Ask at in a pharmacy. But are you sure you want to do this? It's nasty.

MrsBadger · 22/07/2007 15:55

and it won't bring on labour.

hayley2u · 22/07/2007 15:59

oh yer i really do. had to b induced with son so wanna give it a wirl. i know it sounds desperate but i am. worth a try.

MrsBadger · 22/07/2007 16:03

have you tried pineapple already?
sex?
nipple stim (use a breast pump)?

awful stomach cramps and terrible diarrhoea and then having to be induced anyway sounds pretty bad. How far overdue are you?

hayley2u · 22/07/2007 16:06

yer tried it. also tried pneapple every day over with my last baby and that did not help either. would just like to give it a shot.im 40 1/2 weeks

PrettyCandles · 22/07/2007 16:08

I'm sure I read somewhere that the best way to do nipple stim is with a breastpump, but you need to keep going for at least an hour, and do it as often as you can. But it is apparently effective that way - more so than any of the other old wives' tales.

MrsBadger · 22/07/2007 16:18

when are they threatening to induce you? You should be safe till 42...

VeronicaMars · 22/07/2007 16:26

Don't do it without reading up on it first. It is safe for a lot of women but there can be complications as well. Cramps and starting your labour on the toilet? Dehydration and some doctors say it can cause the baby to have his/her first bowel movement in the womb, don't think I would want to risk it at all.

lulumama · 22/07/2007 16:34

the way castor oil can work is to give you the runs...the cramps irritate the uterus, which can start labour IF you are ready

and you can end up dehydrated and labouring on the toilet..or just feeling ill and exhausted which is not good to get labour started

if you are not even 41 weeks, i would seriously reconsider, if you went later with your first, you possibly need to carry your babies for longer than 40 or 41 weeks

sex, nipple stim, visualisation can help, ask for a sweep at 41 if you are determined to try something

but please do not buy castor oil

chemists often refuse to sell it to heavily pregnant women with good reason

kidsmom2 · 23/07/2007 03:34

I bought mine from Walmart in the laxative section ($3.00). I tried some with Sprite but oh my god... I thought I was going to die! I felt like I was giving birth from my butt! I have a 5 yr old & honestly after 4 hours of drinking that stuff I felt like I was in final stages of labor & wasn't going to make it to the hospital. It didn't work though! I was sent home - boy was I pissed!

thomcat · 23/07/2007 19:57

Did you go for it? Did it work for you?

I was 10 days late with DD1 and took castor oil. Took it at about 7.30 pm and she was in my arms less than 21 hours later!

Same with no 2 but I wasn't late with her, just wanted her out before Xmas Day so got on it early and bingo!

gogetter · 23/07/2007 20:04

Have a marathon orgasm session - sounds much more fun than drinking oil!! Get your DH on the job - one every hour!!

hayley2u · 23/07/2007 22:56

my boyfriend is working away though and i rally dont wanna have to go n my own so wanna get it out .

thom cat how man weeks was you when you did it with your daughter. is it really all that bad

OP posts:
thomcat · 24/07/2007 21:14

Sorry for late reply. DD1 was due 10 Dec and I took oil on 17th and she was born a few hours later. DD2 was due 22 Dec and I took it on the 19th and she was also born a few hours later.
I didn't think it was that bad. Mixed the bottle with fresh orange juice and downed it in one. Had to go to the loo yeah but better than being induced imo.

WestCountryLass · 24/07/2007 21:25

I drank 10 cups of raspberry leaf tea over about 8 hours, ate a load of pineapple, had a curry and went for a long walk and had DS that evening Had been having contractions all week tho

hayley2u · 24/07/2007 21:58

think i will so try in thomcat although got bit to go first.

castor oil is bad news and many pharmacies wont sell it to preg ladies!
(havent read all posts so sorry if repeating)

thomcat · 25/07/2007 19:04

I had done everything known to man to bring on labour and nothing worked. I was desperate not to be induced and would do castor oil a third time if it came to it with this pregnancy, absolutley no question. I'd take castor oil and the squits before hand over induction. II was desperate to have a pain relief free active positive bith and from the stories and woman I have spoken to that is rarely possible when you are induced. I wanted to be in control and not have anyone bring ing on my labour except me and a bottle of castor oil.

Either way, whatever you decide hayley2u, I hope you have a good positive birth an I look forward to reading the announcement soon!

agnesnitt · 25/07/2007 20:09

Sorry to sound odd, but on another thread of yours you say you are only 32/35 weeks depending on whether you go by your dates or the midwife given ones. On this thread you say you are at least three days past term.

In any situation castor oil is a bit of a tricky issue, but if you're up to seven weeks from term I think you ought to keep away from the pharmacy for now.

hayley2u · 25/07/2007 20:12

so i did god thinkgoing mad no 7 weeks to go sorry

OP posts:
lulumama · 25/07/2007 20:16

your dates are 7 weeks different....that is a big discrepancy..and if your baby is 33 rather than 40 weeks gestation, then please don;t try anything to induce labour

also, have seen you have had bleeding and are also wanting a c.s , so no need to try the castor oil

hayley2u · 25/07/2007 20:20

i know but iv been panicking that all. i heard that castor oil origanly was supposed to be less painful and thought it sounded much better as heard from few people. but i posted this a bit a go and since had heavy bleeding and was in hospital all afternoon yesterday. so majorly think will give castor oil a miss now.i aint got clue what want or do just all so scary since last baby, proper nightmares.stories on her scared me about the oil trick though

My midwife told me it does work if you're ready to go - but not a good idea for the reasons mentioned already. However, my mum took it, as did most of her friends (well, it was the late 60's) and it certainly brought on her labour, with no complications at all. Can it be any worse than being induced? I'd give it a go.
