great breakfast - cereal, porridge or eggs are much better. Good luck!

RGPargy · 24/07/2007 17:04

Hi LoveAngel

Cereal is not really any better than toast IME and i hate porridge!! Eggs would be nice but is difficult to have when you're in the office, plus i dont always fancy an egg unless it's fried with a runny yolk and whacked into two slices of bread!! Now THAT i could handle!

Seriously tho, i am thinking about having weetabix & banana for breakie tomoz.

I was way rubbish today, not eaten very much but mostly junk apart from a couple of bits of tangerine! I'm ashamed to say dinner won't be much better as I don't fancy anything but tomorrow I'm going to be much better as it's my day off & I'll prepare better.
Well done RGP

MadamePlatypus · 24/07/2007 18:20

Eat healthy food when you are hungry and stop when you are full.

RGPargy · 24/07/2007 19:23

Thanx Jbck although i have to confess to having 6 bourbon biscuits with a small hot choc from the vending machine today. That is my only "sin" tho, so not tooooo bad.

MadamePlatypus - such an obvious statement and oh so very true!!!

RGP - LOL at your confession. Funny you say you cant stand porridge, for the last 2 weeks have been eating bowls of watery/ lumpy porridge and I am love love loving it! This baby is mighty odd methinks.

RGPargy · 24/07/2007 20:59

EEEWWWWWWW!!!!!!!!!

Jbck · 24/07/2007 22:10

Lumpy, watery porridge eeeeuuuuck! Altho' tbh bourbons eeeeuuuuuck too. At least it was only a small hot choc, I'm planning on one about 2am when I get up for my first insomniac stroll round the house of the evening.

dal21 · 25/07/2007 07:05

i know, not good is it....i love the fact that it is healthy but my DH looks at me in wonderment when I am tucking in with such gusto to a bowl of something that doesnt look the most appetising of dishes!

Imawurzel · 25/07/2007 07:17

hello there.
I am 17+2 and my weight is going up and down. It's odd.
Not sure on actual weight bit but i was 12 st just before pg then i went up a bit (i keep thinking like 12o'clock, i go to 5 past then 5 to)
It's very odd.
For breakfast i'll wait til i get to work as i walk, and if i have it at 7.30am i'm way hungry by 10. So sometimes have weetabix,or frosties or somesuch.
Them lunch between 12 and 2,(its never the same time) i have 1 sandwich, cheese & ham, or cornbeef,or egg mayo, etc, a packet of small crisps, sometimes an apple, sometimes a kitkat
Then nothing til tea at 7, chips ham & egg. steak, mushrooms, chips (oven chips) sausage & mash & beans.
I know i need to eat more fruit but we dont have any at work at the moment cos we're having a re-fit and i forget to take a diversion into town on way to work.
Sorry for long post and crashing into your thread.

PregnantGrrrl · 25/07/2007 07:25

i've been eating much more poorly this time round- usually through greed or boredom. i've got 2 1/2 mths left, so i'm vowing to cut back on tea and coffee, eat more veg and walk the poor dog twice a week. plucking up the nerve to go swimming once a week too...

RGPargy · 25/07/2007 10:28

Morning all you foodies out there!!

Well, last night i ended up having steak and pasta with a dollop of pasta sauce and a generous helping of grated cheese. Guess what?? I over did it on the portion sizes too... I cooked two little steak bits but could only eat one (eyes bigger than) and also when i put the pasta in the pan i thought there was no way it was enough for three so me and my DP shared the pasta and i cooked my DS some oven chips. Guess what?? There was PLENTY for three of us and i ended up eating far too much pasta and getting a bellyache from it. Serves me bloody right!!

My DP and I are now going to dish it up on a plate before we cook it so that we can see how much we are going to need, rather than just guessing and (as usual) overdoing the portion sizes.

Just had a lovely breakie of 2 slices of toast with crunchy peanut butter! Mmmmmm........

BrummieOnTheRun · 25/07/2007 10:53

tell you what stopped my carb binges...prospect of a big baby to deliver at the end of it! (midwife also helpfully added: "2nd baby, and it's a boy...firmer bones...don't squash as well in the birth canal).

actually I felt FAB once I'd ditched processed carbs, particularly wheat-based. energy levels up, stopped taking iron supplements, sproinged around right up to the end....

I found carbs made me crave more carbs. And there's bugger all nutrition in pasta so it was empty calories.

RGPargy · 25/07/2007 11:43

Hi Brummie. I know exactly what you're talking about as i was an avid low-carber before i became pg. Now i can barely look at the food i used to eat, let alone actually EAT it!!

When i first got pg the thought of ANYTHING low carb just really made me gag. Not so bad now, but it's actually taking the step and eating the low carb stuff. I know the chances of me being sick are very very low, but it's just getting my head around it again, y'know??

OP posts:
BrummieOnTheRun · 25/07/2007 12:24

I know exactly what you mean! all I wanted to eat was cheese on toast, pizza and either pasta or jacket potatoes....with cheese. horrendous. it did get easier later on though. on an aside, I realised the bread and pasta in particular were contributing to nausea...guaranteed 1 hour after eating it. must have been blood sugar dip or something.

ah, just relax and go with it. maybe just a little here and there? oatcakes instead of bread....sweet potato or boiled potatoes instead of jacket potatoes, 70% chocolate instead of desserts I still haven't mastered stopping after the 4th chunk though

also, (as you'll know as a fellow lo-carb afficianado!) you can do lovely cheesy bakes without flour by using double cream and cheese. Lovely with courgette or spinach. ummm, hungry now....

PregnantGrrrl · 25/07/2007 13:33

doing ok today...

wholemeal toast and marmite for breakfast
2 plums
6 reduced fat chocolate digestives (not good i know)
Just walked home for cottage cheese, ham and salad for lunch.

Walking back to work in a bit, then roast beef, mash and carrots for tea later.

Only 2 coffees today too

RGPargy · 25/07/2007 14:31

Brummie, i know some amazing recipes and a great website for LC support too. I've used one or two of the recipes so much that i cant bear to look at them lol! I'm not going to overly worry about LCing at the moment tbh. Once i've had the baby it might be a different story, but for now i dont think i'm doing too bad. Before i was pg, if i would cheat with high carb stuff, i would put on tons of water weight but since being pg i've put on a lot less, considering what i've actually been eating (carb wise).

PregnantGrrrl - sounds fine to me so far!!

Why are we (women) all so neurotic about food? (Me included and not said to put anyone down). I wish I could just enjoy my food knowing that I'm pregnant and I am going to put on weight.

I started this pregnancy (my 3rd) a size 12 but I'm a definite 14 and not panicking but definitely aware. I eat all the time not big portions but I graze. I biscuit at 10am and another at 10:45 and half an apple at some point and so on and so on. This is my last pregnancy and I have tried to vow to myself to enjoy it extra weight and all. My last two pregnancies I was careful with regards to what I ate and still ended up 1 1/2 stones over weight. I lost most of it bar three pounds. So RGPargy don't beat yourself up please just enjoy being pregnant and if you were on a low carb diet b4 getting pregnant you might be psychologically craving carbs that's what happened to me. You can now have carbs so you go mad.

Good luck

BrummieOnTheRun · 25/07/2007 20:24

oooo, if you get a mo' would be interested in that website URL. did well shifting baby weight, but am now picking during the day and have a jelly belly appearing! yuk!

Am trying to low-GI at the moment because I think it's healthier. Bought Rose Elliot's low GI recipe book, and that horrendous Gillian McKeith's book. Unfortunately has a picture of her on the front so just puts me in a bad mood!

Martha200 · 25/07/2007 21:49

I am determined not to get carried away with putting weight on.. all too tempting when I think of baguettes sooo... am trying to follow the slimming world plan which is simply about sensible eating. It has the backing of the Royal college of Midwifery for being fine and safe to follow when pregnant. There is no cutting back of food if following the plan.
Must try and not think of baguettes too much though.. mmm

RGPargy · 25/07/2007 22:15

No worries Brummie, i'll stick the link up tomorrow (it's on my "Favourites" on my web browser at work).

Zola - am trying my best to enjoy what i want but not go overboard. I do love my carbs tho.....

rgpargy - thanks, sometimes think I need the good luck and will power

dal21 · 26/07/2007 08:18

My diet is predominantly carbs at the mo! Baby makes my tummy very very upset if I venture too far off that path - upset tummy the works. Couldnt imagine doing pregnancy on low carb! IMO - healthy eating doesnt mean low carbs, I really dislike how carbs get bad press, 60-70% of your calories should come from carbs. If you are eating carbs - just try and make sure they are the good ones as an earlier poster indicated.

RGPargy · 26/07/2007 09:36

Oh dont worry dal, at the moment all i'm eating is carbs too!

Trouble with the press is that they go to the extreme. It's now NO carb, but LOW carb and there are plenty of very healthy food alternatives to high carbs that still give you certain levels of carbs, just not quite so much.

Brummie - i forgot that i'm not in work today so i'll post you the recipe link tomorrow as i'm back in the office then, ok?
